I don't even like seeing Backus on the field in the first place, let alone like that.

The refs are fine. We all complain about the 'real' refs too. The locked out refs will feel a ton of pressure with no paychecks coming in, it is only a matter of time. By week 4-5, I'd guess they will be back.

Reportedly NFL plans to use them now through at least week 5.

          Re: NFL Off Topic 2012

My take on the refs. The only crew that had a complete stinker that I saw was the SF/GB game. But one regular crew per week seems to have their collective heads up their butts, so there wasn't anything new there. The extra timeout in the SEA/ARI game was also inexcusable.

In general, these are the things that I've noticed with the replacements.

          - They are bad a spotting the ball. I thought the regular guys made some errors, but they have it down to a science compared to the replacements. These guys are missing by a full yard at times.

          - Procedural things take longer including spotting the ball, getting play ready, making sure the chains are moving on a first down, etc.

          - It takes them forever to call a penalty. Things like determining what down it is/will be, figuring out who it was on, and determining whether it will be accepted/declined take longer.

          - It's clear that they've been told, "If the play is close to a TD, call a TD and we'll look at it for you." I actually wish the regular guys would do this a bit more often, but some of the calls by the replacements aren't even close, but if they aren't sure, they just look at each other and call a TD.

All in all, I can live with those things. It certainly wasn't the doomsday situation some were predicting. People forget that it wasn't really all that long ago that we had replacement refs in a regular season. Why do people forget that? Because in the end it didn't matter.

I will say one thing for these refs that I think is refreshing and actually good, while they may call certain infractions a bit tight they at least skew closer to the interpretation of the rules in the rule book and don't make calls based on superstar status. That's probably one major reason a lot of players are pissing and moaning about it but tough cookies to them! I actually like that these guys are calling it the way it's written.

Yes these guys make mistakes that the normal refs probably wouldn't make but by and large I think they're doing the best they can and the more time they work the more consistent they'll get. I just hope that calling the game the "right" way is something that continues and doesn't get watered down.

I suppose miscellaneous statgeekery has a place in this thread?

              1. http://www.advancednflstats.com/2012...s-and-why.html. You often hear from [reluctant] commentators that the NFL is a passing league. Perhaps a better expression would be, "The NFL should be a passing league."

              2. Arizona plays at <del>New England at 10 AM this weekend</del> their death trap. Since moving to Arizona, the Cardinals are 26-76 in regular season games played in the Eastern Time Zone. If you just include cold games in the EST (which I loosely defined as games played @ New England, New York (x2), Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Philly, Cincinnati, and Cleveland), they're 10-37. And they're 9-29 in "cold games" played at 1 PM EST. Having Brady, Gronk, and Lloyd on my fantasy team compelled me to look up this information.

Arizona is a quiet 8-2 in it's last 10 games dating back to last season.

Didn't even know that until I found it on ProFootballTalk.

When I saw that on ESPN the other day I was hoping the defender he was talking to would actually turn around.

                      That would have been awesome.

Tyron Smith gets fined for the TD saving tackle he made. I've never known anyone to get fined for a horse collar tackle...? Did he get fined because in the end Dallas won or something?
