Former Detroit Lions All-Pro and actor Alex Karras has been given only a few days to live because of kidney failure.

“The entire Detroit Lions family is deeply saddened to learn of the news regarding the condition of one of our all-time greats, Alex Karras,” Lions President Tom Lewand said. “Perhaps no player in Lions history attained as much success and notoriety for what he did after his playing days as did Alex.

The 77-year-old Karras has been suffering from dementia. He is among the many former NFL players suing the league regarding the treatment of head injuries. Detroit drafted him 10th overall out of Iowa in 1958 and he was a standout for 12 seasons.

He lived a very full life and it's tragic that he's suffering so much. I've heard he's also been battling Alzheimers as well. Loved him in Webster as a kid growing up.

That's disappointing to hear... Karras was a good player, good actor, and he's one reason I'm proud to be a Hawkeye fan...

Shea McClellin couldn’t believe his eyes: Chicago Bears veterans had run up a restaurant tab for more than $38,000 -- or so the receipt read.

“I didn’t see how, like, 10 guys could spend that much money on one bill,” McClellin said about Tuesday’s Rookie Night for Bears veterans. “I was just like: ‘Oh, I’m going to have to pay someone back because I can’t pay all of that right now.'"

Turns out veteran defensive lineman Israel Idonije was simply having some fun at the rookies’ expense.

“We all went out to dinner for Rookie Night and we had the restaurant bring the big bill just to shock Aston (Whiteside on the practice squad) and Shea," said Idonije, who tweeted a picture of the bill. "It was hilarious. They didn’t know what to do with themselves. It was fun.”

Coach Lovie Smith said he didn’t know anything about Tuesday night’s player shenanigans, but he can appreciate the value of camaraderie among players on and off the field.

“I know we’re a close-knit locker room, for sure. Close-knit group,” Smith said. “Being a rookie ... there’s a reason why you are a rookie. You have to work your way from the bottom to the top. I am sure it is all in good fun.”

Veteran defensive end Julius Peppers said he wishes he could have seen the expressions on the faces of McClellin and Whiteside.

“I was there (at the restaurant), but I wasn’t there when the check got presented,” Peppers said.

"I'm not into records, fellas. I'm just into winning football games," Terry Bradshaw, who won four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers, told WFAN radio in New York. "The Saints hadn't won a game this season. I'm not into records, I'm into winning Super Bowls. We lose sight of why we play. We play to win and to win championships, not to break records."
"I was a little upset that he went to the NFL to get Payton back to watch him break a record," Bradshaw said. "I'm like, 'Are you kidding me?' I never would have gone and asked. I thought it was disrespectful to the San Diego Chargers.

"So break it, go ahead.... You're throwing it 50 times a game."

Have no fear people, the thuggish Jets player who blatantly went after Brian Cushing's knee was fined $10,000 and everything's fine now and Brian Cushing is most definitely not out for the year anymore.

I would see his point if that was a single game/season record but it was over the course of 3 seasons, during which the Saints appeared in the playoffs 3 times and won a superbowl.

RE: Bradshaw/Brees: I don't know if I agree with it being disrespectful to the Chargers, but it was pretty ridiculous for Brees to ask the NFL to allow Payton and co. to come see the game, and for the NFL to allow it. Brees has come off as selfish and childish alot over the past few months, a stark contrast from the guy he seemed to be before the Bountygate thing broke out.

Not understanding how it was selfish? He's pretty much acknowledging that Payton, Loomis, Vitt were instrumental in him achieving the record, and he wanted them on hand with the possibility of surpassing it.

Especially after Greg Williams received permission from the League, to attend Rams games the week prior. If the NFL is going to allow Greg Williams to attend 2 games, it would only be fair to allow Payton and those guys to go to one.
