Re: PS3 Repair and/or Death Thread

Ok I just got YLOD on my 60 gig, so I have a couple questions. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could answer them:

    1. What happens to my HDD if I send the system into Sony for repair? Do I get the one with all my saved data back?

    2. How could I transfer my saved data on the HDD onto some type of a flash drive, etc if the system doesn't turn on?

    3. What would be the best possible option for me to pursue?

    4. Does the new PS3 slims have the YLOD also?

My co-worker took his PS3 to a guy who advertises for repairs of PS3s. He did the reflow, put a bigger fan on, etc and his PS3 didn't last another month. Sadly, if you get the YLOD it seems you are on very borrowed time if you fix it. When mine dies, it's PS3 Slim time.

        1. If you send it to Sony, you get a different refurbished system. You lose all of your data that is not backed up

        2. Don't think you can save it but I could be wrong.

        3. You can try to fix it yourself(youtube is very helpful here). I had mine ylod on me 3 times and I fixed it each time and then it ylod'd again so I just said forget about it. I am going to buy a slim(if I can ever find one). You can fix your PS3 yourself but if it has already ylod'd once, then chances are that it will happen again. It is just a matter of time, unfortunately. If you fix it, back up your data immediately.

        4. I have not heard of any slims getting the ylod. They are much smaller and more efficient and produce less heat.

Ok, so I assume backup means a flashdrive right? I figured there would be something online that could help me learn how to get my 2k10 out of the ps3 and since it seems like I will lose all my saved data under any option. I think I will just look for a new ps3 slim 120 gb since it sounds like the YLOD could happen again to me. I don't want to have to keep paying sony 175 after shipping to fix it, so the PS3 slim sounds like the best option. Thanks for your help.

Ok, I just had one other question. I am planning to get the 120 gb but I was just wondering from a curiosity standpoint, who is the 250 gb marketed towards?

If you buy a Slim now, make sure it's a model number CECH-2101A as the 2100 series has the new 40 nm chips inside. The 2000 series is the old Slim with 65 nm.

I don't know but with the semi-shortage of Slims I can only assume the new 40 nm Slims will be in most stores sooner than later.

Re: PS3 Repair and/or Death Thread

Now I'm totally disappointed. Please bypass if you're not into reading. Had to get it off my chest.

My other two posts in this thread talked about my PS3 60gb YLOD. Took it to the local guys, they fixed it last month, gave me a 6 month warranty and sent me on my way. Didn't think to back up my stuff, stupid/lazy I know. Anyways, less than a month goes by and it dies again with YLOD. Took it back to same store for a warranty fix and now they can't fix it. At least they gave me my money back. Took it to another local guy with hopes he might be able to do something they can't and pay $50 for him to try and still nothing.

Go out and buy a 250gb slim last Friday. Turn it on and start trying to set it up with my existing account. Put in the only email/pass that I have been using since I got a PS3 ID(2006). Tells me invalid information. Go online and try to get the password reset. Says my email/birthdate is wrong. So now my only option is to call Sony.

Call Sony and even though I can provide all the identifying information about myself: address, psn online ID (taylex), credit card used, they cannot help me. I give them the email and they say if it's correct, they will send password reset info. Got the email today and it says I provided the wrong email address that would be linked to that ID.

Do some more reading, researching, kicking myself, going crazy, etc. I know I can't be wrong about my email (use only two in my personal life and know it's not the 2nd one), saw it every time I got kicked out and had to manually sign back in (although I had it prefill the fields), but I know what I saw.

Then I read, stupid again I know, that I should have been receiving confirmation emails for every purchase made in the store. Bought like 10 or so rock band tracks late last year, only things I've ever purchased from the store. Looked back at my email account, never received one email. Looked in the junk mail folder and nothing. At the time, saw the money was coming out of my bank account, was downloading the tracks, figured it was all good. I had to know the password to be able to put funds in my wallet in the first place. Call back Sony and of course there's nothing they can do about it. They can't see any identifying info on their screen to verify me. I keep thinking it has to be something on their side that is wrong but they're not going to spend the time to look into it.

I never had a problem getting/playing online, never changed my email/pass. Now my BFBC2 VIP stuff is gone, rock band tracks are gone, trophies, etc. It's not much, I know others have lost way more, but it just sucks to have to start all over. The real kicker is that all the info I need, that would have alleviated all of this mess, now sits in my garage, dead, with no way to get to it.

Re: PS3 Repair and/or Death Thread

Wow dude, that's a real killer there. I kind of faced the same scenario with my PS3 in losing everything, only I was able to get most of it back thanks to accessing my account (though a lot of saves are now gone). I can't even fathom how you're feeling, that must be horrible!

What's worse is the time that I relied on my backup external HDD to come through for me, but then even that went corrupt. It's very tough to rely on technology sometimes, because you just never know when something is going to crap out.

Fortunately, I've never ever experienced the YLOD. In fact, I don't even know what happens when I experience it, so if I ever run into this thread and describe its symptoms, you are all probably going to laugh at me and say "Welcome to my world," because many people here have gotten it.

Dude, I'm so sorry for your loss there. That e-mail thing seems sketch if you've never received confirmation e-mails of any sort before.

I appreciate it. The thing that still drives me nuts is they sent me a test email the 1st time I called Sony on Friday and then the invalid info email Sunday and I got them both no problem. Last time I got email from Sony it was an ad from the PS Network, May of last year, and then nothing until these two. They had to have my email address in their system if I never changed anything on my side.

I even said I would send it in to be repaired but they told me if someone else has already touched it, they weren't going to. You figure if anyone could have brought it back to life, they could.

Ended up taking back the 250gb (was a 2000B model) after hearing the newer ones will have the smaller chip/less heat. Now I guess I'll sit back, wait until it's available, and debate whether to get back on the horse or not. Wife's been supportive saying it's not a big deal, go get a new one, quality of life thing. She's right, it's not that big of a deal, guess for me it's part mourning/part assuring myself I'm not losing my mind. This will eventually pass, it was just a gaming system id.

I'd wait for the 2100 series. It may be there already.
