**** These faces are made for prospects, superstars, veterans and enforcers. So why does this guy have his real face in the game? He only played four seasons in the NHL, mostly as a 4th liner. He never scored more than 10 goals in one season. He wasn't an enforcer. He was 30 years old when this game was made. Why?

Haha, the NHL has changed so much since then...

So too has the process of adding likenesses. The part about real faces only being for superstars and veterans thankfully doesn't apply anymore now that dev teams can scan players. Just look at the Miami Heat in NBA 2k14. All the players you'd expect have their faces, but so did a guy like Joel Anthony. If you had to google who he is, I've made my point. Hopefully NHL 15 brings this series even with the other games in this regard.

So too has the process of adding likenesses. The part about real faces only being for superstars and veterans thankfully doesn't apply anymore now that dev teams can scan players. Just look at the Miami Heat in NBA 2k14. All the players you'd expect have their faces, but so did a guy like Joel Anthony. If you had to google who he is, I've made my point. Hopefully NHL 15 brings this series even with the other games in this regard.

Based on a handful of observations thus far, I would not hold my breath.

First off, they haven't shown a single image of a player whose face wasn't present in NHL 14 in any of the promotional images for 15. Guys like Ryan McDonagh, who didn't have a face last year but rose to extreme prominence this season while playing a massive role in his team's trip to the SCF would be prime candidates for being shown in a screen, but all of the screens and every player who was specifically keyed in on in the trailer is one who has had their face in for some time already, suggesting that not a lot of new faces have been added at all.

Second, of the players they have shown, none of them have been updated and almost all of the faces they've shown are scans that are quite old and thus very outdated. Patrick Kane still looks 9 years old. Patrice Bergeron has his rookie face, looking nothing like himself. Joe Thornton's scan is equally old and outdated. Rick Nash in the trailer still has round, bare cheeked cherub face.

Finally, EA's track record with faces in the NHL games is simply atrocious. Last year there were about 75 CURRENT NHL players who had scans in the game code but were given generic faces when the game released. It was only through the development of NHLview and the ability to alter things like face codes for players that the community was able to uncover and restore these faces. The fact that that many players had faces IN the game and EA just wasn't using them is kind of baffling. We're talking Liles, Jokinen, Dupuis, Cole, Cullen, Fisher, Tanguay, Malholtra, Moore, Visnovsky, Markov, Thomas and dozens more. EA did the scans and built the faces. They just decided to assign them all wildly inaccurate generics somewhere along the way and stop using their actual faces. Why? We'll never know (granted, most of these faces are dated and poorly done as well). In addition, they released lists of dozens of prospects whose faces were scanned for inclusion over the past several years but never made it into the game. We're talking dating back to the 2012 draft, possibly even earlier. If guys were scanned at the 2012 draft and didn't make it in by 2014, what was EA even doing with the scans?

So, we see pictures of Eddie Lack getting his face scanned and get our hopes up. I wouldn't hold my breath. If he was scanned this year and guys scanned years ago still haven't made it into the game, chances are we'll see his face in 3-4 years. I'd love to be wrong because I only play offline GM and love for my rosters and players to be as accurate as possible so I can feel like I'm playing a real, deeply immersive season, but I just have ZERO faith that EA's NHL is capable of delivering in this department anymore. The worst part is knowing that stuff like this exists:





That's PS3 FIFA. Last gen. So, as a company, EA has the technology readily available to create incredibly accurate faces. They simply don't give enough of a crud to do so.

Yes, the NHL series doesn't have the same budget as the FIFA series but would it be too complicated to use something like Game Face for players without a face scan? It takes just a few minutes and looks way more realistic than a generic face..at least give us the option to do it ourselves

Exactly. I get that FIFA is on a larger budget with greater resources but the fact that those are last gen faces for FIFA and they are produced by the same company, means the possibility of sharing technology and equipment, especially at different times of the development cycles, ought to at least be possible. Even if it isn't, FIFA getting the deluxe scans should at least inspire EA's other studios to want to get more faces in and do a SLIGHTLY better job with them. As you said, game face would be an easy solution. With a little work browsing google images, I'm sure I could find reasonable candid pictures with which to make decent game faces for the players EA neglects. Certainly better than their bland generic faces. If EA can't be bothered to do it themselves (I'm sure if they can't get players to come in or sit for scans they can at least get them to sit still for quick frontal/profile photos throughout the year, or send them in themselves) than, like you said, just leave it open in the editor for those of us who care to do it ourselves. Though then they'd have to give us game face in the first place.

Brad Marchand has a new face, Henrik Lundqvist and Patrice Bergeron were updated. Nothing else can be confirmed.

Meanwhile, right across the hall from NHL...
