    Re: NHL 2K8 Editor (Snowdrift)

NEW VERSION OF THE EDITOR (APRIL 11, 2018)

    NEW FEATURE:
By default, when a player's name is edited via the editor, all commentary data for that player is removed. This prevents the commentators from continuing to pronounce his old name. As of this version, a new checkbox under the Option menu, "Clear commentary data on name edit", allows the user to turn off this behavior. This is useful because it enables a "hack" that allows modifying a player so that the commentator pronounces a different name than the one displayed for him. Steps to do this:

    1. Edit name within the game itself to whatever you want pronounced.
    2. Open the save file in the editor and uncheck "Clear commentary data".
    3. Rename the player whatever you want. The old name will still be pronounced.

Editing the player's attributes in-game (other than his name) won't reset the pronunciation.

EDIT: Note that most player names in NHL 2K8 are hard-coded in the save file. As a result, this hack may not work unless you have used the editor to remove the hard-coded name. To do this for one individual player, just edit his name to anything in the editor and confirm the edit while the "Clear commentary" box is checked. To do it for all players in the save file at once, run the "Dissociate name pronunciations" action from the Batch menu. Note that once a player's hard-coded name has been erased from a save file, you never have to worry about it again.

    BUG FIXES:
    - Fixed a spreadsheet-export bug where the editor exported a player twice if he was in the minors. The bug applied only to Season/Franchise save files and also caused the player to be created twice when importing from the exported spreadsheet.
    - Fixed a memory leak triggered when exporting spreadsheets.

I don't know the algorithm behind skater overall ratings (I do for goalies), so the editor only estimates them. The game corrects them if you enter and exit the Edit Player menu, as long as you select "Yes" to save when exiting.

When you imported my roster spreadsheet, the editor estimated the overall ratings instead of reading them from the spreadsheet (that will be changed in the next version of the editor). So when you edited a player in-game, the game corrected his rating.

What's funny is that the editor the 2k developers used obviously didn't calculate overalls correctly either. Load the default rosters and enter/exit the Edit menu for a few goalies. You'll notice most have the wrong rating, and the game corrects them if you confirm "Yes" when exiting. This was even worse in 2K5.

If you make any player status change (Dress/Scratch, whatever) in the Roster menus, the game resets the lines. Really annoying so I always just use the Lines menu for everything.

That's interesting! Will that mean that when I import your roster from a spreadsheet from PS3 to 360 that I won't have to adjust the players again in-game? It's so frustrating to port your rosters over because twice now I've had to go into the menu for EVERY player to give them a PBP match/make sure their stats update. Wonder if PBP carries over in a spreadsheet now too...

Some historic teams in my updated NHL 2K10 PS2 rosters actually changed stats upon entering/exiting the menu. so that problem existed until the end for these games.

UPDATE TO THE EDITOR (APRIL 22, 2018)

I was waiting to add more features to the editor before posting an update, but I haven't had the time to breathe in the past two weeks. So I'm just releasing what I have for now.

                BETTER SPREADSHEET IMPORT BEHAVIOR:

(1.) New "Import" option shown when importing a spreadsheet. It reads the Overall, Offense and Defense ratings directly from the spreadsheet. This guarantees that the imported players will have the same overall ratings as when you exported them. Of course, it won't help you if the ratings were already wrong, or if you tampered with the spreadsheet after exporting it!

(2.) The option to zero-out overall ratings was eliminated, as it is useless in most cases and not recommended. If you really need to do this for some reason, just edit the overalls in the spreadsheet to zero yourself, using Excel.

                Download the editor here.

The overall ratings in my rosters are mostly correct (some exceptions), and now they will be imported with the players. I'd like to try adding support for importing/exporting play-by-play as soon as I can find the time. Until then, I suggest you edit changes into your existing roster by hand to save yourself headaches. I always explain what I changed in my posts so it shouldn't be a problem.

Also, when I add new players to my rosters, you can just import the entire new roster over your existing one. It will only bring in the new players, since the editor skips players if their name is already used. (The two Sebastian Ahos in the last update will give you trouble, but that's a rare occurrence!)

Just watch out for those missing player errors... I've now run out of hard-coded TWO-WAY players as well, so am having to create new ones. And remember to keep backups, as I've learned the hard way.

