I gotta agree with PK. I like Forza a lot (I'm not selling it yet because a let a buddy borrow it) but it's not quite the RACER that Toca 2 is. I miss having a 20 car race, where you can hit something, watch a wheel go rolling in front of you, and have a digruntled old Scot telling you the race is over via the radio.

I could write a few pages on the coolness of Toca 2. But I'll spare everyone

i bet Toca 3 is going to be awesome on the 360.

Is Toca 3 going 360? I thought it was a current gen Xbox game? That would be cool if it's going 360 though!

Are you guys just looking forward in general, to when Toca goes 360? I haven't seen anything that suggests that Toca 3 is planned for the next gen.

I've played the living hell out of every version of Codemasters' TOCA series, all the way back to the PlayStation:

TOCA Touring Car Championship (PSX)
Touring Car Challenge (PSX)
Jarrett & Labonte Stock Car Racing (PSX)
Pro Race Driver (Xbox)
TOCA 2 (Xbox)

The finest pure racing series ever on a console, in my opinion. Codemasters knows its sh*t when it comes to racing games.

1. Type TOCA into the search box.
2. Click on the link for Kikizo Gameplay 3 video. Within that video, there is cockpit footage. Not sure if the footage is from the Xbox or PS2.

P.S.: Note how the player overcooks it entering the first two turns at Road America, and the AI car slides past on the inside without contact. Nice contrast from the bumper-car AI offline in Forza. The driver in this video can't drive very well! But then note how there's more contact between the human and AI cars in Aussie V8 Supercars, as that series uses a lot more bump-and-run racing in real life. A very nice touch.

Also just read a great review (I realize I'm months late for this game) at the Eurogamer site. One of the few that really give Toca it's deserved (from what everyone here is saying) recognition.

Good video......I can definitley see what you're saying about the AI. I just don't know how much more aggresive driving I can handle from the Forza AI. When I lose a race, I want it to be because I made a mistake, not because I was given a cheap shot for braking half a foot too early.

The career mode sounds interesting as well.

Here's a quote from an email I got from Codemasters:

In the light of last week’s announcements of both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, some people have been asking if the game [TOCA 2006] is headed to those new platforms. At the moment, no- we’re still focusing on extracting the maximum performance from current generation hardware.

Heck, with the screens released from Toca 3, the graphics excite me more than anything I've seen from the next-gen stuff. That thing looks amazing. But I'm one of those "gameplay before graphics" kinda guys anyways.

On a side not, does anyone know where I can buy World of Outlaws at a decent price? That thing's been selling for $50+ used on E-Bay. Jeez...

The career mode is OK. You don't have a lot of choices or branches in your career. You simply race in the next series, trying to achieve various performance goals.

The cutscenes with the Scotsman and the hot chick manager get a bit old, but the cutscenes do help build a rivalry with the drivers you need to beat in the next series.

TOCA 2 has a decent career mode, nothing outrageous. But the pure racing, online and offline, is fantastic. And the choice of cars, series and tracks also is big fun.

I still think the best career mode I've ever played in a racing game is in NASCAR 2005. That career mode -- starting in modifieds and working up through trucks, Busch and Cup -- is fantastic and addictive as hell. World of Outlaws had a very good career mode, too.
