    Re: NHL Off-Topic thread

Just watched the Canada-Russia 05 WJC gold medal game from the US.

Seeing the American players and fans badly wanting Canada to win after Russia destroyed the US in the semis was weird.

And this being Canadas first gold in almost a decade at this tourney, and just 3 years after their first gold at the Olympics in forever, it felt so good. Obviously a super team at this tournament with Crosby, Bergeron, Carter, Phaneuf and so many more, but Russia was led by Malkin and Ovechkin. This was the best thing to happen during the lockout.

Wasn't just an "Of course Canada wins" game. Fans treated this one so much more special because of how rare winning had become, especially against Russia.

Pretty fun looking back at those rosters.

      Canada was so stacked.

A lot of the Russian guys just never panned out. Ovechkin and Malkin were obviously great. Radulov didn't have a particularly notable tournament, but after him there's not much for later success at all.

The University of Michigan had a strong representation for the US. But Hensick, Porter, and Montoya never took that next step. But Kessel, Callahan, Suter, Goligoski, Schneider, and Stafford all had high degrees of success.

Olesz for the Czech Republic had an awesome tournament after being a top 10 pick but again never materialized.

Tuukka Rask for Finland, David Krejci for Czech Republic, Thomas Greiss for Germany, Kostitsyn brothers for Belarus are also notables.

That canadian team had a lot of all stars in it...

        Sweden had Loui Eriksson.

While not stars, the Czechs had 3 others who have had long NHL careers - Roman Polak, Ladislav Smid, and Michael Frolik

Nassau Coliseum is shutting down, so whenever they do play home games next, Islanders will have to go back to Barclays for the time being.

So that's basically the entire 20-21 season and MAYBE start of 2021-22 season at worst.

His cap expertise didn't translate well into a GM. Wouldn't be stunned if the Pens brought him back in that same role he had before.

Whoever takes over Sabres will have lots of room to do things.

Almost 40m in cap space with 3F, 5D, 1G signed. And room needs to be left for the Dahlin extension next year.

If I'm them I'd take a step back. They're not catching Bruins or Tampa on top their division.

Okposo is one name I'd expect they move. Johansson could also go if a team offers more for a season of him over a half season deadline move.

Poor Sabres fans. This is their fourth GM heading up this rebuild.

I don't think they can move Okposo unless they kick in an asset, and a pretty significant one at that. While there are some good pieces on the roster, trying to "fix" a rebuild is a tough ask for any new GM.

Speaking of poor Sabres fans...today is anniversary of "skate in crease".

Uncommon opinion, I like the foot in crease rule. In international hockey it works fine. With video review nowadays, I think they should just have that over goalie interference reviews. If contact is made with a goalie but the skater isnt in the crease, it's fair game. If the skater is in the crease, regardless if he's making contact with the goalie or not, goal won't stand.

EGAD. Don't say that, even in jest. Maj, I don't know if you're old enough to have actually watched the NHL on a regular basis in the late '90s, but I am. The skate-in-crease rule was a ******* nightmare. It was worse than puck-over-glass, loser points, shootouts, offside reviews, the trap, and Brad Marchand combined. Just no.

                            HHOF announcements made.

Ken Holland goes in for builder. Doug Wilson, Kevin Lowe, Kim St-Pierre also gets in.

We also saw former Penguins Jarome Iginla and Marian Hossa get in.

O ya, I guess former Flame Iginla and Blackhawk Hossa was better though.

Still funny how we had Pens vs Wings in back to back years, Hossa lost with the Pens to the Wings, went to the Wings and lost to the Pens.

And Hossa is the 3rd Thrasher to get in. Chelios and Recchi the others. Now that's a fun trivia question.
