    Right.

I think you said what I tried to say better than I said it.

When I say he didn't think to do it, I'm saying he didn't think of why he should. His instincts were in the right place at first but another instinct, probably to protect himself from the potential pile up building (I don't know. We can only speculate), he held back.

But the narrative that he held back because he thought he was too precious or too above the game seems a complicated process in the heat of the moment.

The simplest likelihood is he didn't think of the ramifications of that play that quickly (which I agree is poor football awareness) and instead only thought about potential injury.

Either way, he should have dove for the ball considering the situation so I'm just talking in circles about this. Which is probably more ridiculous so time for me to stop.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Sometimes people just do things. Sometimes people just don't do things.

      Most likely, that's the explanation.

Pretty much my line of thought on this. I can't make a proper conclusion one way or another but you see that sort of behavior from dozens of other quarterbacks on turnovers where they just sort of get out of the way rather than attempt to make a tackle, even if they're the only thing between the defender and the endzone.

Cam had a brain fart. He's probably been taught NOT to dive into dog piles for fumbles. Qbs don't do that. So perhaps he subconsciously retreated in that scenario. He had a brain fart. Do you really think he was too big or too selfish in that moment? The guy who constantly runs qb dives, flips over defenders, runs head first into defenders for one yard, was too concerned with his own safety there?

It was an incredibly bad look for Cam Newton, but I wouldn't make character criticisms based on that one single play. People are enjoying Cams misery a bit too much this week. That much is clear. Been waiting a long time for this.

Some are and have waited a long time for this day for sure. What bothers me is any person who offers criticism automatically being labeled a "Cam *****". Same goes for the other side going above and beyond to defend him. Seems to me those of us in the middle are the outcasts feeling pressure to pick a side. Whole thing is rather silly.

I mean, we remember Brees diving in a pile for a ball, right?

That was one play though. We don't see many players get hurt from going for the ball like that. All I'm saying is if you can jump over defenders and try and run through them you can attempt to dive on the ball. I could maybe see the injury card if it's week 2 but it's the super bowl and let's be honest that turnover was crucial.

How crucial was it? The Panthers were out of it 10 minutes into the first quarter.

Carolina trailed by only six with approx 5 mins to go when Cam declined to go for the loose ball. Recovering the fumble all but guaranteed that Denver would make it a two score game and, for all intents and purposes, put the game out of reach.

Cam has this problem where he thinks that if something is true then it's ok to say out loud.
