Yes, unless you end up getting a slim, there is a transfer utility to transfer most things from one PS3 to another via ethernet cable.

Re: PS3 Repair and/or Death Thread
Mine was stuck in the sense that I couldn't eject the disc because of some sort if misalignment. It would actually release and try to eject, so that was good news for me. But if it's stuck, there's no way for you to be able to release that disc from the shut off motor without disassembling all of the gears and what not, and you're definitely prone to breaking something.
But for me, I was able to take apart the system then get as close as possible to completely stripping it down where the disc was stuck, press the eject button, then manually slip it out after it was released. If your system can't turn on, I can't help you there. You're going to have to send it in for repair and request them to take it out for you... that, or break the system as an effort to get it out.
NOTE: Opening up your system voids the warranty and could be subject to not being repaired depending on whether you further damage your system.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

it just seems that a unit purchased in January 2008 should not have its blu-ray die...i'm a casual gamer...watch an occasional movie...just can't accept that after 2.5 years the system is (essentially) toast.Bummed that you're not on my ignore list yet?.....Don't worry, I'm sure you will be very soon.Comment

Re: PS3 Repair and/or Death Thread
I doubt there is one. I know a PC has one, but it ejects from a disc tray unlike the PS3. The PS3 gears are locked by the motor, it doesn't eject quite the same way. There's a "force eject," which I believe only operates when the PS3 is turned on.
You can still try it, though. Just hold onto the eject button for about 5 - 10 seconds and see if it force ejects. That might actually work if it can do it without any power.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: PS3 Repair and/or Death Thread
My brother has had nothing but problems with his 40gb PS3. I think it was the one that came with Spiderman.one last thing......forr those of you with the issue similar to mine.....40 GB PS3 blu-ray lens issue (reads DVD's/ CD's just fine but NOT blu-ray movies/games)....have any of you filed a complaint with the BBB?

Right now his PS3 is just shutting down on him. He powers it on, and he is saying a light flight flashes on it and shuts down. Has anyone had similar problems?Comment

Re: PS3 Repair and/or Death Thread
I got the YLOD on my first generation 60gb PS3. Have my COD: WAW disc stuck in there. Good thing I don't play zombies much anymore or I'd be in trouble. Its still stuck in the game (I bought a new PS3 slim). If I find the interest, I'll take it apart and get it out, but I will not pay Sony to get it out.NFL: Green Bay Packers

Re: PS3 Repair and/or Death Thread
Just got mine back from the local store. Turns out they can't fix it this time (something about the power supply), at least they refunded my money. They didn't even want it for parts. Said to ebay it, might get $40. Very disappointing.Comment
