The Jets were at the top of the league in Rushing Yards, Yards Allowed, and Points Allowed those two years. Sanchez did play well in the playoffs, but you'd have to be a really terrible QB to miss the playoffs with a running attack and defense that are among the best in the league.

Sanchez needs more than just a decent team around him to win. He has been in the league for 4 years now and it's obvious that he is not a QB you can build a team around. Maybe Geno Smith isn't that guy either, but in the 2nd round, after already selecting two guys on defense, I can't fault the Jets for that move.

I addressed it. Calvin Johnson wasn't coming out of that 2nd round.

When Sanchez went to the AFC championship games, he had one of the best O-Lines and defenses in the entire league. The Jets ran the ball and Sanchez just had to avoid mistakes.

The last 2 years he has been near the top of the league in turnovers. He can't even throw Out patterns.

Do I think he's serviceable? Yes.

But he is, and should be, replaceable.

You turn the ball over at the rate he has and you look to upgrade the position if you can.

A once in a generation player wasn't coming out of the second round? No way!

So what you guys are telling me is the Jets shouldn't have focused on the formula that helped them get to the AFCCG and coincidently let Sanchez shine? They shouldn't focus on building around him so they can get back to those championship games? Instead they should focus on throwing a rookie into this mess instead of a guy that has experience?

"Shine" is a strong word. Weren't they 9-7 both of those years?

Does it matter if they were in the AFCCG? And were a couple plays away from winning those games?

I don't see why they can't work on both the defense and the QB position. They already selected Milliner and Richardson before they took Smith, if they felt that Smith was an upgrade over Sanchez why not take him with their third pick?

Sanchez has a career completion percentage of 55% with 68 TDs and 69 INT. Even if they are able to rebuild that defense he just isn't good enough to take them all the way. They need a QB that can win them games and if they believe Smith could be that guy I think taking him in R2 was the right choice.

I can go w/ this and it makes sense. I would've just preferred to add to another position and see how the year goes. If Ryan gets fired, pieces are already set up and a rookie can come in getting starter reps from day ins from players who have more experience and experience playing together.

                  But good post nonetheless.

Is anyone talking as much about the Eagles and their 4 QBs?
Yeah but it's no secret why taking a QB plays into the whole 'LOLJets' storyline that's developed the past few years. First extending Sanchez after 2011 season, then trading for Tebow and not playing him, then taking Smith, all while Sanchez' still there?

I'm not a fan of the guy but it's impossible to think he's going to succeed given what's gone on now. If the Jets feel that way then fine, turn it over to Geno and let Sanchez go; they may still do that. But don't bs the guy and basically get people every year to replace him.

BTW as a fan of a team that's been a laughing stock for the better part of a decade and even when we are trying to turn it around still gets laughed at by most of the media, it's hard for me to feel bad about media 'piling onto' the Jets. By that I mean even though the Jets now are trying to rebuild and have a new GM in charge, of course people are going to hold their boastfulness, i.e Ryan's perennial SB predictions, trading for Tebow as if he was the missing piece, etc, against them.

Curvin Johnson was there for the taking! Can't believe he went undrafted and I don't think he's even been picked up as an UDFA, such a travesty.

                        Fair point.
Rex has always caused headlines so I shouldn't turn around and be mad when we're still making headlines over what I feel is an irrelevant QB "battle".

Since when has a second round pick made or broke a franchise? I know Geno was a projected top pick but thats NOT where he was taken. If he turns out to be complete trash, so what? Second round picks have busted out left and right. If he turns out to be number one overall worthy what will your argument be then? And about surrounding Sanchez with more weapons, the Jets have Santonio coming back and they have Stephen Hill (another second round pick) and they picked up Chris Ivory who they hope to can carry them into the future. What rookie in the second round would have revolutionized Sanchez's game?

Who should they have picked up at that spot since they clearly had a need at the QB spot and a supposed first round QB fell right into their laps. I know its easy to hate on everything that franchise does because they were so loud in the past but this move is hardly, HARDLY a big deal if it were to not work out.

The only criticism I have of the move is that I would rather them go safety to build their freaky young defense and bide time to ravage next years draft.

The Jets will stopped being talked about and boosted up like crazy when they no longer play in NY.

If they played in WV or VA or Carolina, then of course they wouldn't get this attention from fans or from Media/Networks(ESPN/NFL Network)that covers them. A mediocre team/franchise in NY is more easy for them to sell and get people to talk about than the Jaguars' struggles or the Chiefs' struggles.

                              I agree.

But this is beyond attention, its blatant hatred. All year and going into previous years it has been "Sanchez is trash, when will they release him, is he the worst player ever, how did he get to championship games, when they dump him the Jets will be relevant". After he butt fumbled it got ridiculous. Rex Ryan guaranteeing championships made them public enemy number one, but then they were winning and noone could say anything. Now they suck and they are easy targets.

Before the Sanchez/Rex era the Jets were lame and they werent anywhere near this level of hate and vitrol magnets.

Now the Jets draft a QB and the rhetoric becomes "what were they thinking! Drafting a qb to replace Sanchez OMG what a dumb move! Dont they realize they have 6 QBs now what are they thinking!"

Its hilariously ridiculous. Until Rex and Sanchez go and they start winning again, it will always be easy to pick on the Jets. All I know is Idzik is working something good in Jets land. I look forward to them building and hopefully we can have two relevant clubs in NY soon.

I mean if Jax drafted Smith, would anybody say anything about it? It would be the same situation, football wise.