                PLAYER-TYPE EQUIVALENCIES :

Speaking of hard-coded player types, there's something I forgot to explain about them. If ever you want to create a DEFENSEMAN in the game (not talking about the editor here), and want to ensure that his player type sticks, create him as a forward instead, keeping the following type-correspondence in mind:

To get an OFFENSIVE defenseman, create a SCORER.
To get a DEFENSIVE defenseman, create a UTILITY player.
To get a COMPLETE defenseman, create a PLAYMAKER.
To get an ENFORCER or FINESSE d-man, create a forward of the same type.

Then, AFTER he is created, change his POSITION to DEFENSEMAN in the Roster menu (or editor). This is better than relying on the game's glitchy Create-a-player interface, and will guarantee that his player type doesn't change on you, as long as you follow the rules I've described before for creating forwards.

(As far as the editor goes, it will never ask you to create defensemen. It will always ask you to create forwards and will take care of converting them to defensemen itself. So this is just here in case anyone wants to create their own players apart from the editor.)

Amazing update, this should make maintaining an updated 360 roster a cinch.

I recently picked up blank CD-R's and put updated goal horns for all teams into the game, definitely adds to the experience. I'm gonna put in stoppage music too.

                    I have some more questions/suggestions:

                    1. Any chance we could get an option to restore a player's menu/in-game face? (Since these are removed automatically upon import) For example, if I want to have the faces of specific players still active from the 2006-07 season on the current roster, or, if I want to do a historical roster project where many of the current faces could still be used. Maybe an option in the right-click menu?
                    2. Is changing a team's default logo/jersey possible? Like, the Leafs, Penguins and Sabres' old logos are in the game and available for the player to use. It would be more accurate to the current era if we had the option to use them instead of what we've got.
                    3. Sadly, 360 franchise/season files aren't supported. So I don't know if this feature is already in on PS3 but: is changing the Start Year possible like NHL 2004 (your franchise can start in 2017-18, is what I'm suggesting) Slightly unrelated but players like Evgeni Malkin appear as rookies in Franchise, I wonder why that is...
                    4. You know how most players in NHL 2K8 have stats summaries by default by clicking R3/RS? Those are wiped upon using your editor, in the future would it be possible to edit these? It would be a time consuming process but it would be cool to have the feature there showing season by season stats, which are usually readily available via Wikipedia.

Custom goal horns work in this game well, I just took FamousGoalHorns' YouTube videos and converted them to MP3's and burned them to a disc for my personal use.

There's like a delay of half a second when you score, but it's worth it for teams like the Canucks to have a correct horn.

It's a bit more complicated on a 360 than just importing music. CDs will have to be burned first of all, and then once all the music is in the 360 you then have to make playlists with songs you want for different scenarios (offplay, penalty-home, away goal, etc etc). Then you assign those playlists in the game. Takes a while. Plus, when you import the songs, they're only called "Track 01, Track 02..." etc so you really have to pay attention to what you've ripped to the console, what tracks correspond to what playlists you have planned from before. Anyway, doable, but tedious. I had done it years ago for other games so it was easy to add more tracks. I have tons on there now so it's worth it to get it done once so you can then add tracks to your existing playlists.

UPDATE TO THE EDITOR (v0.11) APRIL 28, 2018

                            NEW FEATURE:
A player's play-by-play data now remains intact across spreadsheet exporting and importing. (Note that spreadsheets created with old versions of the editor will not contain any play-by-play data.)

I'm not sure if this will work for 360 users if the spreadsheet was created from a PS3 roster. If someone wants to test it, use my latest roster file and check if any names are called for either Anaheim, Montreal, Nashville or Ottawa: those are the easiest teams to test.

I've tried it before but it seems impossible. Any attempts to edit team data usually end in major glitches.

This feature has been planned for a long time, because I initially wanted all of the players in my rosters to have accurate stats for previous seasons. It's low on my list of priorities, although I've made good progress toward understanding how the stats are saved for forwards and defensemen (not so much for goalies).

The game considers a lot of players on my roster rookies. The commentators often say "He's just in his first season" for 38-year old players... It's probably just because they have no stats for past seasons.

Sorry if you've answered this... what's involved in letting players still active in the league today keep the headshots they had in 2K8? Marleau, Thornton, Malkin, Ovechkin, etc etc. Unreasonable to do without ridiculous amounts of effort?

Snowdrift I can confirm the PBP data transfer from a spreadsheet works on Xbox 360 as well. It's easier than ever to convert your rosters over now. I'm so happy.
