    Exactly.

First, don't think for a second that this hire doesn't have anything to do with the multi-million dollar lawsuit the NHL is facing concerning head trauma and the league's reluctance to protect its players.

Hiring Parros has several implications in this regard.
Its like David Duke hiring a minority to mow his lawn in order to prove he's not racist.

And let's be honest, the DoPS is nothing but a shell game. The figure-head of this department still answers to the "Hawks" (not Blackhawks - speaking about the Hawks that run the BoG and the Doves that listen to them).
Just look at what happened when Shanahan tried to clean things up. He was handing out 10 game suspensions like Pez.
But eventually he was shut-up, and shot-down before preseason was completed.
Now it's status quo. As long the National media doesn't notice the infraction, it's 2 games no matter the what. If it's really bad and the media makes note of it, then it's 4 games.
Star players - the ones that drive the league - continue to be assaulted on a nightly basis without any recourse.

As Ken said, the NHL is the only pro sports league in North America that willingly hands the keys to the kingdom to former scrubs and plumbers of the league.
It has allowed the coaches (most of whom were galaxies away from playing in the NHL) to decide that games should be won in as boring fashion as possible.
Your creativity is not welcome here, son!
The DoPS is as interested in player safety as Mike Babcock is in fun hockey.
    Hmm..., coincidence?
High-ranking National Hockey League executives have been subpoenaed to testify in former NHL enforcer Mike Peluso’s upcoming workers’ compensation trial, TSN Senior Correspondent Rick Westhead reports.

Why does Gary Bettman shake when he talks? Like his head shakes back and forth almost as if his body subconsciously reacts the way we all do when he speaks.

He's such a strange little man.

Two interesting ones I saw online. NHL version of the "you have $___ to spend on a lineup". One is an all-time edition, the other is 2017.
        Spoiler

        Spoiler

        All-time I'd go:
        Ovechkin-McDavid-Howe
        Chelios-Karlsson
        Price

        2017 I'd go:
        Ovechkin-Matthews-Laine
        Subban-Doughty
        Murray

All time, gimme (in the order I picked them in my head):

          RW - Mike Bossy - $2
          C Mario Lemieux - $4
          G Carey Price - $1
          D Scott Neidermayer - $3
          D Scott Stevens - $3
          RW - Jamie Benn - $2

Thoughts: why is Jamie Benn an option? I only picked him because I had $2 to spend at the end, which is why the list is in seemingly random order... I instantly was gonna go for Gretzky/Kurri but have been on a weird Bossy thing lately, dude put up insane numbers, so I went there and complemented him with Super Mario... Honestly, I'd take Price at goalie over the two guys listed ahead of him so this was a value pick... Neidermayer/Stevens is just too obvious. Defense was tough to pick a pairing within my budget.

          NFL - Buffalo Bills
          MLB - Cincinnati Reds

So Maurice Richard was just credited with one more career assist.

It's not as if any great injustice was done, but Montreal Canadiens legend Maurice Rocket Richard getting an assist added to his prodigious NHL scoring totals.

Apparently nbc will be blacking out all games during the Olympics. Basically they're not happy with the NHL not going to Olympics which airs on... Nbc.

I'm in favour of nhlers at Olympics, but I'm also on the side of not watching a single game because I'm not waking up 5am to watch, and will have results spoiled during day if I Dvr the game. Would've been nicer if world cup worked out and became as prestigious as Olympic hockey. The lack of videos of nhl guys at Olympics sucks. I wanna rewatch the 02 and 10 gold medal games on tv because they are 2 of my fave games ever, but thanks to the ioc, not even the NHL is allowed to have highlights or show the game.

This among other issues are all gonna lead to next lockout. Nbc and NHLPA gonna pressure them for 2022 Olympics , owners have their own agenda and priorities. Not to mention the other various issues within the league like the cap, rules, struggling franchises, next USA TV deal.

