    Re: NHL 2021 Offseason

NYI trades Leddy to Detroit for EDM 2nd and Panik (50% retained).

Honestly NYI got the better end of the deal, but this isn't horrible for Detroit. Might be able to get the 2nd back at the deadline.

Supposedly the hottest FA this year isn't Ovechkin or Hall or Parise or Suter. It's Zach Hyman.

Oilers seem so interested in him that they might be considering a sign and trade with the Leafs so that Hyman can sign with them for 8 years.

Go ahead I guess? Leafs were reported to be interested in Bertuzzi, who does sound like a Hyman replacement anyways, just younger.

That's completely insane, but look who we're talking about.

          Re: NHL 2021 Offseason

Shea Webers career could be over.

This is about the point in his contract that people had been thinking about when the deal with Subban happened. Right now, Weber has 5 years left on his deal at almost 8m in cap hit. Subban has 1 year left at a 9m cap hit.

Now this is where things get crazy. You thought Luongo retiring was bad for the Canucks (who had to endure 3 years of a 3m cap hit)? If Weber decides to retire, Preds end up on the hook for about 5m a season for the next 5 years.

So Weber could likely end up the new Nathan Horton. Although.. after this season, he'd owed 6m total over the final 4 seasons (and 3m total over the final 3 seasons). So could he just retire after the 21-22 or 22-23 season? I'd imagine he'd make more as a coach or some other hockey position than he would if he just sat out for 1m a year.

Why would Weber retire? Didn't Pronger join NHL Hockey Ops while still officially on LTIR?

Canucks got screwed because Luongo's the only one who didn't develop a "career-ending" injury or allergy at a convenient time.

Not sure what the rules are like now in regards to that. If he's allowed taking another hockey job while being on LTIR, then no doubt he'll do it.

But if he has to decide between retiring to take another job or just sitting out his deal that would pay 1m a year, he might just consider retiring.

If I had one guess on which GM traded a 1st and 2nd for Ristolainen, I would have said Ken Holland

                    Not just a 1st, a lottery pick.

                      Re: NHL 2021 Offseason

                      Huge deal incoming.

Canucks get OEL and Garland from the Coyotes. Craziest part, somehow the Canucks found someone to take Eriksson! I'm sure Canucks will retain salary, but this is crazy. I guess it makes sense if Coyotes get a lot back. If Canucks retain 50%, Coyotes only take on a 3m cap hit, but really just 1.5m in salary.

9th pick tonight, Beagle, Roussel and others are involved.

If the 9th pick is the best thing the Canucks are giving up, that would be a huge steal.

                      Edit-Deal is official.

Canucks get OEL (12% retained), Garland
Coyotes get Eriksson (0 retention), Roussel, Beagle, 9th overall, 2nd in 2022, 7th in 2023

I think Canucks won this deal big time.

Well atleast in the short perspective I agree. None of the players going from Vancouver are better than the ones arriving. Hard to know what will become of all those picks. Hopefully it will be a more interesting season for nucks fans than the last one was. 😊👍

OEL isn't the player he once was, but will cost them just over a 7m cap hit, and of course will be their best dman.

And Garland could be the best player of the entire deal. Petterson or Horvat on a line with him should be good.

                              Since July 1, 2015:

                              - The Canucks have acquired 6 draft picks (no 1st or 2nd rounders)
                              - The Canucks have traded away 19 draft picks (2 1st rounders, 4 2nds)
                              - The Canucks have made the playoffs once
                              - The Canucks have the 28th best record in the NHL

The Coyotes desperately tried to hide OEL from top competition last season. He's a defensive liability that might be passable if paired with a reliable stay-at-home type. Of course, the same could be said for Hughes and Myers, and the Canucks have zero reliable stay-at-home types to pair with them.

I keep hearing that OEL and the Sedins are buddies. I hope to God we aren't going down that road.
