EPatetta - Are you playing with the game configured as easy as possible with respect to assists, levels, etc. I too am a newbie and I'd really like to give this a try but your post scares me.

No i made it pretty difficult for a beginner. Set the AI to hard, simulation damage, strict cornering rules. Don't remember which assists i left on. Don't be discouraged. The game is awesome.

Wow, I had a horrible race in Baku. I got 4th in China in my Haas and Baku came and could only qualify 10th and then on the first lap got nailed and had wing damage had to pit to replace it, then I binned it into the wall. Rough day.

If you put the assists on full, lower the difficulty... the biggest obstacle you'll have to over come then is knowing the tracks. Obviously they're all different and unique. If you don't know whats coming, and you're off the racing line, you're going to be in trouble. So, for beginners I'd say turn on the assists, get comfortable with the tracks, and as you get used to it, slowly scale back the assists, and turn up the difficulty when you're ready.

Also, for learning the tracks, you can turn on the racing line assist too, which will really help you get an idea for whats coming up on the road ahead. The mini-map can help too as an assist.

Lastly, watch the tutorial videos to get an understanding of some of the advanced things... such as DRS, ERS, etc. etc.

Also for beginners, as has been said and it can't be overstated, brake in the straights BEFORE the turn, not through the turn. You want brake and then roll through the turn smoothly, then as you are just starting to come out of the turn, apply accelerator.

As has also been said, use what assists you need, set the AI difficulty down to 50 or whatever you are comfortable with, and use the time trial mode when visiting a new track to practice it 'for free' before doing the practices that count in your career and wear on the car parts.

Racing line (especially in 3d) is invaluable...I've been playing this series for years and I use it all the time. I also have traction control at Medium, Brake assist off, ABS on.

Use whatever assists you need in order to have an enjoyable experience, but also try not to make it so easy that you feel like you're running test laps all by yourself with a 25 second lead.

Oh wait....that happens in real F1.

No worries! I remember the first F1 game I bought in this series years ago and I was.... lost. I was hitting anything and everything. Spinning out, sliding everywhere. No idea where I was going. Now, several years later I can jump right in nail almost every track. Some still make take me a lap or two in order to remember fully, but the more laps you run, the better off you'll be. I'd also recommend running at least 25% race distance. That way you're turning anywhere from 13-18 laps typically depending on the track. Combine that with your practice sessions/programs in career and you'll get a good feel for the car and tracks in a hurry.

As what I'd call a veteran of the series... I still play with the line on, traction control on medium, and with the corner cutting rules set to regular, not strict. I'm using a controller, and while I've gotten good at feathering the triggers for gas and brakes, and smoother steering with the sticks, i just find it too tricky with a controller to fully have precise control over them while still running fast, and having fun.

Remember, it's a game still... so put the settings where you need to in order to enjoy it the most.

Oh, and that's another tip. As mentioned above, brake before the turns, not in the turns. AND... be light on your triggers if using a controller. Don't just mash the brake or throttle down to 100%. You've got to baby them, especially coming out of turns.

I have been playing this game for years and use a good amount of assists. I use medium traction, ABS on, braking off. I have been tinkering with the AI settings in grand prix mode to figure out where I need to be before I starts the career mode. Also need to determine which F1 team I want to join.

There is so many games coming out soon that I want, Spider Man, NBA, FIFA, NHL. Recently picked up Madden however that has not been played since F1 came out.
                    My Teams:

                    EPL - Liverpool FC
                    MLB - Atlanta Braves
                    MLS - Charlotte FC
                    NBA - Charlotte Hornets
                    NFL - Carolina Panthers
                    NHL - Carolina Hurricanes

I highly advise to practice with the driving line turned off. Took me a while to race good without the line but man does it make the game better.

Always nice having new fans on board. Codemasters did a great job with this game and have been rewarded with some really good reviews. So I'm not surprised that we are seeing new fans jump into the series.

My only issue... its just alot to control. Too many damn button presses per lap if you're going to manage the ERS, and manually shift gears too. I need to find a better controller layout. Or maybe do some research into an elite controller to see if that will give me more button options to control ERS without the MFD/d-pad setup the game ships with.
The setup I am in the process of getting used to is this.

                          TV overhead cam
                          Medium Traction control
ABS none (this is where it is different and boy do I like it) it is a must try. I thought it was going to be too difficult, but I love the little tire lock up. Just a brief spell of smoke.
                          Automatic transmission
Manual ERS another nice wrinkle that once you get comfortable you must try. It is a little difficult but I use settings in section that I can safely switch too.
Difficulty I am not that good around 28.

I have had some really good races

Think I may fold and get this, only thing holding me back is how much work is all the testing this time? last one become a bit of a chore and I am a bit time limited when I get to sit down so the idea of having to do countless laps to tick some box so I can progress is a bit daunting or is it a bit more streamlined?

Do you have any tips on how to learn to race without it? Tried to race australia, the track im mist familiar with but man, crashed in about every corner. Have been using the racing line for forever and noticed I have no clue how the tracks actually look like and therefor have no idea when to brake.

Practice practice practice, was all I could do. Keep your eyes focused far ahead and look for the curbs, also glance at the map.

Practice at slower speed if you need too.
