I don't know about that. I think of high-end gaming laptops that run in excess of $3,000 and just like that the PS3 doesn't seem pricey at all. Really it's just Sony's version of an Elite w/ the HD-DVD add on, isn't it? In those terms, the PS3 is actually cheaper than the 360 by a quite a bit.

And sure, if you don't care about blu-ray then it won't be a big deal to you; but as someone whose blu-ray collection is starting to grow, I have to say blu-ray is pretty sweet (I don't know that I'll be buying anymore DVDs, for example) and without a PS3 I'd still be watching DVDs. Point being, you can't just overlook that the PS3 plays HD movies - unless you don't like watching movies in HD, it's a big factor that needs to be considered in when thinking about the cost of the hardware.

4 car payments on a POS car. You make the PS3 sound like buying a house. Love how you add on inflated prices to make is sound much worse.

Huh?? Where did people get into a discussion on which system is better? I thought we/they were discussing points on the system's games and whether or not a transition was viable? I guess this was slightly off-topic...

I think the one key post that threw everything off was the breakdown of pricing for a PS3... which was completely ridiculous and inflated.

If I had to break each down, here's how I would do it:

360 w/ 20 GB HD: $349

vs.

PS3 w/ 40 GB HD: $399

If you compare what you get with the two, the PS3 adds in a Blu-Ray player and wireless. If you want the HD-DVD add-on you can probably get it for very cheap but the 360 wireless adapter is still $100. Yes, you need an HDMI cable for the PS3, but they cost $6 online...

And that's why the thread was created. Compared to what you get for the money, I agree with the OP.

Edit: To be fair, you don't get PS2 emulation or media card slots with the 40GB PS3... and you also only get 2 USB cables. But IMO this is still on par with the 360 Premium... and if you pay the extra $100 you get all this an a bigger HD.

I guess people are taking the word cheap and making it relative to their finances... and that may have been the problem here in the thread.

True that. Relative to my finances the PS3 is expensive for me, but in general it is cheaper than a lot of blu-ray players out there I would assume. They just need to bring back a PS3 with PS2 support.

For somebody swimming in debt from college and grad school loans, 50 bucks seems expensive to me

you have to factor in gas costs too when purchasing a PS3. That will add $75 to the total.

Let's see how much money I need to cough up just to buy the cheapest version, and MLB The Show 08.

-$60 HDMI cable (What? The only "true HD machine" doesn't come HD out of the box? FU!)

-$55 DS3 controller (If you want to play the game the way it was meant to be played, then yes it's a necessity. How are you going to hide your pitch location if it weren't for rumble? You can't. Hey dude, look away - I'm locating my pitch)

TOTAL: $575 + 7% AZ sales tax = $615.25 to play my game.

All anyone pointed out was that putting down $60 for an HDMI cable when you could easily get one for under $10 is just trying to put down the system for no reason. Don't need to get cranky about it.

Anyways, I gotta agree with the original post. I have a 360 and a PS3, and yes, I play the 360 more for games, but the PS3 is a fantastic, and yes, cheap machine for what it offers. It does have good games, as I have had a blast with MLB08, Uncharted, and Motorstorm. I am also really looking forward to future games such as MGS and Motorstorm 2, among others.

On top of that, the Blu Ray player is the biggest selling point for those with an HDTV. It is one of the best BR players you can find, and it comes bundled with a next generation gaming machine. Can't beat that. I already have collected 20+ BR movies to go along with my 40+ HD-DVD movies, so my high def collection is lookin good.

I used to say I never would buy a PS3 because of the price, but when you consider it comes with the THE future of DVD's bundled in, along with some very promising next gen games on the forecast, then it's a no brainer.

I cant believe a PS3 is so cheap...
