    Re: NHL 2016 Off-Season Thread

It's fun watching free agency from the outside looking in, knowing your team has no business entering the FA market. So instead of either paying alot for someone, or being like "we missed out on ___"(minus stamkos, but even then, wasn't about money), can just focus on the whole rebuild, knowing there's a group of good young talent on Leafs roster who won't be costing 7-9M per year anytime soon.

The Matt Martin signing though, obviously a depth move. Imagine Martin and Komarov on same line. It'd be the old NHL Hitz video game all over again.

But Martin obviously gonna be on NHL roster, so I really wonder when we might see some kind of trade happen for Leafs. 14 forwards(all but 3(Marner,Nylander,Rychel) are guaranteed to be on NHL roster, unless injured or traded). So would think at least 1 forward gets dealt.

If the Avs trade Barrie to the Oilers, I hope they target Draisaitl

Yeah, that would be my only target in your place. RNH is good player, but he was rushed and that caused that he will not become as good as he could be. But Draisaitl would do wonders for your forwards, he would be great deal.

Still don't know why are Avs trying to trade Barrie?

            Re: NHL 2016 Off-Season Thread

Miller- He was dreadful last season. Before we added a bunch of forwards, he would have been fine in the press box, but now I fear he'll squeeze someone out.

Helm- 500K more than I wanted but I was fine with this until we added more players.

Nielsen- Nielsen has been one of my favorite players the last 5 or so seasons. However, he's 32 and the term of the contract is too long.

            Vanek- I like this signing.

Ott- How Ott got less money than Miller is beyond me. He's better and more versatile than Miller at this point.

It could be worse, we could have overpaid for Backes, Ladd, Brouwer, Boedker or Lucic. Detroit has too many forwards now, my guess is a trade for a D is coming. If they do venture back into FA for a D, please stay away from Russell. No reunions with Brad Stuart or Kyle Quincey either.

I would have done it differently. Hamhuis' contract is great and would have been a nice fit. Buyout Ericsson, sign Hamhuis and call up Oulette and the D is improved. For forwards, there was really no problem with:

            Abby-Z-Tatar
            Mantha-Larkin-Nyquist
            Jurco/AA-Sheahan-Pulkkinen

Then just make the fourth line not suck. We're stuck with Glendening, but Michael Latta, Viktor Stalberg, and Patrick Eaves would have been good adds.

Sounds like the Oilers refused to deal Draisatl and their 4th for Subban so I wonder if they'd be willing to move him for Barrie.
But after seeing them deal Hall for Larsson, anything's possible.

I'm guessing there isn't a market for RNH. He's made of glass, is probably a 60-point centre and his contract is ridiculous.
Both he and Eberle are nearly unmoveable.
RNH could be the most overpaid 3rd line centre in the league outside of Kesler.

I think Backes is going to be a RW moving forward.
Hitch moved him there mid-way through this past season and he was more effective on the wing. Backes even said he liked it there better too.

I think he'll look good lined up with either Bergeron or Krejci.

Brian Campbell back to Chicago on a 1 year 2 million dollar deal. He took a huge pay cut to come back. At least Chicago is back to having 4 dmen now.

Here's a Montreal fan who returned her Subban jersey with a message to the front office.

Well I would not call RNH a 3rd line C. He is 2nd line C at the moment, both in possession stats and also in his production. I agree that his health is a big question, but in past 3 seasons, only this year he missed more than 6 games. 2 years ago he played 80 and 1 year ago he played 76. He might not become 1st line C, but I believe that he will stay at least 2nd line C for the time of his contract.

But I agree, he is not what he is paid for. He is slightly overpaid as 2nd line C, that is probably making it much more difficult to trade him. He is still young and there might be a team that needs a guy like him. I still believe that Minnesota would be great destination for him. They could use him as primary offensive C and keep Koivu taking hard-matchups. But they took Staal, who I believe they will use it that way, so it just seems that RNH will stay in Edmonton.

Which team has a lack of offensively gifted C and has too many defensemen?

I agree but he has been saying in all of his interviews he is saying he's going to be the 3rd center behind Krejci and Bergy. So we would have a 3 headed monster down the middle. But he did mention that in tight times he would move to the RW and have a line of Marschmont-Bergy-Backes.

Read that too. It makes me wonder if they're going to trade Krejci as Spooner needs to play 3rd line minutes.
If not, then I can see Backes moving from C to RW depending on the game and situation.
It's a nice problem for Boston to have.
I was hoping the Wings had a shot of signing him, but Detroit is no longer an attractive landing spot for FA's.
We have to overpay for mediocre talent to come here.
Might have something to do with the fact that the Wings primary goal each year is to simply make the playoffs so this ridiculous postseason streak continues.
It's like a large brick tied to the wings neck while they attempt to tread water.
I'd much prefer they let the kids play and deal with the warts that follow.

Yea we got the same thing here. Try to make the playoffs every year. Yet we failed back to back years, when we were in with 10 games left, and our coach is still here. We should've sold off the past 2 years (looking at Soderberg and Eriksson). Both would've fetched decent returns.

Lol, Leafs sign Polak. Literally 5-6 months ago, they dealt him for two 2nds.

What a nice deal. Two 2nds for a rental they get back.

Crowded D for Leafs. It's more of a "quantity over quality" situation unfortunately, but hope they can package some D prospects + NHL forwards for a top 4 RHD
