Flyers need to keep the pedal to the metal in Game 5. With Laps and Carts back for their first game at home since the NJ series, the emotions will be high. Those two didn't miss a beat... and that's almost miraculous for Laperrierre with his injury and his style of play.

Has Leighton had the quietest 3 of 4 shutouts ever? I think huge credit goes to the D. Leighton hasn't had to be Superman, he just stops the shots, and the defense clears it away. What a core of defensemen we have... even our 3rd pairing (Lukas Krajicek/Ryan Parent) is pretty good. Pronger gets all the talk and he deserves it, but Timonen has been absolutely methodical in his defensive game. His hockey sense and knowledge of when and where to poke at the puck is off the charts. He's awesome. Coburn and Carle play a very nice supporting role to these two stars.

Please boys, let's finish this off on Monday!! Keep pushin'!
    I'm praying for the same.

2006. Game 7 featured Carolina's rookie backup (Cam Ward, 3.68 GAA, .882 SV% in regular season) vs Edmonton's journeyman third-stringer (Jussi Markkanen, 3.12 GAA, .880 SV% in regular season). Gonna be tough to ever top that one.

I was thinking about that one but IMO that one could be argued because Ward had an amazing run after he got put in the Montreal series. If it wasn't for him, the Canes probably don't get to the Cup Final or win.

Aside from that year, the previous years had Khabibulin, Kiprusoff, Giguere, Broduer, Roy, Hasek but then my memory starts to fade after that.

Yep, another good game, but the Sharks are having trouble with finishing games. If they could they would be up 2-1 in this series. Any way these are some pretty even teams going at it. This series could have gone either way, but you guys will finish it off in the third. I am still happy for the way the Sharks played. They didn't get steamrolled they just got beat by a team that got it done when it matter.

I agree. This series could easily have been 2-1 SJ.

I just hope the Hawks can pull this one out.

But that's after the fact. If I told before the 2006 playoffs began that Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final would come down to Ward vs Markkanen, you'd think I was insane. Neither was a starter to begin the postseason. Without a doubt the worst regular season numbers you'll ever see for goalies that reach the Final.

BTW, a quick aside to laugh at the Russians for losing the gold medal game to a half-strength Czech team at the World Championships. Maybe they should try sending their full Olympic team to the World Juniors next year, try their luck there.

Make no mistake about it you guys are getting it done and that is what make you guys so good. The Sharks did that in the Wings series. Any way it was a fun to watch, both teams really doing a good job of stopping the other team and the Sharks have done a good job of slowing down the Hawks and the Hawks have done a good job of stopping the Sharks for getting to the rebounds and second chances.

He is only overrated because some anoint him as a top flight D-Man already...

But his talent is not overrated. He's much better on D than people thought as was seen in his AHL games and he is an offensive marvel. He tries to do too much though...

All this to say, he is definitely not another Mike Green. Green is a below AHL type defender..

True. I just don't remember a time where, going into a Cup Finals, we've had goalies who haven't really been "on fire" or established themselves. Leighton has been a journeyman and Niemi is an unknown rookie. There does tend to be one or two "unknowns" that begin to establish themselves during the Playoffs like Halak, Hiller or Ward but Niemi hasn't done that.

I guess this is the reality of the new NHL. You don't really need a top level goalie to carry you to a Cup any more.
