Re: The Official NHL 2020-2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread

I think my biggest criticism of Dubas is the total eschewing of bridge deals. I can understand the Oilers going top-heavy because they have no choice - no decent FA is ever going to sign with Edmonton - but did Dubas really have to give Matthews and Marner top-5 salaries right out of the gate? If I'm reading this right, Matthews' 11.6M salary only bought one year of UFA. I understand that he was banking on the salary cap going up, but if your team is THIS top-heavy, they absolutely have to produce, no?

Still better than Twins vs Reds.

Anyway, since the NHL can be late starting the 2nd round, I can be late with my 2nd round picks:

      Jets over Canadiens in 5
      Lightning over Hurricanes in 6
      Bruins over Islanders in 6
Avalanche over Golden Knights in 7

Best of luck to the Habs/Jets winner, LOL.

Please be Avs or Vegas vs Lightning in the finals. I'm already taking a break from hockey for the next month+, but at least that finals would have me interested.

I gotta admit, the Leafs, Canucks, and Sabres all put on a hell of a display this season to reach the pinnacle of my NHL's Most Cursed Franchise rankings. This is a peak Fed/Rafa/Djoker clash of the titans to be declared WOAT - it's too close to call!

Sabres did the same thing with Eichel too. It's like they're following the trend without actually understanding why it's good. The idea is by paying studs more during their lean RFA years, you get a discount on UFA years. However, these contracts are the worst of both worlds, where they're paying them more now and paying market value for their UFA years. Banking on the cap going up is a terrible idea, just ask Chicago how that worked out for them with Kane and Toews.

This is what I'm hoping for too.
If Montreal gets to the Finals, it'll be a hard pass as I know the hockey will be extremely boring.

It’s really gotta be Toronto for right now. Buffalo hasn’t been good enough to experience true heartbreak lately (though they’ve had their share in the past), though I recognize being awful is a different, fun way of being cursed. Vancouver had a good run losing to Chicago but they broke that even if they haven’t broken the championship curse. It feels half broken... but I’m not a VAN fan either.

                  Its 1000% the Leafs.

Don't even know how that can be a discussion.

Buffalo as a sports city is more cursed than Toronto, Cleveland up there too, but the Leafs win overall cursed.

In all 5 playoff appearances with this group, 0 has featured a full roster for most of the series.

Between Polak being hurt, Kadri being suspended, Kadri being suspended, Muzzin hurt, Tavares hurt, Foligno hurt, Muzzin hurt, they've always dealt with a major loss.

They've literally had back to back playoffs where one of their top guys was taken away on a stretcher. If that isn't the major proof of a curse, don't know what else is.

Is it weird that less than 24 hours after the game I don't feel bad?

I guess 5 years of this has made me get over it fairly quickly.

I've moved on and can basically laugh about it less than a day later. At this point its basically expected. Maybe because its June and I've never seen June Leafs hockey, so it doesn't feel weird they're not playing anymore?

This may very well be the worst season in both Sabres and Canucks history, so it's a tough sell if you want to tell me either has lost ground to the Leafs here. The Canucks are in salary cap hell, will be in worse cap hell next season, were the worst team in the God-awful North Division, and nobody lost their job. Oh, and they let Toffoli walk so they could re-sign a rapist who got 5 points in 38 games. Would Maj or any other Leafs fan want Aquilini and Benning having anything to do with their team? Buffalo, on the other hand, is the worst franchise in the NHL, bar none. Leafs and Canucks fans at least have half decent players who they can (vainly) try to pin hopes on. Buffalo has nothing, is nothing.

Dirty ****ing hit. Shouldn't play again in this league.

(Edit: Yes, I don't agree with myself on him not being able to play in the league again. Still a terrible hit though)

Just because you can hit someone, doesn’t mean you should. That’s the type of hit reserved for a video game. Evans looked predictably lifeless before he even hit the ice, hope he recovers...
