So what happens if this new ownership group turns out to be a dud?

Will the NHL take back control of the franchise again?

The NHL still has control of the franchise. They'll either have to move them real quick-who is ready to take an NHL team on a few months notice?? or just keep running them for one more year. Glendale is taking 25M worth of the losses off the league's hands.

        Fixed.

I don't know how these people can't see that it's almost impossible to turn a profit there. They had to give away some of their tickets for the PLAYOFFS...and the ones that they did sell cost less than what most teams charge for regular season games. They've had a good team for three years now and still only managed to average around 12k for home games. I don't get it. The first few years at the luxury box-less Colisee in Quebec would be rough, but at least they could charge premium prices and sell the place out.

          Completely agree.
But to play Devil's Advocate, there is absolutely nothing appealing about the Phoenix Coyote's.
They make the 2003 Devils look like the '87 Oilers.
There is nobody on that team worth watching and their style of play is reminiscent of watching paint dry.
Yes, they win, but sports is about entertainment.
Former boxer John Ruiz won a lot too, but his style and method of winning was so incredibly boring, that only his family members would pay to watch him fight.

They may end up staying in Glendale, but until they're able to groom a legit star ala Stamkos or Giroux, they'll have to continue giving away playoff tickets.
I'm not even sure a Cup win would help this franchise.

            Re: Broke Yotes!!

So we forge on through the courts. Some random guy who :rolls eyes: has nothing to do with the Barry Goldwater Group, is collecting signatures to get this on the ballot in a couple months. Barry Goldwater says they're done because it's going to the voters. Glendale says, signatures had to be turned in yesterday, this guy says he has until the 16th. So he's going to send them in next year, Glendale already says they will tell him they're no good. He'll take them to court over it. NHL says August 1st is the deadline, and they say they have a 31 team schedule in place, and Phoenix will simply not exist. They say Quebec can't take the team in time, which of course, no one could with how long this has been dragged out, and so they'd get an expansion team in 2013 or 2014. Doesn't make sense to me though, the league owns the team. They get nothing if it doesn't exist. But Glendale won't agree to take cover 25M worth of losses, because they don't have it. League won't take it either. The playoff run into the western finals, didn't seem to help the bottom line nearly as much as you'd think it should. That of course, just begs the obvious question, who in their right mind would try to buy this team? let alone go through the ridiculous number of hoops you have to go through to do it...

I think you mean they have a 29 team schedule ready. There are 30 teams in the current NHL, not 32.

The league would probably rake in twice as much selling an expansion franchise than just selling the existing Coyotes franchise to someone who will move them, on top of not having to operate the franchise at a loss for another year.

Euthanize the 'Yotes. Put that team and city out of its misery.
                NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
                NFL - Buffalo Bills
                MLB - Cincinnati Reds

So what happens to everyone on Phoenix's roster if there's no team next season?

Do the players just automatically become free agents?

                    I'd assume a dispersal draft.

Yandle to Philly for free. YES. YES. YES.

In all seriousness, it's probably the only logical thing left to do at this point. There's no way QC would be able to prepare themselves in 3 months. Give them an expansion team after this whole mess is straightened out.

At least he did it for Phoenix, America's hockey hotbed.

I still don't buy it. I don't think the 'Yotes are going anywhere, anytime soon.
If Phoenix is forced to move, it's a major blow to Gary's ego and makes him look extremely bad considering how hard he fought off Ballsillie and his plans to move a sinking team.

I think the NHL will go to the wall with this situation in order to keep the Coyotes where they are.
If anything, I think Gary's plan is to sell short, and then when the new owner can't make a go of it, the team will be moved - but at least Gary doesn't have as much blood on his hands in that scenario.

So delay it another few years? That sounds like a terrible idea. Which is precisely why you're probably right.

He's having trouble getting investors as is...and even if he does get people, they'll be jumping ship in 2 years tops.

They made it to the West Finals and had Glendale cover $25 million and they STILL ended up in the red. It's not going to work under any circumstances, especially now that Glendale has cut them off financially.
