    Re: Official Carolina Panthers thread

Here's an optimistic way of looking at Cam (besides the ticket sales he'll bring of course). There isn't much proof of the mobile QB being that of the future, but there is proof that they make a running game better. Both the Falcons and Titans committed to heavy doses of running the ball, and having mobile QBs (Vick for ATL of course) helped open lanes for the backs. When the oline has been healthy, the CAR backs have gone insane even when teams knew they couldn't really pass. That type of offense is also best for young QBs (recently see Flacco and Ryan... we can even go back a bit and look at Big Ben early). So he really is a good fit for a QB that will have to learn on the fly.

Also, lets say the Panthers do end up sucking and get the first pick next year too. They still draft Luck in a heartbeat and will have absolutely no problem trading Cam to someone else.

I hope Newton makes good and we don't have to talk about taking another QB in the 1st round for another 10 years. We have sooo many needs on this team to fill.

I don't agree. There's no certainty of a rookie scale from the new CBA, and no one will take a 1st year QB with $50 mil guaranteed. I don't think the Panthers would take Luck next year with the 1st pick

They won't be able to sign these guys until there's a new CBA anyway, so if there's a rookie scale it should apply to this current draft. Either way though, Cam Newton is a tremendous raw talent. A year in the league would be looked as better than another year of college. Even if he's completely horrible he'd still be considered an early round pick (set to get money that early round picks get... whatever that may be).

            Re: Official Carolina Panthers thread

I thought the Panthers had a pretty good draft all things considered and we didn't trade away any of next year's picks!!

Newton is a tremendous athletic talent and we'll have to wait 3 years or so to see how he performs IMO, as it is for all QBs really.

I like drafting the two DTs in the 3rd round, a very thin position for the team.

I think we got great value in rds 4-7. I like the WR out of Hawaii just based on very limited info I've heard on him.

I love the LB out of UConn.

I'm very hopeful that the CB out of West Virginia can keep his mind on football and really help bolster out secondary with Richard Marshall likely gone.

I also really liked the interior OL we got from Washington State. Good value there IMO.

Not sure that the 7th rd pick of Ziemba, the OT out of Auburn has the footwork to make it in the NFL, but again, we needed OL depth and he was a starter on the BCS Championship team.

So no complaints from me really.

Talent wise I'd grade the draft probably a C+ with potential to be much better if Newton pans out.

From a GM decision making POV, I give Carolina a B+ for sticking to the players they wanted and getting two players I really liked late in the UConn LB and the WSU OL.

@JohnDoe8865 I agree with the picks for the most part. I just wish Carolina would've picked Patrick Peterson (LSU) instead taking another quarterback. I don't know why Panthers fanbase want the team to take Andrew Luck, if Carolina ends up having the worst record in football again in upcoming 2011 season.

I highly doubt that Carolina will have the worst record. They were decimated by injuries last year especially on the OL, and as a result their running game never got going. If Otah is back healthy (no reason to think he won't be) I think we will be around 7-8 wins.

The Panthers want to sell tickets and this will accomplish that, and only that.

Is there any doubt they finish last in the NFC South?

That's true O-Line couldn't stay healthy most of last year. I think they'll be the focus of 2011 a little bit more than quarterback position. If Jeff Otah stays away from injury bug & J.C. plays well, Carolina can at least 8 games (even thought Panthers have the toughest schedule in the league). If not, it'll be the same old story as last year.

The bad part is, after the inevitable 1-5 or 0-6 start, people will stop coming to the games and ticket sales will go back down. There is absolutely no doubt they finish last considering many "experts" loved the drafts of the other teams in the division (and they all have legit QBs)

I really hate that the other NFC South teams all had really good drafts on paper. It would have been a nice year for some of those teams to reach or make stupid looking picks. I will say that ATL and NO gave up a 1st round pick next year, which could come back to bite one of them, and FINALLY, we didn't trade ours.

Unfortunately, it's not too late for them to trade next year's 1st rounder for Charlie Whitehurst or do something else ridiculous.

Hopefully losing those 1st round picks set back the franchises for 5+ years like picking Cam will for the Panthers...........

Not that this response was directed toward my post, but I certainly hope he does very well as a Panthers fan. I am just very skeptical of that happening. Traditionally, QBs that played 1 year of D1 football in a spread offense where they made as many plays with their legs as with their arm, do not succeed in the NFL. Hearing him on the radio and in interviews, he also is really defensive towards criticism (namely the Gruden QB camp piece) which rubs me the wrong way a bit.

I'm also an Alabama fan, so it's tough for me to like Cam, but I am trying... sort of

Naw that wasn't directed at you. Just people in general who's always criticizing him. There's alot of people in the media and guys on these web site that really just don't like Cam and hope he fails and nit pick any little thing he does. So I'll be cheering for him to succeed just to prove alot of the doubters wrong. It will really be sweet if do it year one but I can't put no money on that because of how poor of an offense he's gotta work with.