They're not blacking out anything nor can they truly "black out" games.

There were no games scheduled to air during those days because of the Olympics and games as scheduled with local affiliates will be aired as scheduled.

Writers with agendas are calling it a blackout. A blackout would mean no one could watch because NBC had the rights to the games nationally and then decided not to air it which isn't the case since they had none scheduled.

Anyone see the TSN "Dan and Jay" segment on Paul Kariya?
                  Pretty good little documentary.
He said he doesn't remember anything about the Stevens hit or the GWG he scored on the same night.
In fact, he says he doesn't remember anything from the day before or 2 days after the hit.

They speak about how damaged his brain was following his last concussion:

(anyone else remember what a giant piece of crap Patrick Kaleta was. How many guys he cheapshotted before the league finally did something about him?
BTW, he didn't receive any punishment for the Kariya elbow to the head)

Kariya is still angered by the last hit that took his career away from him.
Even looking at the Suter crosscheck (which was 2 games?), it was brutal back then.

He was asked if he would be opposed to working in the DoPS and he said he would but he's never received a call from the NHL.
Brendan Shanahan was interviewed and he said that due to Kariya's intelligence and straight-forward honesty, he'd be an asset to the league.

And I think that's why a guy like Kariya would never be asked to partake in the DoPS.
He'd be laying down the hammer on all the morons in the league without batting an eye.
But the BoG's, coaches and GM's would hate him because violators would be getting more than 2 games for dangerous hits and infractions.
And the league simply wants nothing to do with that.

                    NHL Off-Topic thread

And when this concussion stuff hits the fan harder then it already has, they’re gonna be caught with their pants down. Typical NHL posture.

The NFL and how they’ve handled concussions throughout history is an ugly timeline. The only reason the NHL hasn’t been nailed just as hard if not harder is because it doesn’t have the eyeballs that the NFL does. Maybe the NHL hasn’t gone out of its way to silence or discredit people as much as the NFL has, but they’ve turned a blind eye for just as long. All these safety measures are flat out bull****, can we just come out and say that? If the game is important enough, the player always comes back.

I love sports, I love hockey. But I can’t say I don’t enjoy when they squirm a little. Eventually, they’re gonna be squirming right through their pockets when they get slapped with millions of dollars worth of lawsuits because their history shows how negligent they’ve been in handling these injuries. They’ll point to new, safer rules but it’s meaningless when they aren’t enforced because the weight of a game weighs heavier then the health of a player.

Kariya wasn’t the first to not remember full on days and epic moments of playing time after the fact, and he won’t be the last.

                      Dave Strader passed away today.
I grew up listening to Dave call Wings games. From all accounts, he was a great man away from the mic as well.

Rest in peace Mr.Strader. My prayers go out to his friends and family.

Sad to hear that. Also have very fond memories of Mickey and Dave calling the Wings games on Channel 50 in Detroit. RIP.

I didn’t realize until maybe this year that I loved Strader as a PBP guy. He would do games on ESPN, in absence of Gary Thorne or Steve Levy.

Loved the Stars tribute to him last season.

Lost a good one in the booth.

In unsurprising news, Hossa and Lupul got checked out by other doctors as per request of the NHL and have both been deemed unable to play. Both will go back on the LTIR. So much for Leafs cheating, right Lupul?

This now confirms leafs will have about 5-6m in cap space to play with this season. Wouldn't surprise me if we see something in future like Leivo for a 1 year salary dump and higher round pick.

Leafs know what they're doing. Don't see as big an issue as media is making out this "how can they afford their big 3 long term?". 25m for all 3 I think is more than enough. With current cap space they can already afford Nylander increase. First year of Matthews and Marners new deal might be tricky, but after that, Marleau and Martin expires and that's almost 9M. Not to mention with next lockout, cap could be much diff, if one even exists.

If they get rid of cap in next lockout, Mcdavids deal suddenly becomes one of best values in NHL history.
