Yeah rookie is a blood bath sometimes and it gets annoying. Once you get above it the racing gets a lot better.

Here are some good videos on getting out of rookie. https://youtu.be/uqsKm8irA7U
Yep street stocks at Charlotte and that's what I've been working on. My friend back home signed up too and got a 5th in a late race last night. We'd been working on lifting a bit more through the turns as the race goes on and he got it to go 19.95 laps; lost it in turn 4 on the last lap, but no one else was around him.

I'll give what ROABS said a try, find a way to the back, let attrition take out a few guys, and nurse it to a decent finish.

My first foray into GT1 didn't go too well. There was a massive crash on lap 2 in the esses at Watkins Glenn and there was nowhere to go. I thought the track was clear as all of the crashed cars were to the right side of the track and probably didn't slow down as much as I should have, as a result. Instead, a car came out of the melee right in front of me and that was that. 52 minutes of required repairs... a.k.a. YOU'RE DONE!

I did a GT3 race at Zandvoort next to help dull the pain. No issues with others in that one, though I had some issues with off-throttle oversteer in one of the corners and spun twice there, which was unfortunate. Other than that, it was a clean race.

I'm not a great road racer and I'm trying to get back into it this season since I have more time to race after spending most of the last six months on oval (which I am still doing). I'm still usually able to get into the top split or two (2500-2600 iRating), so the quality of racing is usually decent.

I hated Charlotte in Rookie SS, personally. It was just non-stop pedal to the metal madness. I thought USA Speedway was a lot more fun and if you can be fast and qualify up near the front, it's a lot of fun (and it's a fun tracK).

Of course, most people hate USA Speedway in Rookie SS, so maybe I'm just weird!

The quality of racing definitely improves once you get out of Rookie SS, though. Well, except maybe C Fixed trucks...

I pretty much can fit one race in on Thursdays and then I am lucky to get another one in on the weekend. So today I did an hour of practice and entered the 1:15 race for the Skip Barber. I was 11th of 20 on the grid. After lap 1 I was in 7th. Halfway through the lap some other driver had spun and instead of letting me pass him, he tried to reverse back onto the track and destroyed my car. My race was over after 1.5 laps.

It's a joke that this has happened to me more times than not. I really want to enjoy this game and play it for a long time, but if over 60% of my races are going to include wrecks from guys coming back onto the track, maybe I just don't have the luck to race in this game. Literally every other race since I signed up has just about included me getting hit from someone coming back onto the track.

I don't care if I finish 1st or last. I just want a clean race and that literally seems impossible right now. I am getting punished from others being terrible drivers and thus I am being dropped in rating and being put around even more of these guys. It's irritating.
What the video I posted earlier. It takes two to make a wreck like that. I know that you think there is nothing more you could have done but next time that happens save the replay and think what you could have done better. After watching those videos I realized I was going about incidents in the wrong manner blaming others instead of blaming myself for not noticing problems before I had no chance to react.

            Tough luck James.

I was actually thinking about doing a S3 but I think instead I am going to just jump into the iRacing series despite the fact I have missed too many weeks and won't be in the championship hunt. I may do some other kinds of racing but I'm not going to try for a S3 championship.

              Re: iRacing after 2+ years

Got in two more races tonight. First one, the guy on pole was weaving all over the place before the start and didn't go on the green, so the rest of us went, and at least 3 of us got black flagged. Didn't see if anyone else pitted on lap 1 like me. But it did give me a chance to stay out of wrecks and I got a 7th out of it with only 2 points for brushing the wall. Do need to figure out how to not change any tires/gas. That cost me a ton of time and I probably could have finished higher otherwise.

This last one was great. Started 2nd, was in 2nd/3rd for most of the race, and then it got too loose on me with about 4 to go. Was able to avoid all of the other accidents I came upon. Didn't hit anything or any one after losing it on the frontstretch and got it going for a 5th place finish. I'm up to a 2.7 so finally making some SR progress. Going to run one more tonight and see if I can finally get a full 20 laps in. Enjoying it quite a bit more tonight. Now that I'm getting a feel for a car I'll start working on some different tracks.

The guy literally let the first 4 of the pack by, but for some odd reason came back onto the track and just hit me right when I was behind him. The only thing I could've done was go up way high unlike everyone else he did let go by.

It was just an odd occurrence. Guy spins, sits off track letting cars go, but comes back on right when I was there. It isn't like I wasn't with the pack either, I was right there as close to to it as anyone else in it.

LOL, I just ran in another GT1 race and the same crap happened. Another wreck in the esses right in front of me and nowhere to go. Meatball! Ugh. Watkins Glenn is awful as far as wrecks go. The walls are so close to the track that there's often nowhere to go to avoid them.

The iRacing Series is the most fun I've had on iRacing. I haven't been able to really run it for points as I miss too many races (more than the amount of drops weeks you get), though, unfortunately. I did finish 9th in Div. 2 last season, but I think I only ran 27/31 races counted. This season I am in Div. 1.

Wow James that is awesome. I think I am in Div 5 or 6. I've missed too many weeks already though. I think you get 5 drops weeks and I have missed like 11. I wasn't really worried about battling for the championship. I'm just going to turn laps and have fun. Except next week. I have done some practice at Sonoma and that track is really hard in those cup cars.

Do you guys do the open or fixed? I used to run the fixed as much as possible but have not been able to even run one this year. I also have been more into open setups lately and trying to build my own but I barely get time to turn some laps in fixed setups let alone building a competitive one.

Finally out of the douchemonger hell that is rookie, although I saw plenty of morons racing in rookie with D licenses that were still pretty terrible, but hopefully that means if I pick and choose, I can wind up in races where I can actually learn and finish, not hold on for dear life avoiding the ones that probably shouldn't be on the game in the first place. Getting wrecked twice on pace laps was enough to make me consider letting the 3 months go and moving on, but now I might invest in an extra year before 6/30 just to give it some real time and a chance.

Question is, what to try next since I still pretty much consider myself a beginner. I want to focus on road a bit on the side just so I don't neglect it completely, but ovals is my thing, but I need a lot of practice on braking and timing. I haven't played GT5 extensively since 2011 and that's the last real racing experience I had.

Here is a GT1 race of mine from last week at Watkins Glen (the green flag flies around the 2:55 mark). I believe this was the top split of three splits.

I have found I think I prefer the Corvette over the new Aston Martin. The Corvette's engine is just so awesome!

Do you want to race GT cars or open wheel cars? If you want to race GT cars, you can either continue racing the rookie series until you advance to D4.0 and then jump into GT1. Or you can jump into the Skip Barber or maybe the Advanced MX-5 cup. If you want to race open wheel, then the Skip Barber would be a good choice, then after that the Star Mazda (or you could just stick with the Skip Barber as it's the most popular road car aside from maybe the MX-5).

Just did my first NiS race and wow. It was probably a lot better since there were no cautions but I started 3rd in the second to last split and ended up making a last lap pass in the hairpin to take second home, on the lead lap. It was a hell of a race and I'm glad that I am spending my free time racing this game instead of others.
