    Re: iRacing after 2+ years

Thanks Chaos! Worked like a charm. Got in about 40 or 50 clean laps in 2 hours of testing and was able to run laps in the 56's by the end. Still need some work on turn 1 as I lose most of my time there, but not bad at all.

I think the open race is out. I don't know enough to do a setup yet to make it worthwhile. It just sucks the truck fixed race is only 19 laps, but at least they run those more often so maybe I can get some practice and then consider the open later in the week.

      Re: iRacing after 2+ years

I haven't tested Pocono out in the new build yet (the last race I ran was on the previous build and times were at least a second slower, from what I am reading), so I can't judge those laps too much, Chaos. Typically, taking the second line through T1 is fastest (and maybe sliding up a little as you did and taking it low and full-throttle on corner exit). The bottom groove is too slippery to really race on unless you have to. In T2, I always found it best to get as low as you can without clipping the rumblestrips. The rumblestrips can help the car turn, but usually too much so as they can get you pretty loose, so it's best to avoid them. T2 is tricky and it's easy to hit the wall on corner exit and it's easy to get loose on corner entry (but you need to be kind of loose to get the car to rotate). In T3, I've always used the paved strip in the third groove, though I see guys go lower than that, so I think it's personal preference. Whatever the case, T3 is a crucial corner because the frontstretch is very long.

Bumps are a big problem at Pocono. They're everywhere and they'll upset the car when you hit them.

Things may have changed with the new build, though.

Of course, soon enough, the updated repaved version of Pocono will finally come out and it will all be different again.

I had to turn down force feedback significantly at Pocono because it was too easy to lose your line with the wheel.

I'm going to run an A Fixed race tonight. I don't care to do another full-length race. Maybe I can win my first race in nearly a year. Looks like my pace should be good for A Fixed.

Tough race at the end there, James. I didn't see your post until you were about 40 laps in, but you were looking good until that wall hit with about 8 to go. Car didn't seem to have speed in it after that.

Do find it a bit interesting that none of the top 3 had any incidents. Maybe it was just lag, but you guys had some hard hits with the wall a few times from my perspective.

Yeah, I think I'm going to end up doing the same. All the bumps just throw the wheel all over the place.

              Re: iRacing after 2+ years

Bad night of racing for me. First race was Irwindale in thr National series. Despite my bad start from qualifying I was moving up the field and right on the heels of the next two cars ahead. Then they passed a lapped car and when I got right on him and would try low, he'd go low enough I'd lose speed and not be able to. When I'd stay high on the line and was laying off as I was a good amount faster, he'd stay high and I'd coast the entire corner and never get to gas it. Eventually I got a good enough turn in and was midpass in the turn and he comes down on me and he is sideways in front of me giving me a little damage and slowing me way down. Yet I started to catch the 2 guys ahead of me again and again a lapped car is between us. I was riding the guys heels and had a good idea of his line after a few laps of playing it safe and then all of a sudden he slows down at least 15 more mph than normal entering turn 3. I'm already at 80% braking and still couldn't stop in time to avoid his back bumper. My engine is destroyed and I end up finishing 9th I think.

Then my second race was rookie street stock on USA. My last race was incident free there, so I thought I'd had a good chance at a good finish. My qualifying was bad from rust after not racing the car for a few days. So I started near the back. At the start I decided to stay conservative and gave up a few spots to stay near the back, save grip despite only being a 40 lap race and wait out the wrecks that always happen in rookie, especially at this track.....except this backfired as there was only one wreck the entire race. I don't know how often that happens there in that series, but it did and I paid for it. Oh well. I still have fun racing even on the bad nighrs. It still seems like the D4.0 is impossible for me to get haha. I get close and then these nights happen to reset me back at 3.5. Maybe my next few nights will be clean enough that I reach the 4.0.

I am really enjoying the national though. Its easily my favorite series I've tried yet.

I won an official race for the first time since in about 10 months. Yeah. I actually ran two A Fixed races tonight. The first one I kind of threw away a win by hitting the wall while leading with 4 to go (to be fair, the guys behind me were catching me and I might have lost the lead, regardless, however) after leading 49/80 laps. But, in the 10:45 EDT race, I was able to lead 75/80 laps and mostly cruised to a win. The #2 car was about as fast as I was, but he hit the wall a few times and damaged his car. It felt nice to do some burnouts again, haha.

So despite me saying I wasn't going to spend anymore money on iRacing, I've got a Thrustmaster T300RS coming tomorrow. Anyone here using one?

Expecting it to be quite weird, as I've only used Logitech wheels, and I've had my DFGT for something like 5 or 6 years now.

Never used one, but heard great things about them. I've just stuck with Logitech with wheels and most other things.

So I've done about 9 or 10 races in SS and today after one race I was promoted. Yay!! Now I'm stuck cuz I do not have the track that the late models are running on and have to wait another week before payday. Bummer.

Run some more SS and try to keep that SR rising while you wait to be paid.

One thing about Pocono with the Gen 6 is that, if you're up to it, it might help to downshift to 3rd gear in T1 and/or T3. You can definitely get a little more speed in the lower gear, though you have to be more patient with the throttle as you can easily spin out. Probably a good idea for qualifying, but maybe or maybe not for the race itself.

After a couple of weeks in road racing with the Skippy's I think it is time to come home. I did decent on the road but oval racing is where I should be. I need to start gearing up my racing skills again.

Yea, I tried it here and there and it's something I was comfortable doing in a practice, but around traffic, I'm not sure how much I'd utilize it. I'll wait and see if my laps are any good. I was running 56's and I watched a fixed Pocono race on youtube where the guy was running top 10 and was getting 58's/59's, so it gives me hope, depending on which split I get in.

The truck I can't get any speed in. I ran a few 58's in practice, but just couldn't improve on the lap. I will probably just use that race as a way to run clean, hopefully get safety rating up. Haven't decided which Cup race I want to try. This has already been a long week at work so Thursday night might be too much for me.
