    Re: Official Carolina Panthers thread

The Carolina Panthers have decided on rookie Tony Pike as their No. 3 quarterback over Hunter Cantwell.

Bruce Tollner, Cantwell's agent, said his client has been released. The move comes as the Panthers must cut 22 players Saturday to reach the 53-man regular-season limit.

The 6-foot-6 Pike was Carolina's sixth-round pick out of Cincinnati. After throwing only one pass in the first three preseason games, he was 10 of 18 for 44 yards while playing the entire second half against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday.

Pike will be behind starter Matt Moore and rookie backup Jimmy Clausen on the Panthers' depth chart.

WR Kenny Moore and OG CJ Davis are cut. Moore being cut helps the chances of WR/KR Trent Guy to stick IMO.

The Carolina Panthers have released DT Tank Tyler, DT Corvey Irvin, CB Brian Witherspoon and CB C.J. Wilson

I'm kinda shocked Tank Tyler was released, I'm guessing that means Derek Landri is gonna stick? Hate to see Brian Witherspoon go, I like his game. Also looks like C.J. Wilson's release will make room for CB/FS Marcus Hudson.

Dwayne Jarrett got arrested again for drunk driving. Hopefully, they cut this fool now.

For the few of you guys that care, DeAngelo won't be in Charlotte next season unless the team franchises him. He thinks his lack of touches is due to the incentives in his contract. His agent has told people in Memphis that the Colts and Pats is the most likely destination.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. We had better Franchise him.

Franchise him or go with Stewart and Goodson. This season has been a disaster. I'm not even sure what good coach will want to come to Charlotte next season to rebuild this offense.

I only take some comfort in knowing that this will be OC Jeff Davidson's last year in Carolina.

I hope we cut Jarrett after the DUI nonsense.

Also, how the hell does DeAngelo think he's gonna get MORE carries in Indy or NE? They pass the ball 60% of the time or more.

Anyway, I can't blame any offensive player that wants out after the trainwreck of a season including Smitty, DeAngelo, or Gross.

Too bad it took this long for the panthers to release this bust. I was wishing they took the other Steve Smith, who has been to a pro bowl for the giants now.

I mean, last year...they BOTH rush for over 1,000 yards and now...you know...they aren't doing anything to help our bottom-of-the-league offense.

Jeff Davidson is the worst offensive play caller I've ever seen and people are under-estimating the importance of RT Jeff Otah being out all season so far. He is a huge road grader and his backup, Geoff Schwartz, isn't near the same level of blocker. Also Mackenzie Bernadeau is starting at RG for the first time in his career this season, last year it was veteran Keydrick Vincent. I think there is some drop off in performance there too.

                          Rebuilding The Carolina Panthers

I am a long time Panther fan, and I have been following since I became sentient to the sport, 2000 season. I started listening them on the radio (Real Player) on the website when it was free until 2002 when they began to charge a fee - that is when I would watch them on GameCast on NFL.com that told me play-by-plays. After the Super Bowl season in 2003, I acquired DirecTV and haven't missed a Panther game since. Although sometimes I was forced to miss them live, I would shut my cell phone off, go home and watch them without knowing who won or lost.

Following the team through the years, they became like a part of my family... watching these guys play and having most of the same players year after year: Jake Delhomme, Muhsin Muhammad, Brad Hoover, Steve Smith, Julius Peppers, just to name a few --- a lot of teams have guys come and go. We had the same players occupying the same position consistently.

2010, this did not feel like the same Panther team I have been accustomed to growing up. Jake Delhomme, Muhsin Muhammad, Brad Hoover, Julius Peppers (favorite player) - all of those besides John Kasay and Steve Smith that were part of that Super Bowl team, that magical 2003 year are all gone. I am not a big fan of change, but I know it must happen. I have not enjoyed any games this year, all of the losses were blow outs like 37-13. I became utterly disgusted that I had to sit here and watch these guys. Any normal person would change the channel, but not me. I look up at the plaques mounted on my wall and the memorabilia that showcase the pride of the Carolina Panthers, their integrity all through the years - now, all lost.

It was a heartbreaker for me, taking a 14 hour train to Cleveland from New Jersey and then 14 hours back to just see a hopeless comeback win fall short... When I saw Jimmy Clausen throw that interception, I thought the game was over. Instead, later on with time winding down... Clausen threw a clutch pass to Brandon LaFell with five seconds left. We had no time outs but because of an official review, a time out was called to see if LaFell had caught it in bounds. I jumped out of my seat and began cheering. I saw John Kasay, the original Panther who has been on the team since their birth in 1995, step out onto the field. Kasay kicks... MISSED IT. It was devastating. Cleveland was like 30 degrees and it was a cold time getting back to my hotel, disgusted.

