Dolphins coach Joe Philbin thinks he has about three months to pick a quarterback, and he plans to get a close look at all of the quarterbacks on his roster before he does.

This articles says Philbin said there is a quarterback competition. This will add a lot of drama into their show because Philbin will pick his starting quarterback by week 3 of the preseason, while the show ends just before the start of the regular season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Cam Newton was a bad teammate last season. Never mind the ridiculous numbers he put up and helped his teammates compile. Never mind the highlight plays. Never mind the Rookie of the Year award he earned.

He was a bad teammate and that needs to change. Just ask him.

"I was very immature," Newton said when asked about his sometimes moody reaction as losses piled up. "I'll be the first one to tell you, the pouting and the moping, I kind of overdid it. I know that. I was a bad teammate. I shut off to some people who gave unbelievable effort. … That's where I have to mature."

"Cam was angry because he thought he could and should make every play," said wide receiver Steve Smith, who somehow may have met his match in the intensity department. Like Smith, Newton is unusually high-strung in a business filled with driven people.

"He has to realize you can't do it all yourself. It's like when someone drops a touchdown pass at the end of a close game. You can say that play cost the team a chance to win the game, but it didn't cause the team to lose. As you get older in this game, you see how everybody has to do their job and how there are so many plays in a game that affect the outcome. As a competitor, you want the ball in your hands at the end to make the play, but you can't do it all in football. You have to give other people a chance to make a play for you, to help you out."

Yeah it sure does seem as if Newton is showing that he's got a good head on his shoulders. I remember before the draft the "experts" were bemoaning the fact that it seemed like he was advertising himself and trying to make a "star" out of himself before his career even began and I suppose there was a bit of that but perhaps his first year in the NFL has humbled him somewhat despite all the accolades he's gotten.

That's a great thing to see IMO.

The best name on a list like that for me would be Danny Woodhead. Just couldn't help but get behind that guy while watching the show. He doesn't make the cut but then resurfaces and makes major contributions for the Pats. Biggest Hard Knocks success story for me.

Honestly, he said all the right things before the draft too. People (including myself) just didn't take his comments at face value and needed his actions to back them up. Completely separate from all the success he had on the field, I think he's done a great job of it and has continued to say all the right things. In addition to this, I also heard he's dead set on not having a sophomore slump and that's been his motivation all off season. I hope he continues to grow and shine also. He really does have the charm and charisma of RG3 and just needed to get the early incidents in his college career behind him, which he seems to be doing.

It's not every day that the Washington Redskins call up a man convicted of rape and ask him if he'd agree to a one-day workout, but it happened Tuesday.

Oh, and the Kansas City Chiefs called Tuesday, too. And the Miami Dolphins. And they were three days behind the Seattle Seahawks, who will work him out on June 7.

Why are all these NFL teams eager to check out a convicted sex offender, a man who served five years in prison and wore a GPS ankle bracelet for another five?

Because Brian Banks didn't do it.

A judge in Long Beach, Calif., threw out his kidnapping and rape conviction last week after looking at a videotape of his accuser admitting she lied. After 10 years, he was suddenly a free and innocent man.

Happy to see an NFL team giving that kid a chance. Hopefully this is not just some PR move and he receives a real shot. Rooting for him to make it.

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh insists the 49ers planned to have Alex Smith as their quarterback even while they examined the possibility of signing then-free agent Peyton Manning.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh insists the 49ers planned to have Alex Smith as their quarterback even while they examined the possibility of signing then-free agent Peyton Manning.

Harbaugh ended his weekly meeting with reporters on Wednesday by addressing what he says is the "erroneous perception that we were flirting with Peyton Manning."

Harbaugh called the reports silly and phony, then spoke at length about his and the team's ongoing support for Smith, who last season helped the 49ers reach the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

"I've said it all along, Alex Smith has been our quarterback," Harbaugh said. "There's no scenario other than Alex choosing to sign with another team that we would have considered him not as our quarterback. It's time to set the record straight.

"Alex Smith is our quarterback, was our quarterback and (we) had every intention of always bringing him back."

"Were we out there seeing, evaluating if we could have them both? Heck yeah," Harbaugh said. "You evaluate that, you eliminate the possibility. We would not have given any player out there in free agency a sixth of our salary cap and let six or seven of our own guys go. Hopefully, that sets the record straight. You don't have to keep reporting the silliness or phoniness.

"There was interest (in Manning) and we evaluated it, pursued it, further evaluated it and there was conversations. But there was nothing said to Alex that was not said to Peyton Manning or in house here, on the record or off the record. Both those young men knew exactly what our intentions were."
Harbaugh must have slept face down in a pile of nose clams

Vikings cornerback Asher Allen surprised his team -- and the rest of the league -- by retiring from football at the age of 24, after only three NFL seasons.
