Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions (Console)
Also as an avid golfer, I love it. Difficulty is subjective. I’ve found the right median between difficulty and fun factor. I play games to relax not to replicate what I do in real life. Sure the game has its issues, but that’s also why patches exist. Give the trial a try. I think ea play is $5 a month. Or if you have gamepass you automatically get it. 10 hours is plenty of time to form an opinion. If your that anxious to try it, the trial is your best bet.Last edited by jbd345; 05-02-2023, 10:36 AM.Comment

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions (Console)
(putting the dunce/idiot hat on my head for this post):
"If I play this game for a month, will it help me finally shoot a 90 at my local muni?"
Gawd I wish. If there was a commiserate relation to how much I play these video games=to how I play IRL, I would be a scratch golfer at this point.
Still trying to shoot a 90. Oh well. At least in the game I can occasionally shoot 9 under at Sawgrass.Comment

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions (Console)
I wonder what the developers would say about the lack of challenge when in bad spots. (ending up in a bunker or off in the weeds really not mattering)
Do they consider that something to be fixed or working as they intended I wonder?
It's the sort of fundamental aspect of a game design that it makes it hard to think they don't know about it -- and that they must have known about it all through development.
Would they argue for and defend things as they are?
Related to that -- Do we think they are ever going to put in more animations and make it so you aren't getting bail out relief out of small bunkers and awkward lies?Comment

I'd assume Oak Hill is coming in the next week or two, with the PGA Championship just 2 weeks away. Perhaps they can add some updates along with the new course?Orbis Non SuficitComment

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions (Console)
I feel like the statements "there is no penalty for missing fairways" need to be more clarified because that's oversimplfying the issue and not true in most cases. From my experience and testing there is penalty for missing fairways, but many may not see it because 1) it's harder to miss fairways, and 2) the good lie penalties in this game are for long irons, hybrids, and woods, which you'd have to miss the fairway on a long par 4 or par 5 to notice. It also depends on the course, I've found rough lie penalties on Bay Hill and Wolf Creek so far whereas Augusta National does have literally zero lie penalty (that has to be unintentional, right? the second cut looks short in-game but how on earth can you justify that, there has to be SOME lie penalty).
With my low-level created golfer I've missed the fairway on some par 4s and had some tough situations where I had no choice but to lay up because my wood lie was ~18-25% and even long irons were still ~50-55%. I like that and that's the level of challenge this game should be giving for all clubs.
I did some testing with Ian Poulter (low approach recovery attributes) and Scottie Scheffler (almost max approach recovery) at Bay Hill to round out my opinion on this. I think around the 6 iron level is where the rough penalties become too lenient and it only gets worse for short irons and wedges. The scaling of penalties seems to be the issue, from long iron to wedge it feels too much and needs to be shrunk. I'm no irl golf expert but I feel like from a rough situation that absolute max percentage for a full wedge approach shot with Scheffler's attributes should be around 90%, right? And maybe between 80-85% for heavy rough that some courses have. Instead they have 89-97% for a Bay Hill rough wedge shot with Poulter's attributes and 99-100% for Scheffler's. That's way too lenient. Those penalties could make sense for a short game shot but not a full approach shot. I also noticed on Scheffler's attributes the 5 iron approach shot lie penalty was 63-68% but 6 iron leaped to 81-85%. Huh? That scaling needs to be looked at, it was much less drastic for Poulter (52-60% 5 iron, 64-72% 6 iron). Also going into the hack shot, which I think for long irons isn't too overpowered (it adds 10-15% to the lie penalty, Scheffler attributes, which seems fair) but starting at 6-7 iron it essentially erases the lie penalty altogether which feels wrong (also it gives more distance than the normal approach shot which doesn't feel right, since the focus is to get out of a bad lie then power should be less of a focus and thus have less carry than approach).
I'll stop there, there's also bunkers to mention (at Bay Hill it seems to be 91-95% for all clubs, I get that bunkers shouldn't have that much penalty but it should account for a ball being plugged in a bunker depending on how the ball got there). Not sure what the design plan was for this and if it was rushed (probably) but despite the good for long irons and longer it seems severely flawed in many ways and needs a lot of tuning.NCAA: Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions (Console)
I think fixing the lies and penalties for being in bad ones and going into hazards and having to pay the price for that is absolutely essential to great golf gameplay.
You should have to worry about that stuff and plan and shoot accordingly. That's sort of the entire point of different course designs and layouts and locations.
I really hope they prioritize that sort of fixing/tweaking in the months ahead.Comment

Re: EA Sports PGA TOUR Impressions (Console)
I hate to rag on the game further, because I do like it, but that crap with taking you out of a bunker and putting you on the fairway is just absolutely unacceptable and EA should be ashamed of themselves for being so blatantly lazy with that.
The whole point of a bunker is to penalize you and give you a challenge to overcome if you end up in one, nevermind that it doesn't really do that anyway with the overpowered easy mode pick shot for greenside bunkers and fairway bunker barely having any effect on club effectiveness at all.Last edited by Maxflier; 05-02-2023, 12:32 PM.Comment

One more thing on the rough, it does feel like I have less control of my shot coming out of it and it's easier to mess it up, so there is that penalty at least. If only the lie penalties could be penal enough as well.NCAA: Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers
