Re: Buy, Wait or Avoid? EA Sports PGA Tour

So far I like the game quite a lot. I don't see it as easy as others do. Par is good for me.

One thing I don't like is the quick play. First time I used it my first 9 were completely skipped. They had me at +1 which was good for me but I thought maybe they would let me shoot a key putt or a quick play chip or something.

I like the game as well. I think back to where 2K released back in 2020, and it seemed like it took a few patches to get it right. I expect the same here. I love the challenges, and that they will be adding to them as we advance through the season. The career mode actually has some substance to it.

Someone mentioned this above, but watch Respawns video on YT. He goes through all the pros and cons in great detail. The game is not without flaws, but seems to be built on a solid foundation. I think that some people will like it, and some people will hate it for a variety of reasons both ways.

Loving the game on pc. Primarily an offline golfer, I started reading many bad comments on release day. I think playing first and making your mind up is the way to go.

The sad part is that it has one of the most lifeless swing interfaces of any golf game I've ever played. Not only is it capped at 30 FPS on the consoles, there's a built in lag between the start of the stick motion and the start of the golfer's backswing animation. I feel like I'm constantly trying to coax the animation into catching up with the stick, but it never happens.

I prefer playing golf games without the meters on and this one doesn't lend itself to that at all. There's a rumor that they're going to patch in a 60 FPS swing option at some point which * might* help, but if the animation start lag is still there, I don't think the 60 FPS is going to be enough to cure all that ailes it for me. I'll give it a chance though.

The lag is much less noticeable on pc if you have that option?

It's not a matter of easy versus hard. It's that the game programming is out of balance. Drives off the tee are dead straight most every time, you really don't have to put any thought into it. Whereas irons and wedges are tougher, no question. And putting is a crap shoot, not because it's easy or hard, but because it's not programmed very well. Break lines don't break correctly, the putter animation goes right thru the ball, and the ball just doesn't seem to react properly much of the time. Here's a positive review video that's excellent, he goes into great detail regarding all aspects of the game: game play, animations, cameras, career, store, etc, both the good and not so good.

All that said, you can play the game for 10 hours for the cost of a one-month EA Play membership. and so there's no real reason for this thread actually, just try it yourself, that's always best and the only way to really know.

I have Play Pro, so I've been playing it on that and, honestly, if I would have paid $70 for the game, I would be angry as hell.

My advice would be to wait and see how committed EA actually is to substantially improving the game. Their track record across other EA Sports titles for meaningful post-launch support is far from good.

With other EA titles like Madden, FIFA, NHL you see a year attached to the name. Once that years title is released they are on to develop for next year with some attention remaining on the current for roster changes and any debilitating bugs. 12 months development time is ridiculously short by most gaming standards.

You may notice that the new PGA title has no year attached as they have in the past. It hasn't been announced (other than future DLC courses and Ryder Cup) giving a strong indication they are going to continue to support this version. Obviously sales and participation by users will certainly help to keep things moving forward.

That’s what I mentioned in my earlier post that a year wasn’t attached to the name of the game like EA Sports PGA Tour 2023, so there is optimism that the Dev team will continue to patch and build on the current game.

There was no year on the Rory game either

                    Caveat emptor everyone

Doing "better than the annual release games", the ones that EA basically immediately abandons, isn't a high enough bar here.

The onus is on EA here to prove serious commitment.

We did this exact song & dance with Rory and EA did some some updating, (admittedly more than an annual release game), but then still abandoned the game and the genre for eight years.

Just calling it like it is.
We were in this exact spot in 2015.

Given how it went with Rory, just telling people "this time is different" has no believability behind it until it's actually shown.

We'll see how interested EA actually is over time.
Releasing with so many niggles and basic features missing isn't the best start either (IMO)

(at least we have more courses at launch this time - which is very good!).

Rory didn’t have Augusta. The name Augusta is like Madden. It’ll sell with that attached no matter what.

You dont know. I know a bit more than you. Completely new dev team working on this game and their involvement has far exceeded what happened with Rory.

You are fine saying seeing is believing, I get it. One of us will get an "I told you so" In a years time and I am putting all my money on me.

It feels like maybe you are taking my comments personally for some reason?
                              There's no need

I'd be overjoyed if this was way different than Rory

But you come on here and tell us "I know more, but can't say more and I'll be right!"

It'd be better to just say nothing if you can't elaborate, otherwise it's sort of just conversation in bad faith.

Any of us could pop on here and "claim to be X" or "know somebody" and "trust me, I'll be right" ... but when you can't ever say more, it's sort of not right.

                              Is your NDA lifted?
                              The game has released.

What can you now tell us?

Thanks for confirming that. Have you tried setting the frame rate at 30 to see how it compares? I'd be curious to know just how much 60+ FPS helps this game. If I hadn't mangled my CPU socket when I installed my new i7 processor in it when it was misaligned, I could answer that question myself... although I'm sure I would have had to have dropped to 1080p or less to get a frame rate like that with a GTX-1070 8GB.

That initial lag is something I'm sure I'll struggle with if I ever do buy the game. I'm going to give it a few patches and price reductions before I move on this game though. This will be the first golf game I haven't bought right out of the gate in over 20 years, but the 10 hour play trial has shown me that the status of its current swing interface not making it appealing enough to play, no matter how good it looks!
