This judge's name should be Redfield T. Stalling. Today he was supposed to rule on the matter of Balsille's bid being accepted in the general auction but instead we had a long drawn out court proceeding with nothing happening.

Tell me about it. I'm starting to think that this judge is scared and lacks the nuts to set a precedent.

It's like he's hoping to stall it more and more until one of the parties makes a decision so he won't have to.
Maybe he's hoping that if he stalls it to the point where the season begins Ballsillie will finally say "Okay, I'll wait until after this season to move" so he can avoid the relocation now issue.
Or maybe he's praying the NHL will get a bidder who will keep the team in Glendale and pay off a majority of the creditors. Who knows?

But Ballsillie might be starting to bend a bit. It sounded like he was game to start the season in Phoenix and move it half-way through. That's completely unrealistic but maybe he's starting to get wise and figuring out that he could get this team now if he just let the team die out one last year in Glendale.

        Holy Crap!

According to court filings the League has set the relocation fee to Hamilton at 101 to 195 Million bucks! which is not surprising but DAMN man!

Say what you want against Balsillie but you got to admire his willingness to fight.

And it looks like Ballsillie is willing to keep the team in Phoenix for this season:

I honestly can't see the judge not awarding this team to JB. It's a lock now.
The creditors are happy, he has the highest bid and he's willing to keep the team there for 1 more season before moving them - just like the NHL is planning to do with an offer that's almost 50% of what JB is offering.

Open and shut in my mind.

EDIT: I'm still not sure why Ballsillie wants the team in Hamilton as opposed to Waterloo (where he's from).
Waterloo is exactly 58 miles from Toronto. Which means it's not within the 50 mile infringement radius set by the NHL.

His wife is from Hamilton, seems to me he's buying the team and moving it there as some sort of present to her. I'm sure she won't have any direct involvement with the team but she must be a fan of hockey.

At least that's what I heard.

                Really? That's hilarious!

P.S. I still think I'll laugh my butt off if this whole thing was to buy a team, move it to a better market only to sell it for a huge profit.
Can you imagine if JB did that? Hahaha!

I think the idea of being in Hamilton is to have a more centralized location to draw from the surrounding areas as much as possible. I mean Copps Coliseum is one factor, but if you look at the surrounding communities, you have Western Mississauga/Oakville, which is a huge upper middle class suburban community now. You've got Kitchener-Waterloo less than an hour away, and the Niagara region as well. Plus of course, the city of Hamilton itself.

Putting the team in Hamilton makes it less than an hour away from a population base well over 1 million.

And it'll sell out every night without any issues.
I just laugh at those that think they'll finally get 'affordable' tickets unlike at the ACC.
If Hamilton had an NHL franchise the tickets would be nearly identical.

I think the first couple years the ticket prices will be lower then what the Leafs command at the ACC if only for good PR. I have a feeling in 5-6 years the ticket prices will be two tiered, one set of prices for the corporate crowd and another tier for the regular fan as it'd be ludicrous to force hard working folks in Hamilton and the outer reaches of the GTA to pay the same kind of prices people fork over to see the Leafs.

The ticket prices really are ridiculous for the Leafs and I think a Hamilton team would be right up there in no time. They won't have any problems getting 18,000 bodies in Copps.

A friend of mine has season tickets to the Leafs and sells most of the games off (ends up profiting), so I usually get to go for free, but times I've gone and paid for tickets at the box office I was near $200 for two. Compare that to a Kings/Sharks game at the Staples Center two years ago. I got excellent seats for $22 each, plus the crowd were surprisingly excellent hockey fans, the place was also packed and had a great atmosphere. All this while watching the Sharks beat the crap out of their awful team. I was really impressed.

I heard a story on XM where two Leaf fans couldn't get tickets to a game, or the tix were too expensive.
So instead they found 2 cheap tickets to a Panthers-Leafs game in Florida, got airfare and hotel and it was still cheaper than going to the ACC.

I might actually try a fun trip like that this year. Especially when you consider you can get round trip flights from Detroit to Florida for less than $50US.

I had fun watching the Wings come to Phoenix, so the road game thing would probably be a blast.

You know the ticket prices will just skyrocket if demand is as big as Balsillie's saying...maybe not to Leafs level, but damn expensive for sure.

My favorite quote from todays TSN article:

The NHL said even $195 million would not begin to address the true damage done to the league by moving the team.

                                --

LMAO. What damages? Taking a sinking ship, perennial in the red team and moving them to a sure fire location, with a plan for arena expansions and a city that would embrace them lovingly, how would this damage the league? Unless higher league revenues is a bad thing.

The only people left damaged is the city of Glendale who has a facility with no tenant, but at least Balsillie threw them a bone. Otherwise I don't see how anyone else is hurt, besides the handful of fans I suppose.

No way Phoenix is worth $242 mil, let alone another 100-200 mil in relocation fees, nearly half a billion? LOL. For them? We're not talking the Leafs, Habs or Rangers here.

This whole thing blows my mind.
