Re: Official PS3 Discussion Part III...

I believe that my 20 GB is also going out. I have googled about it and found out that many people are having the same problems. They are blaming it on the new 3.65 update.

My system hasn't YLOD yet, but it seems to crash and cut off every day now. It has crashed at least 3 times when playing the show, right at the end of games.

It would really suck if it is my system, I just upgraded to a 320 harddrive a day after this patch came out.

Hmmm. I have a 20GB and haven't had any problems after the update. It seems after each update it gets blamed for system failures.

It also just might be terrible luck for me. According to my brother, it never cuts off on him. He plays The Show and Infamous just as much as I do, and the only time it cut off on him was when I was watching him play Infamous.

I have and it worked for about a month after that then the same YLOD. I fixed it again and then traded it in.
Just got irritated with it. I now have a PS2 I bought for 50.00 ad a new Slim and that suits me.

Yeah Skyboxer, I needed a Blu-ray player still. I bought a used Slim 120GB for 203 with shipping. This round of consoles have pissed me off, I'm on my third 360 and now 2nd PS3. I will be waiting for awhile on the new consoles.

Yep. Amazingly I still have the launch 360(Free repair so technically it is the "second") but am on second PS3 and was on my second Wii(Free replacement) before selling it.

I think I know what is wrong with my PS3. I think the blu-ray eye/part of my Ps3 is burned out/messed up. I tried to watch a blu-ray on my Ps3 and it began to freeze and make noises. When I took it out the disc it had new scratches on it(it didnt have none). So depending on the cost of repair, I might have to buy a new console.

Every time I turn my PS3 on, it beeps, indicator light blinks red, green, then red throughout. Sometimes it does the same thing but blinks red, yellow, then red throughout. I'm able to fully power it on after a few tries by having to manually press the power button and it still plays games/movies.

I'm worried it's gonna die soon though. Anyone else ever experience this? I have the 40GB fat PS3.

Re: Official PS3 Discussion Part III...

New revision, price cut on the way?

According to a well-placed industry source who wishes to remain anonymous, developers were recently notified that a new revision of the PlayStation 3 is in the testing process that will feature a new copy protection system not on the motherboard but inside the BD-ROM drive itself, similar to the Xbox 360.

Presumably this would at least prevent these newer consoles from running copied games with an additional layer of authentication. It’s likely that there will be some kind of watermark on genuine PlayStation 3 discs that the drive is looking for. All of these measures are in response to the acquisition of the PS3 root encryption key earlier this year (2011) by hacker GeoHot which allows unlicensed code to be run on the PlayStation without restriction.

This new hardware revision will be accompanied by a firmware upgrade that contains newly optimized Blu-ray playback drivers that can now handle BD-Java during Blu-ray 3D playback, at least on the 2D level.

This is a godsend for Blu-ray authors because they no longer have to author discs 3 times. Once for 2D, once for PS3 and once for full power BD3D.

There is no news whether or not this new firmware will also bring lossless audio to PS3 3D playback but our source indicates they doubt that this feature will be added any time soon due to the number of SPEs decoding the additional 1080p stream occupies.

This hardware revision is expected to accompany a price drop on the system hardware that could come as early as the Tokyo Game Show this September (2011).

Great, I'll be buying another ps3 for my garage soon. When (if) we see a price drop I'll be all over it.

Sony intros new PS3 Slim in Japan: lighter, consumes less power

Fresh from the Land of the Rising Sun comes news that Sony has updated the original PS3 Slim (CECH-3001B) with a lighter, less power-hungry model. The new Japanese PS3 CECH-3000B weighs in at 5.7 pounds -- as opposed to its 6.6 pound elder brother -- and even lowers its wattage to 200W from the previous 230W. The unit will retail at the same ¥34,980 price point (or $435 for the Yanks) as the original Slim, and while a relatively plain 320GB flavor seems to be on tap for now, a 160GB Tales of Xillia bundle will purportedly hit this September. No announcement has been made for its North American counterpart, but with the system already in the FCC's clutches, you can bet it'll be making an intercontinental trek in short order.

Same price the 320GB model has been in Japan since debuting last year, it's just the dollar is stronger today than it was last year.
