Re: Official San Francisco 49ers thread
Something I found a few days ago on 49ers message board.
The list of four finalists, we've been told, includes two members of the Ron Wolf cabal, and two members of the Belichick/Pioli tree.
1. John Schneider: Young but well traveled, Scheinder technically is listed as the personnel analyst to the General Manager. But his job description refers to his duties under former G.M. Mike Sherman, and his new role in the Ted Thompson regime likely will change, especially since Sherman also spent a lot of his time moonlighting as the coach of the team.
With a talented front office in Green Bay already a bit on the crowded side even before Thompson's arrival, it might be time for Schneider, 33, to make his move. Schneider worked for Wolf in Green Bay, and also has spent time with Redskins, Chiefs, and Seahawks.
2. Scot McCloughan: Another up-and-comer, McCloughan has served as Director of College Scouting with the Seahawks since 2000. McCloughan got his start with the Packers. His desire to move might hinge on whether he receives a promotion (which is possible) after the dust settles in the 'Hawks front office. He could be bumped, for example, into the position that Ted Thompson held before leaving for the Packers.
McCloughan quietly has developed a strong reputation, but we'd suggest that, for any future interviews, he should be ready to 'splain the decision to select Koren Robinson with the first pick in McCloughan's first draft with the team.
3. Jason Licht: Another youngster, Licht has served as assistant director of player personnel in Philly since May 2003, after serving for four seasons in the Patriots' personnel department, culminating in the position of assistant director of player personnel. He also has worked with the Dolphins and the Panthers.
4. Tom Dimitroff, Jr.: Dimitroff currently serves as the Patriots' director of college scouting. He worked from 1998 through 2001 with the Browns, where his father, Tom, Sr., worked on a long-term basis as a scout.
There's no word at this point as to whether any of these guys has the inside track to the job, and we're not ruling out the possibility of other candidates. For now, though, it looks like the winner will come from this quartet.Comment

Re: Official San Francisco 49ers thread
Continuing the process for a new personnel chief, the 49ers interviewed two well-respected candidates Wednesday in Santa Clara as Jacksonville Jaguars director of pro personnel Charles Bailey and Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager/football operations Chris Polian met separately with team officials.
Bailey just concluded his second season in his position with the Jaguars and has 25 years of personnel experience. Bailey is responsible for overseeing the scouting and evaluation of all pro personnel, as well as advance scouting. Prior to joining the Jaguars, he spent 14 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints, helping both of those teams to several playoff appearances.
Bailey was the Saints assistant general manager of football operations from 1999 to 2001. In that role, he was responsible for scouting and evaluating talent on the Saints and around the NFL, as well as college scouting and other administrative duties. He also served as a member of the executive board for the 2002 Super Bowl Host Committee in New Orleans.
Bailey was with the Steelers from 1989 to ’99 and was an integral part of the club’s Super Bowl XXX appearance after the 1995 season. In his 10 years with the Steelers, he served three years in college scouting and seven years as the club’s pro personnel coordinator.
Polian just completed his first season as the Colts assistant general manager/football operations and pro personnel. Polian served the previous three seasons as the assistant director of football operations. From 1998-00, he served as Indianapolis’ director of pro scouting.
Polian has extensive NFL experience, including spending time with the Carolina Panthers (1994-96, Pro Scout; 1997, Pro Personnel Coordinator). He was an assistant in player personnel for the Sacramento Gold Miners in 1993.Comment
