I do not agree with this at all. Kunitz's elbow on Gagne was probably the most obvious, blatant attempt to injure I've seen yet. At least most other elbows are concealed a bit, tucked in. That was a flying elbow at its finest and dirtiest. If you ask me, Kunitz should've gotten at least the whole series, if not the whole playoffs for that. That's EXACTLY what they're trying to get rid of, that stupid, completely unnecessary hit to the head BS. There was absolutely no grey area in that hit.

Looks like Richards was trying to absorb and also dish out a little on Kaleta since he saw him coming. It wasn't a blindside hit, just seemed like an old fashioned regular elbowing penalty.

Didn't see what Richards said to the media, but I believe he had a case in receiving a 5 minute major to whining to the ref during the game. I don't think he would've cried about a 2 or even a 4 (well, some crying for a 4 ), but a 5 minute major. That's a quarter of a period completely wiped out of any offense, not to mention huge stress on the PK.

Richards does have a reputation for chirping so I can't defend that but I just believe he should be a little pissed he got a 5 minute major when it should've just been a single or double minor.

he seen him coming, EXTENDED his elbow into the face of Kaleta.. an extended elbow is an extended elbow, just what the league is trying to get rid of. no matter if you are skating towards a guy (like Kunitz) or standing still (like Richards)..

it was an elbow, it was a head shot, it should be at the least just 1 game (but it wont get anything)..

with all that said, again, the NHL needs to get rid of these hard shelled elbow pads and shoulder pads..

A-ha; thanks for the clarification - I had no idea that was the rule. I only ever saw that come up one other time that I remember, and it was in a game I actually went to a long time ago (so I didn't have the benefit of an announcer to school me at that time), but both times the players scored so that auto-goal rule never came up. Seems like a reasonable rule, though. Kind of makes me wonder what the play was that led to that being the rule, though - maybe something like the "auto-touchdown" in football if someone from the sidelines tackles a ballcarrier, as a direct result of the 1954 Cotton Bowl (just fast-forward to 37 seconds if you wanna see it - still makes me laugh every time):

You need to be able to spend money on FA (like Colorado) or at least be astute in your drafting (like Nashville). You also need a decent arena that's easily accessible. Oops.
Yeah, well....when you're right, you're right. It coulda worked, though, under the circumstances you outlined. I don't think the idea was bad in theory, just the execution.

NHL needs to give the refs some specific instructions this off-season...they're not being consistent or too scared to make certain calls...Doesn't help that the main ref yesterday was a rookie- I thought they had their best refs going for the playoffs...

Certain players are targeted more because of previous incidents...Carcillo got mauled by a couple Sabres yesterday and there were no extra calls...Kaleta is of the same mold.

Game 2 was a complete penalty nightmare...

A couple nice shifts at the end of the period for the Bruins to get it back to even. They better keep it up in the 3rd because Montreal is skating well and getting great scoring chances. Can't rely on Thomas to make like a hundred saves.

Talk about grinding it out. Tis a whole new series now. Hopefully Boston can pretend TD Bank is a different arena since they generally suck at home.
