I didn't even know they can waive the NMC but can't see why anyone would.

Yeah, unless you're in a really toxic situation, I don't know why anyone would waive a NMC to go to an expansion team.University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey

Re: NHL 2016 Off-Season Thread
The expansion draft definitely will be leading to some big trades. Hawks for example, already got 3D spots locked up,so those guys are for sure being unprotected. Jackets got too many NMC on forward to utilize the 8 skater option to protect 4+ defencemen,so guys like Savard/Prout are likely gonna be available.
I'm more worried about losing him than those 3, not to say it wouldn't hurt, I like Gustafsson and think he has some solid upside, TVR is a bottom pairing guy who looked over exposed on the top 4, and Svedberg has size but I would need to see more from him on the ice before I lost any sleep about losing him.Favorite Teams:
NCAA- University of Illinois Fighting Illini
NFL- Cleveland Browns
MLB- St. Louis Cardinals
NBA- Boston Celtics
NHL- Chicago Blackhawks

Re: NHL 2016 Off-Season Thread
Yeah I'm more concerned with how the NHL defines the 2+ years of pro experience, like will Chicago have to worry about say Ville Pokka being taken? He was in the AHL last season and will be again this year or on the NHL roster one or the other.

Pokka does need protection. Played in ahl in 14-15/15-16 so 16-17 will be pro year 3.Comment

Re: NHL 2016 Off-Season Thread
Forgot he came over in 14-15, yeah that one would sting, guess I wouldn't be shocked to see him traded in that case, definitely don't want to lose him for nothing.
Although not sure what kind of value he would have so kind of a tough spot.Last edited by IlliniM1ke; 06-26-2016, 07:11 PM.Favorite Teams:

Re: NHL 2016 Off-Season Thread
Reading more and more about Stamkos wanting a guarantee that he'll be a centre and not wing.
Larry Brooks reported that more than one coach has told him that they feel he's a better winger than centre.
I still believe Toronto and Detroit are the front-runners.
I think Illitch has told Holland to throw the max at Stammer in order to help fill the new arena.Comment

Re: NHL 2016 Off-Season Thread
I'm sure Rogers will probably push Leafs more to get Stamkos. HNIC did horrible ratings, and major changes being made throughout Rogers because of it. Leafs being the main ratings team. It'll already be higher with Matthews, Marner, Nylander here, but Stamkos would put up unreal TV numbers.
Even if it costs them slightly more for him, I still think the impact he'll make in merchandise sales, sponsorships, and TV ratings will be more than enough to justify the money difference between them and next highest team.
Don't see how he wouldn't be a C on this team right now. He goes into #1 C role while Matthews gets shielded lower down in depth chart until he's really ready.Comment

I think Stamkos would do very well in Toronto's lineup as well.
The only reservation I have is I believe Nylander is a true #2 centreman. You're not going to make Kadri a 4th line centre so Nylander has to shift to the wing. Maybe that's not a bad thing? But he looked really good at the end of last season as a centre.
Also, would the Leafs be better off building up their backend? Perhaps dealing for Fowler and signing Shattenkirk?Comment

As good as Matthews might be, if they have Stamkos, I'd have Matthews as 2nd line C. Less pressure, and he can move to 1st line when Stamkos is in his 30s(Matthews will be nearing mid 20s by then. A good age to be bumped to top C).
Shattenkirk still under contract, but Leafs got so many tradable guys, they should be able to pull off something for a top 4 dman.
My ideal team in a year:
JVR-Stamkos-Marner
Komarov-Matthews-Nylander
Kapanen-Kadri-Soshnikov
Rychel-Holland-(AHL)
Rielly-(UFA or Trade)
Gardiner-Zaitsev
(AHL)-(AHL)
Andersen

Re: NHL 2016 Off-Season Thread
I wonder if he'd be game for returning to Anaheim.
Apparently the Ducks want to go the Pittsburgh/Chicago route of having their three best offensive players all on separate lines.
They're looking for a winger to play with Getzlaf.
Also, totally agree with the Matthews assessment. I think having him as a 2nd line centre is a great way to keep the pressure off of him.Comment

LOL, I see Lupul isn't in your plans either, eh?

Lupul,Bozak,Bernier are my main hopes to be dealt in this off season. Others like Laich,Michalek,Greening,Hunwick either gone at deadline,or let contracts expire.
I'd rather straight up deal those 3 for picks. Use those picks + prospects and try to get a dman.
The team I proposed would have lots of cap room and would be competitive, playoff contenders for sure.Last edited by Majingir; 06-27-2016, 01:01 PM.Comment

Paying your 3rd C over 6m per year. That's such a Peter Chiarelli move it hurts.

Re: NHL 2016 Off-Season Thread
Kadri gets 4.5m per year. And majority of that deal, Matthews is on an ELC, so it's justified. Not to mention the cap will be going up.
The Hawks got 40m+ spent on their top 3 forward lines alone. Leafs under that scenario would have their top 3 forward line be under 30m. So not outrageous compared to others.Comment
