Kovalchuk heading back to the KHL. Who knows if he returns to the NHL again, probably not, unless it's a 1 year vet min deal to end his career, which I dont see happening.

Almost forgot he was with Washington, and even Montreal. He played more games in playoffs for the Caps than he did in the regular season.

He probably waited for too long to get back over to the NHL. I don't think he'll get another shot now.

Ottawa makes a pair of deals. First they pick up Stepan from Arizona for a 2nd. Then they add Paquette, Coburn and a 2nd from Tampa for a pair of LTIR'ers in Gaborik and Nilsson.

Stepan is interesting, as he has a cap hit of 6.5 M but only being paid 2 M after Arizona has paid his signing bonus of 3 M. Between him and Gudbrandson, that's 10.5 M of cap hit but only 5 M in salary. If you're Eugene Melnyk, you love to see it.

Ottawa isn't going to be good this year, but they will be better that last.

Those were good moves for the Sens. Surprised a team is willing to take on a LTIR contract during a time like this.

North division making more moves. Habs signed Perry. His career really fell off. Went from being a 70-80 point guy, then dropped to a 50-60 point guy and now to a 20-30 point guy. We'll see if he bounces back or not, if not, maybe his career could be winding down, he is 35 afterall.

And that'll make people feel older too. A top guy who made his debut after the 04/05 lockout retiring. That 03 draft was stacked, and now we're getting to the point where those guys are making the final stop(s) before retirement with Staal in Buffalo, Perry in Montreal, Fleury still in Vegas for now(but could still be moved)

More bad news league wide, Toews is out indefinitely for medical reasons. No further info on what it is.

Wasn't expecting Chara to the Caps.

Too bad Lundqvist won't be able to play. Would've been one of those weird jersey photo moments seeing Chara and Lundqvist on the same team, in a Caps jersey. Like Luc Robitaille and Brett Hull together in Detroit or Brian Leetch, Ron Francis, Joe Nieuwendyk, Owen Nolan together in Toronto.

Ah good times. Back in 03-04, Detroit had the largest payroll with 77 M, just eking out the Rags at 76 M. The next closest teams were Dallas and Philly with 68 M followed by Colorado at 63 M and Toronto and St. Louis at 62 M. 16 years later, this 77 M is higher than 8 teams on Capfriendly as of right now, including Detroit themselves.

I always felt the 05/06 season was so unfair.

You had many teams who constructed their roster according to the 04 rules, and suddenly had an immediate hard cap for the 05/06 season which was like 40m or something I believe?

Many of those teams used that as impetus to go into a rebuild (St. Louis) or at least overhaul the roster (Detroit, Rangers, Philly). It ended up the worst for the teams that tried to keep it together built around an aging star a la Toronto, Dallas and Colorado with Sundin, Modano and Sakic respectively.

Yeah Torontos problem for many years was that Sundin was too good. Didn't matter how much the team sucked they would always be close to the playoffs and never get low picks. Sundin would have been much bigger legend had he played for any actual good teams with good linemates. His best line he played on in the NHL was Kamensky and Nolan in Quebec when he had 114 pts. In Toronto it was with ageing had beens like Gary Roberts or a fadeing Mogilny. Or even worse when they overpaid Jason Blake after his one 40 goal season in the Islanders...

                          Another goalie out.

Corey Crawford won't be with the Devils due to personal reasons.

                          Edit-He's announced his retirement.

He put NJ in a tough spot there...

Wonder what happened, did he realize he wouldn't be their number one?
Or was it something else, personal behind the decision?

He was listed as away due to personal reasons. I don't think it would be something like that. Had to be something serious.

He was scheduled to make 3.9m aav each of next 2 years. I doubt he's retiring due to something as petty as winding up a backup.

                                Big day for waiver wire.

Perry,Eriksson,Tyler Johnson,Ladd,Derek Ryan among the names on waivers.

Johnson has 4 years at 5m left on his deal. He's a .5ppg guy right now.

Not the greatest of contracts, but far from the worst. Seattle definitely should have interest, too bad for them they cant claim him on waivers. If you have the space for him, I'd take him. Worst case, leave him unprotected in the draft and let Seattle take him.
