Re: Official PS3 Discussion Part II

Developing on the PS3 is "fun." From the developer of IO Interactive. (Hitman/Kane and Lynch)

He said: "It's a new platform for us. It's our first PS3 game. It's a challenging platform to develop on, but it's also one that has a lot of potential that's just waiting to be unlocked as people get to know it better and as developers get more skilled at utilising the machine."

He said: "The Xbox and the PC are very similar. They are just two very powerful CPUs and you can make it through your threads and be sure that it's going to run reasonably OK. The PS3 doesn't have many general purpose CPUs like a multi core system has on the PC side. It has a CELL processor which is itself a pretty powerful processor, but if you're really going to get something out of it you're going to have to utilise the SPUs on it, which are small special purpose units that you write little programs for doing whatever you need to get done.

"Those are not just standard threads that you just spawn like you do on a PC. You have to really think it through and identify areas in your game that will benefit from this and isolate that code and make the cuts so you can transfer the minimal amount of data to and from those units and get the most processing power out of them."

He added: "It's a very different approach. The code ends up being rather different than it is on the Xbox and the PC. You can start with something that's pretty much the same and then you try to run it on the PS3 and it doesn't run very well. Then you start to optimise it and optimise it and you get further away from where you started but you really start to unlock some of the potential of the PS3."

"Well obviously it's something that requires a bit of resources and special effort, which costs money", he said. "But on the other hand it's something that I think most developers are rather keen on getting into because it's a new fresh system and it's an interesting architecture. Development wise it's fun. It brings back a lot of memories from college and university. In many ways it's a fun architecture to work on but definitely one that's also going to cost you some money because you need to write special purpose code for it."

If only he wasn't the only developer who thinks its fun.

Sony responds to the 40gb high failure rate rumor.

"We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PlayStation 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story," said SCEE president David Reeves in a statement. "Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3."

Then, this morning, Gamed itself issued a full retraction. "Yesterday we published a report that the Belgian chain Game Mania had recovered a large number of faulty PS3 40GB it had sold to customers," read the article. "Today we got the report that this information is not correct. According to Sony and Game Mania the report was based on an unfortunate coincidence of circumstances and was totally not representative [of PS3 sales]. Thusly, both parties asked us to retract this report."

        Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus.

$1000.00 says you have a PS3 again when MLB the Show 08 comes out and everyone and their mother on OS is stroking the crap out of it.

the 40 gig better not die on me. i just invested my gaming future into it by trading my 360 towards it. as far as the ps3 dying a slow death. I really believe that is innacurate. to me this is just the calm before the storm. i have done alot of research and truly believe the ps3 will be the definitive gaming system when its all said and done.

The PS3 won't die, thankfully, but it won't win in this Generation. The 360 will win this go... Microsoft has a lot more of developer support for it. It's going to be much like the PS2 vs XBox. XBox had the better hardware, but sony has the bigger install base. Thus most developers spent time programming for the PS2 instead of the XBox or gave the XBox sloppy ports much like the PS3 is getting right now.

There will be a round 3 of Sony vs Microsoft.
What will be interesting to see is if Blue Ray or HD-DVD is player of choice for said future systems.

Re: Official PS3 Discussion Part II

While I think MS has established a significant early lead, its too early to tell who will win. We can't discount the Wii either which by the end of 2008 will probably be leading the console in terms of overall sales. I personally think this will be more like the Genesis vs. SNES days when both the 360 and PS3 will be supported evenly. There are still a lot of PS2 owners out there who haven't upgraded yet and if the prices are similar, they may stick with Sony and the PS3. If MS doesn't fix their hard drive issues, I really think it will really hurt their sales down the road as the price point difference is marginal now.

This is just the early stage of a very long lifespan for these systems. I really believe that all companies, including EA, will take advantage of some of the unique things the PS3 can do as they have a better handle on the system now. Either way, I really don't care if the games look the same on either console. I didn't buy my PS3 expecting the games to be better than the 360 anyways. I bought it because of the Show, easier and cheaper roster transfering, Blu Ray capabilites and reliability.

Hell, I just bought it for reliability.

Anyway, the install base is just as strong with the PS3 as it was with the PS2 after one year, and just as strong as it was for the 360 after one year. No it might not surpass the 360 in terms of this generation, but I see no reason why devs won't be supporting it for years and years to come.

As far as the PS3 vs. 360 spiel goes..

If the PS3 does manage to claw to number 1 in 2009 (for example), will the 360 disappear? No, and vice versa.

You don't have to "win" this generation to be a supported console, IMO. This gen will be close to the 16-bit days, where everybody had their moment in the sun, and survived until the next go-around--for the most part.

I don't think it's that at all. MS may have stumbled in their path with the RROD and all that, but they planned being on top from the beginning. They are ahead of the ps3 in quality games, quantity of games, users, and price. They could even drop a 360 to $199 to push consoles to the cheapo's who aren't even looking to get a ps3 this holiday if they wanted.

The cost of development means that corporate owned game developers will make the game for one console, and port to another. The majority of game developers/publishers don't care which has better hardware, they just want the most money. This is the xbox vs ps2 generation again, but swapped.

Bottom line: there won't be a console "death" (Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Neo/geo, etc.) this generation. That's all I'm saying.

                            DIVX support coming to PS3

DivX, Inc. today revealed a partnership with Sony to integrate its video playback technology into PlayStation 3. While a consumer-targeted firmware update has not been dated, developers who update their SDKs to version 2.00 can already utilize the DivX decoder technology for use in their games. But who cares about games anymore? With DivX support enabled (hopefully in the near future) for PS3 owners, a lot of that juicy BitTorrent content you've compulsively horded on your basement PC can be effortlessly streamed upstairs to the console. Now if they'd just add Xvid support you could finally cut the cable bill altogether...

HOLY... that's a HUGE move for both Divx and Sony.

HUGE. No more converting, installing Linux, blah blah blah... just plug and play.

I love my PS3's multimedia capabilities. Now if we only got some games... I almost feel like N64 owners felt. At least they got 526 games of Mario...

I really have no clue how divx will affect the PS3. I'm simply ignorant on the matter. What I DO want is to be able to do is download HD movies like the 360 has been doing for quite some time now. What's the hold up? They have been talking about doing this for a year now and still nothing.