Hope my story didn't bring a tear to your eye, but here are my ideas to restore the Carolina Panthers pride.

                          Ideas:
Quarterback Situation- I do not know why Jake Delhomme was released, because it seems that the disaster season for the Panthers wasn't his fault because Matt Moore played worse than he did. My idea, obtain Michael Vick in the offseason. It was stated in the previous off-season, should Vick be traded or released that he wanted to play for the Carolina Panthers. I have not seen any motivation by the Eagles to try and snatch him with an extension. Michael Vick is a FA next year, and Carolina needs to jump on that. Jimmy Clausen is a prospect and it will take maybe three years for him to get off the bench anyway.

Jonathan Stewart- Trade away Smash. I know, this sounds ridiculous, but the Panthers wont be able to afford him anyway when his rookie contract is up. Plus, Mike Goodson has stepped up his game and proven to be a more versatile, change of pace back. Trade Stewart away for a defensive lineman or a draft pick while he still has value.

1st Round Pick: Draft a Wide Receiver. I am tired of these bargain-basement complimentary wide receivers the Carolina Panthers always get. Drew Carter, Keary Colbert, Dwayne Jarrett (too early to say Gettis and LaFell but they do not look like the answer). Since 2004, we been looking for a replacement to fill in Muhammad's shoes after his departure, instead to find Muhammad as his own replacement in 2008 (12-4 record). Get the best Wide Receiver in the draft or free agency: ANTONIO BRYANT is available.

Coach- Keep John Fox, fire Jeff Davidson ---- if John Fox is not resigned, then go after Tony Dungy. Dungy is a defensive mastermind and Ron Meeks (defensive coordinator) worked with Dungy in Indianapolis, so it would be an easy transaction for Dungy to coach the team instead of starting from scratch to assemble a staff. Plus, if we get Michael Vick - Dungy has good relations with him since he came out of jail, they kept in constant contact cause when everyone doubted Vick - Dungy was his supporter.

Bring Back Brad Hoover- Why was he released? He blocked and paved the way for two running backs who ran for 1,000 yards! Look at how terrible our ground game is, the entire Panthers offense is in shambles, ranked dead last 32nd in the league. I want a good answer to why he was released, because his age should not be an issue after that tremendous year he had in 2009. Tony Fiammetta is Nick Goings 2.0, he is a prospect that needs time to develop (like Clausen). Bring him back.

                            Some good ideas for sure.

I just don't know how realistic it is for Vick to come to the Panthers. The way he is playing this year I would be shocked if the Eagles didn't sign him to at least a four year deal. Dungy seems to be an even longer shot.

I have heard a lot of talk recently for Harbaugh (Stanford) to come in as coach and if we get the first pick in the draft get Luck (QB for Stanford).

Personally, I would like us to get Julio Jones or Patrick Petersen depending if we will have the worst record.

I am just happy that the season is almost over.

                              Re: Rebuilding The Carolina Panthers

At this point I think it's unrealistic to think that John Fox will still be around in the future. From what I've heard his relationship with ownership and the management is completely fractured, because of the tight budget he's been forced to operate under. (I believe Carolina is one of the scroogiest teams in the league when it comes to payroll, and maximizing profit)

Coach has to be the first priority, have to get the right guy in there and start building around that with the staff. I really don't think Dungy wants to get back into Coaching, just from his appearance on NBC and the rumors of the job offers he's gotten that he's allegedly turned down I don't think he's up for a big re-building project. If anything you might be able to talk Cowher back into the fold... I believe he lives in North Carolina and if there's a job he might take it might be there.

Next have to solve the issue at Quarterback, if you look in your Division all these teams have QBs they can rely on, to bring them back and lead to them to wins in the 4th quarter. Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, and Josh Freeman. Carolina needs that franchise guy... I don't think it can be Clausen but maybe he deserves another shake under a different coaching staff. If not you got to figure out what to do there.

I don't understand why they never went after a legit receiver in the draft, or even trade/FA. Smith was AWESOME for a number of years, and single handedly carried them on offense at one point. And they never put anyone on the other side of him. Kind of after the fact at this point.
