No surprise that Jack Johnson was on the Ice when the Canucks scored.

The guy cannot defend anyone to safe his life.

    A total Bust IMO.

its seems to me you could win the stanley cup just by not being a bunch of morons

EDIT: actually just looked up the stats and most teams actually score about 3 times as many goals at even strength as opposed to power play

for some reason it seemed like more to me
It's a lot closer in the playoffs.
I know it's only 2 days of playoff hockey but over the last 7 games the average goals per game is roughly 4.47 and the average amount of even-strength goals is 2.44 compared to 2.03 PPG/game.
So it's about 50-50 right now.

I don't see those numbers changing a whole lot throughout the postseason.
Playoff hockey is so tight and defenses are so good that your special teams will make or break you.
      Even-strength is basically a non-factor in today's NHL playoffs.

Those Green Men would be distracting as hell to me. Any time someone is inches away from your face in full spandex with their nuts on the glass, you're in danger. Props to LA for surviving that!

I'm SHOCKED that the Canadiens totally dominated Ovechkin last night to the point that he didn't even register a shot on goal.

          That's a feat in itself.

I know. But I don't think he's 100%. The TSN guys said that his personal trainer is in town and the only time he's around during the season is if OA's injured.
Also, they pointed out how Ovechkin wasn't driving wide on dmen like he usually does.

Still, the Habs defense needs to be commended for keying on him so well. And this is when players like Semin, Backstrom, Green, Knuble and Fehr have to step up. Everyone knows to key on Ovie, so they have to capitalize (pun intended) with the extra room.

There were 4 other players on the ice when they scored too.

I think 5-on-5 is much more of a factor than it was in the Dead Puck Era. Your Wings are an excellent example. A poor PP in 2008 (9th out of 16) and atrocious PK last year (14th) didn't stop them from one Cup and almost a second. Detroit was dominant in 5-on-5 during both postseasons, however.

Well they spend a lot more time at even strength than they do on the power play. You would have to break it down to how many goals are scored per minute even strength vs power play. I'm sure power play will come out ahead, I'm just too lazy to do the math for it.

True, but one team doesn't tell the whole story.

                    For this year:

Regular Season totals - 6803 Total Goals, 1655 PP = 32.1% PP goals.
                    Playoffs Totals - 33 Goals, 15 PP = 45% PP goals.

We're only 7 games in, but it'll be interesting to see how much ES has to do with wins. So far, ES is barely ahead.

                      Small sample size much?

Anyway, my favourite thing about the playoffs, especially the first round, is the unpredictability. Everybody talks about "locks" to win certain series (I fall into this trap myself from time to time), but NOTHING should be surprising anymore.

Since 1994 (when the NHL went to 1-8 conference seeding):

                      #1 seeds are 22-8 vs #8 seeds
                      #2 seeds are 16-14 vs #7 seeds

Compare this to the NBA. Since 1993 (added extra year because of NHL lockout):

                      #1 seeds are 27-3* vs #8 seeds
                      #2 seeds are 29-1* vs #7 seeds

                      * 3 of the 4 upsets were in best-of-5 series. Since the NBA went to a best-of-7 first round in 2004, 1/2 seeds are a combined 23-1 in the first round (Warriors over Mavs in 2007 being the lone exception)
