    Re: iRacing after 2+ years

Plate racing is just rough online with randoms. I tried running in races twice and both times it got ugly fast. I finished 7th and 4th respectively but not without drama.

1st race - got up to 3rd then the second place car took out the leader and most of the field. Then for some reason the lapped traffic decided to go head hunting because they were pissed. They took out most of us out... I finished 7th 2 laps down.

2nd race - from the first lap the front of the field went 3 and 4 wide... I sat in mid-pack for most of the race then the big one happened and I escaped with minimal damage. I had a random partner and we sat in 5th and 6th. Then the ugliness happened again - A damaged car running solo in 4th decided he was not going to let us pass and tried taking us out. He missed us! Finished 4th.

I enjoy iRacing but random rooms are too unpredictable. Not sure folks really care about their safety rating as they once did. For now, I guess I'll stick to road and non-plate tracks. I'm opting to start in the back (not qualifying) if I'm not fast and shoot for the first row if I am.

I've been slacking this week. Haven't put any time into a Cup setup yet and only have 2 days left. I ran one truck race. Qualified 5th and finished 2nd. No one knows how to save their damn tires. It only takes 5 laps of running full throttle as fast as you can before the truck wants to go into the wall out of 4. I saved just enough but started my run at the leader too late and wound up 3 tenths short.

        Re: iRacing after 2+ years

My annual bonus told me to update my computer. i7's happened to drop in price at the same time so I went with an i7-6700K and a GTX 970. I'm looking at some affordable 24" 144 Hz monitors from Acer that have great reviews, but I think I'm going to wait before I pull the trigger on spending several hundred more.

I'm excited for Vegas. Atlanta went pretty well last Sunday morning and Vegas is even easier to drive. May be scary how much better others can get the open setup, though. Atlanta there wasn't much improvement made by some. I had a setup good enough that I could go 40+ laps on the tires at least while others were giving in at 20-25. Got me a top 10.

I've decided to make the jump into the open setup world as well. I'm just trying to get my line down right now. What is your strategy for making a setup doch and do you have any guides?

I'm going to run Vegas but it will be interesting with no setup right now and running on Friday night.

I haven't started my setup at all but I usually run the Sunday morning. For Atlanta I had to borrow someone else's as no matter where I went from the fixed setup, it wasn't helping me. My strategy is usually for long runs, so I usually like to get the car low up front and then try to get the tire temps even using Motec. I hate iRacing's temps as they don't tell me anything about what the car does over a lap. After that, I just start working with feel. How hard can I drive it and what does it do?

I watched a few videos on YouTube, this one probably being the most relevant as bumpstops were gone and most of the older videos have setups involving them and it just didn't translate as well for me.

This is extremely helpful although I think they have an error on tire pressure effects. It's backwards from most, but other wise, a ton of information.

I use this as a quick sheet in testing and during races to make adjustments.

Thanks for the information. I was watching some setup stuff from David Cater on Youtube and it made sense. I'm going to finish watching it later and then try it out on track. This first week is going to probably be a little painful though with not much time working on the setup.

We should get together once a month and turn laps in an all OS room.

I lied a bit about Vegas. When I ran laps after buying the track, it felt so smooth, but after the truck race the other night and Xfinity last night, it is so bumpy! Not much better than Atlanta in some respects, but the track gets tight quickly and I haven't made progress on a setup yet so I'll give it another go and maybe find something I'm comfortable with and hope I can go 40+ laps and do it on 2 stops. I'm really hoping for long green flag runs so I can just let the field come back to me. I just felt like in the Camaro at least that when driving hard, some guys were still pulling away from me.

                      I'd be down.

I've been practicing my setup for the open race tomorrow and it will be tough. Las Vegas does not like tires.

Hey guys I'm pretty new to iracing. Raced a lot of Rookie/D class and a little C class from October -December and then got too busy with school and work. Currently I'm a class B, very close to Class A but I've ran mostly Truck Races and Just one Xfinity race which was two nights ago. My main question is, without knowing virtually anything about the actually setups, (only ran fixed races) what's the first step to learn how to get into adjusting the car in an open series?

We posted some links on the last page. I started watching this video.

Apparently it is a little outdated (there is a new video talking about all the suspension changes) and it isn't incredibly exciting but it is good info.

Well my setup wasn't perfect but I did a great job managing my tires and I ended up passing a lot of people on the long runs. The cautions killed me. I was catching the leader and was going to pass him before the checkered but I still ended up with a second place. Not bad for not doing a NiS race in about 6 months or so and also not bad for my first open setup.

I'm not sure what to do with mine. If I get a cool track, it's fine. I can get into the 28's and I can keep that up, but I imagine so can everyone else. On a hot track, I see guys running low 29's and I can barely crack a high 29. Now they may not be in my split, but I just don't see how I can make it fast and driveable. I may just try to cool it on the fast laps and get something that can go 40 laps in a small range. Hope for the long runs like I had like at Atlanta where we went 80+ caution free.

I wish iRacing wouldn't just list the fast time for everyone, show multi-lap averages. If a guy can run a second faster than me, but he can only do it for 2 laps and then he falls off after that, that sure does make me feel better about what I'm doing. Would be easier than researching every guy in practice.

I had a problem with the speed. My fastest was a 29.6 in my split. The guy who won ran a 29.3. There were other people who were faster than me. The key is the tire wear and long runs. That's where I made ground. I had a comfortable car with decent tire wear and decent times. I had enough where I could battle cars and wear their tires out faster than mine and then it was easy to pass them.

In my opinion, get the splitter sealed, comfortable handling, and then tire wear. Your speed should sort itself out from there. As long as you aren't off by much and you have 2 of those 3 I listed you should be fine if you keep it clean and stay out of trouble. Racing is so much more than speed as well. You have to keep yourself calm and manage your race as well.

Good luck with your Vegas setup and in your race.
