Get a DWI, you'll get probation your first time, locked up if you're a repeat offender.

Kill someone while driving drunk (worse case scenario and why there are laws against it) and you go to jail the first time.

I'm really sorry if it's not clear to you. You're missing out.

Im not sure what any of this has to do with what I said. Maybe I am missing out?

What Mays did was illegal and a fine which is the precedent is how it should be handled. But suspended? Suspensions usually come down on guys who have done this multiple times showing a clear disregard for not only the rules but for the penalty to violating those rules. Maybe that is the case for Mays, as I admitted I dont know his history with this kind of thing.

I think after Bountygate and the new focus on player safety now more than ever that kind of unnecessary and blatant hit, especially on a QB, will be more scrutinized and more likely to result in suspension, even if its someone without prior history.

According to ProFootballTalk, he was just fined recently for hitting Matt Ryan last week in their game with the Falcons.

I will give you that Mays made no attempt to go low on Schaub, but when did it become illegal to shoulder a guy to the ground (albeit poor technique)???

The "FAR" greater problem is that the NFL has become watered-down. I find it hard to believe that anyone here who has viewed NFL games pre-Goodell and even pre-Tagliabue can refute that.

To an extent I feel that the players get paid tons of money to play a game. A game that they have the choice of playing or not playing whenever they want. So I don't feel to bad when they go out there and knock the crap out of each other. In regards to this specific play and Goodell's mantra of player safety I can see how that hit would constitute a one game suspension. Judging by that video I would say Mays made a conscious bad decision, more so than bad technique.

NFL Films is too damn good at their documentaries. A Football Life is excellent.

I can't wait for ESPN's 30 for 30 to return and check out their football documentaries although they do great work in all of them as well.

Tons of money doesn't really help you when you're out of the league and going crazy with concussion symptoms.

Concussions are an inherent risk of the game. I understand that the NFL needs to crack down on intentional helmet-to-helmet hits to minimize the concussion risk. But the players are fully aware of the risks and are paid hansomely for it. Better than half of the players will tell you that they try to cover up their concussion symptoms so that they can continue to play, and the NFL has taken the next step to help protect the players from themselves. Agreed, money doesn't help later on in the player's life when they suffer brain damage. But, like boxers, they know the risks and it is a violent game which is also a reason why it is the most popular sport in the US.

I just see Goodell taking all of this too far.... to the point where players who play fast and hit hard will be sitting out many games because they unintentionally and accidently hit a guy with his helmet in the process of making a tackle. It is all about intent. I still do not believe that Joe Mays intended to "take Schaub's head off." Mays has no history of that behavior, and his hit on Ryan the previous week was minor. Mays isn't a problem child and should be playing this week...IMHO.

I think the key factor here was that his hit was on a QB, aka the darlings of the league. Not to be cynical but I believe that had his hit been on a receiver or RB then he still would've been fined but not suspended. JMHO.

The equivalent hit on a WR or DB would be hitting them in the helmet just before the ball gets to them, so no, I think he would have been suspended for that too.

Literally launching head first into someone's head with no effort to use your hands or play the ball, leaving your feet, etc isn't done all that much anymore thankfully.

There really is no spinning this hit as 'oops' or 'just because he's a QB', it's as about as bad as they get without outright taking your helmet off and hitting someone with it IMO.

Helmet to helmet hits are part of the game. Most of the players are similar heights. If a defender is rushing a QB and going to sack him, what do you think is going to happen? If they both stay standing, their helmets are going to touch. The defender can't go low and take all risk out as that is illegal. So the defender has to try to go to the chest. In order to hit the chest, the defender must lower his head and shoulders. Now this leads to the leading with the helmet penalty. If the QB ducks, then the defender looks like he led with his head and hits the QB in the head.

The same thing goes for the WRs. WRs also duck a lot more trying to avoid contact, so their head goes to where their chest was.

The defenders should stop launching, but that is really the only thing that should be changed. The rest of the rules are nonsense. If you want to make a real change, forbid the offensive players from ducking or lowering their head. Make them stand straight up the entire play.

None of these excuses applied to the Mays hit. QB was stationary, made it a very easy call for the refs and commish.
