Don't get the demand for Stamkos to Leafs right now. Reilly is going to need another contract in a couple years, Matthews, Marner, Nylander will need long-terms or bridge deals. Leafs could also use another top 8 draft pick defenceman.

Meanwhile, I don't know what Tampa does when all those players need new deals.

I'm sure there will be some regret, just depends on what exactly happens from here on out. Bishop will probably be out soon, with Vasilevsky apparently ready. Could be a lot worse then $8.5M a year

I did say i'd like to see Stamkos here but really, I appreciate what the Leafs are doing building a young core together and with these young guys getting acclimated to playing in probably the most demanding market in the NHL they will probably resign when their time comes up. The Leafs are going to be a really good team in 5 years at the most IMO.

I was in a camp that wanted Stamkos only for less than 9M. Yet still at the moment my TSN app pushed its notification of his re-signing with Tampa I felt a little bit sad.

But yeah, Leafs now can stay on course and have longer window. They have to be smart and draft well, but the future is bright.

And where Canadian teams thinking today? Old boys thinking that you are only good defensemen if you hit? I mean, Shea Weber is one of my favourite players in NHL, but he wasn't that good last season. He might improve next season, but he is also big gamble because of his contract.

And Edmonton traded wrong guy, they should have tried and traded RNH and added some pieces, because Hall is good player. Larrson is not bad, he can handle tough situations, but he will need some help.

Still digesting everything that happened today. As bad as I think the Hall trade was, I still can't believe Montreal traded Subban.

Weber is a great player, but Subban is a lightning rod, just not a player that you trade away.

Wow Montreal. If his donation was really a sticking point for you to get rid of him, shame on you. A guy gives 10 million dollars away and that's somehow twisted in to a bad thing?!

I mean, I get the trade based on the clear differences in the players. But when you have a talent like Subban, you build around him. He's an offensive defensemen, so you surround him with defensively responsible forwards or defensive defensemen. Instead they wanted to fit his round peg in to their square hole.

I'm so sick of coaches taking players who have special talents, even more so then the average pro, and neutering them by forcing them in to systems they're incompatible with. Montreal knew what Subban was! They signed him to a large contract extension. Yet they're getting rid of him because their retread coach didn't like the way he played? It's just amazing to me that they'd rather side with a coach that is entirely replaceable then hang on to their rare talent.

With that said, Weber ain't chopped liver. This guy has been a top 3 defensemen over the last few years. But wrapping up so much money in a guy who is 30 and plays a very physical game seems foolish. But it's exactly what they wanted. Congrats.

I'm not sure this is true.

                    Doughty
                    Karlsson
                    Subban
                    Keith
                    Suter

I'm sure I'm missing some others. Great player? Sure. But he hit the wall hard this year, and wasn't even the best or second best defenseman on his own team.

I'm not shocked at all. We heard the rumors before the draft that the Habs were listening on Subban. You don't even take calls on a player like that unless you are seriously considering moving him.

I agree with everything except the Weber part. I agree with Psy on that. Not even the top defenseman on his team.

Josi has definitely been the better overall defenseman in that pairing with Weber for the past two seasons. But Weber has also been playing through a bunch of nagging injuries in that time. If he stays healthy (and that's a pretty big "if"), I'd say Weber has maybe three or four seasons left as a top pair defenseman, at most.

And I can't see Weber finishing out his contract (it ends in 2026) with as many minutes as he's logged in his career. He has a lot more mileage on him compared to your average 30 year old hockey player due to his play style and his high usage.

Yea this hospital is looking more and more like the reason for Subban getting shipped off.
He didn't even get nominated for King Clancy award for charity or the Habs foundation award for community work.
