Canucks have locked up Cory Schneider.

    Mike Gillis ‏<s>@</s>GMMikeGillis

We have agreed in principle to a deal with Cory Schneider. More news in the next few days.
EDIT: 3 year deal worth 12M (4M cap hit) according to Kypreos.

I suppose. Sounds like Florida is now the frontrunner, which makes sense for Luongo but not for the Panthers. In a year or two, Lui/Markstrom would most likely become Lui/Schneider II. Absurd as it seems, perhaps Florida is considering this because of salary floor concerns?

I think if Burke is smart, he'll unload a crappy contract to Florida to keep them out of the running. They aren't giving up any top prospects, though. I think the Leafs will end up with him, somehow, although this isn't going to be quick, pretty, or without a barn-fight.

I just don't like long-term contracts in general. I suppose Pittsburgh had no choice, as they have the modern-day Gretzky on their team, but it's a big commitment for a guy who really hasn't been able to stay healthy (and doesn't have the kind of injury problems that just go away with rest, necessarily). But LA with Quick...I'm just against signing a guy for that long in principle. It rarely works out well.

The next CBA needs to have a 5 year max limit on goalie contracts to save these teams from themselves (see: Luongo, Roberto and Bryzgalov, Ilya).

              I'm sort of serious.

Florida does make sense for Luongo, but as Dr. Jones said, not Florida. The Panthers have Markstrom in the pipe. Maybe Florida thinks they can win right now? And Luongo is that final piece?

They would be vastly overrating themselves if they think that.

Florida has a trend of having a good year here and there before falling back to their usual spot in the basement. Was the case when they had Luongo before.

i wouldn't mind this at all.

something like what the NBA does..

if you are going to be a UFA, you can sign a 7 year max deal with the team that drafted you, or sign just a 5 year deal with a new team.

Well, if the cap keeps going up, all these long term deals will look like steals. Kovalchuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Hossa, Quick, Keith; these area all gonna be great contracts to have.

Franzen has a contact until 2020...how is it a steal? Beside he scores half of his goals against the Avs so his goal stats are misleading

I'm 100% serious in my agreement with that. I know it's a philosophical argument whether teams should be "saved from themselves" or not, but the fact of the matter is that sports leagues are unlike other analagous (ostensibly "free") markets because the participants (owners) are asked to be stewards/custodians for overall league health, yet also compete against one another for extremely limited commodities (players). It would be like if Ben Bernanke were not only the Fed chairman, but also the CEO of JP Morgan...(I know, no jokes please).

The end result is something where you have really competitive individuals who are competing in a market where talent supply is limited, and the rules are such that acquisition of said talent fundamentally changes the market for everyone else. One major decision by one owner/team can alter the pricing structure for everyone else in outsized ways, especially since the NHL is the only league with a hard cap but guaranteed contracts. The insane long-term contracts are basically a way to skirt the salary cap, which is the public reason the NHL should move to limit them. But the private reason is that the owners need to be "saved from themselves"....

How bout GMs just don't give these goalies 10year contracts? Is that a crazy idea? If a GM is dumb enough to give ridiculous contracts, let them be.

Agreed. The only thing I'd like to see is to get rid of frontloading contracts. Player salaries should be amoritized as well as cap hit. That would effectively get rid of teams offering ten-year deals to nobodies (Islanders excepted, of course).
