    Re: iRacing after 2+ years

Just attempted a Blancpain sprint race and didn't make it past the first lap. This time I was the one who screwed up and spun out. Didn't hit anything, but I got nailed by someone else as my car slid back onto the track.

So 2 races, 1 fully completed lap without crashing. That's bad, right?

Brag: Actually finished a race without crashing out (Class A fixed).

Beat: Caught the Docs (I'm making this a thing. Having "The Docs" = bouncing off the outside wall over and over again.) and ended up in the wall 14 times.

Variance: Managed to gain safety rating as only 1 wall hit was a 2x.

EDIT: Anyone know why guys would pit early in an 80 lap class A race? I know a couple people took two tires, but everyone else seemed to take 4 yet were still pitting early under green. Not complaining as I think I picked up a few spots because of it.

You mean something other than the Ruf? That car is likely as close as I'm going to get to driving a Porsche in iRacing, so it's good enough for me. Plus it's a ton of fun to drive.

"The Docs" depend on the track and car. At NH in K&N, that's right. At NH in a truck, "The Docs" are always spinning towards the inside wall. I was tired last night so didn't do much. Might try USA tonight as I find it much easier to drive than I did a couple weeks ago. Still not as fast as some of the times last night (I sure won't be hitting 23's in it yet), but I feel I could finish 50 laps in it.

I know you guys were discussing the trucks at NHMS. I don't race the truck really, so I don't know how good these laps are, but let me know if this helps. 5 laps. First lap at a 31.6, then the rest of the laps are upper 31s-low 32s. I was overdriving the corner exit some. I was surprised at how loose it was for a truck.

The main thing about NHMS is to slow up mid-corner and get the car/truck to turn so you can get a good run off, IMO.

Yes, looks like I'm going to be able to. Interesting setup. It's pretty snug initially, but gets looser after a few laps.

It streamed anywhere? I don't have the track or car to watch in iRacing. I think I saw Chaos mention something before, but maybe that was just a youtube replay.

Nice. I'm going to try to spectate, but I don't know how full the server gets. Probably pretty busy with spotters and such. Hopefully I can at least find a stream.

I thought about trying it, but 80 laps last night was more than enough for me, and that's with me being by myself most of the time. I'll need to work up to those long races.

That was SJ who mentioned the youtube replays, but http://www.twitch.tv/teamabrams should be streaming tonight I believe.

So something I saw mentioned that would help with my driving is setting FOV correctly. I can only use a single monitor since there is nothing for 2, and my FOV was way too high. Now, I don't like it at 45 because I lose all my other vision, but I guess that's what a spotter is for after all. It's like getting a new pair of glasses when you've needed a new prescription for ages. I do think it makes it a bit harder to gauge where you are at some points of the track but everything else seems to make up for that.

Yeah, Abrams, RutgersKev and others will be streaming on Twitch. Plus, you can spectate, as Chaos said. I couldn't stream if I wanted to since my upload is too slow. I'll record the race and maybe upload it to YouTube later, though.

I'm usually in the same split as Abrams and RutgersKev, though I could get bumped out of the top split if participation is higher since it's Indy (Abrams will definitely be in top split; RutgersKev has a lower iR than me, so he'd get bumped first).

I understand, Chaos. I'm not really sure I enjoy these long races since I'm usually pretty miserable by the end, LOL. An office chair doesn't quite suit these endurance races. Then there's the bathroom factor!

TBH, I've never changed it from the default of 78. I run with a single monitor, as well. Ideally, I think it would be best to have the FOV set so I'm closer to the windscreen, but then I'd lose a lot of peripheral vision, which I need without triple monitors. Maybe I'll look into it sometime, but I'm so used to the way I have it set now.

EDIT: Hmm... I tried 45 FOV as the calculator says I should use for a few laps around Indy and I may have opened Pandora's Box. Everything seemed so far away when I went back. Maybe I should give it a try tonight. I do worry about the lack of peripheral vision, but we'll see...

Everything seems slower with a 45 FOV. It seems like it might be a little easier to drive on the limit and make minor corrections. I think I'll try it tonight. If it doesn't work, I'll change it next race. It definitely works fine for running by myself, but we'll see how it is with other cars on the track.

EDIT #2: Maybe I'll do 50 degrees for a little wider view than it calculated so I can see the gauges better.

Actually, I forgot I can change the FOV in-car with the F9 screen, anyways, so it's not very risky to give it a try.
