Re: Guilt, gaming and the "too many games" syndrome

I'm proud to say that in the past six months I've only bought 2 games for the Xbox and PS3. I did get 4 Wii U games for Christmas with my Wii U but I think I have finally gotten over my compulsion to get so excited about new titles I have to have them on release day.

I do plan on joining Gamefly soon so I can still play some games I'd like to try but don't think I will finish or play a ton but I think I'm going to be getting only about 4 or 5 games per year going forward and only titles like Forza and NCAA football that I know I will play a lot..

P.S. one thing that's helped me is I made a rule I can't buy a sequel without beating the game before it first (for example buying the recent Batman game without beating the one that came out a couple of years ago). Since I rarely beat games that eliminates a lot of games...

Re: Guilt, gaming and the "too many games" syndrome

Withe the recent announcement of the PS4 and its non backwards compatibility, maybe now we make a dent in our backlogs?

That is unless you plan to keep the PS3.

On the pre-release horizon for me:

Definites: GTA V; MLB The Show 13

      Probables: The Last Of Us

I always get rid of games, most of the time before I finish them.
But I made a promise to keep the few I have and beat them, while adding in games to the rotation only at a good price, i.e. Sleeping Dogs at 25 or less. Things like that.

I recently sold a few games I never even finished.
      Alone In The Dark: Inferno
      Saints Row 2
      Dead Island GOTY
      NBA 2K13
      AC III
      Folklore
Mass Effect Trilogy [i got it free with best buy credit, so figured I'd turn it into cash for the Show].

      All I have left is:

      Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition
      GTA IV Complete
      Red Dead Redemption GOTY
      Final Fantasy XIII-2

      Haven't beaten any yet.
Last finished game: The Walking Dead. And thats only because my girlfriend was enthralled with it.
Otherwise I'd be doing an episode every few months. lol

It's funny but yeah, I was thinking the same thing. With the PS4 coming the PS3 titles are thin. There are only 3-4 titles that I'm looking at getting this year so I see alot of time to finally finish up a few or start up ones I own but haven't gotten into yet. I do feel a bit of relief thinking I'm going to get a few in!

Re: Guilt, gaming and the "too many games" syndrome

I just don't get excited about games like I used to.

I play Battlefield 3 and the occasional Madden.

I have several games laying around, but I just don't feel like playing most of them anymore. I did just buy a VITA to go along with my PS3 and 360.. smh.

I think a lot of it is the lack of free time these days. I've been so busy with family, girl, work, Navy, etc. and I can't find much time to really get into a game. I have to play something I can pick up and play easily.

I'm still playing my OD NCAA 13 and have been playing Sleeping Dogs off and on since the beginning of December. I'm over 60% through the game and don't plan on buying anything until I finish.

The Show and The Last of Us are really the only games on my radar. I'm in wait and see mode on all other sports games his year.

Re: Guilt, gaming and the "too many games" syndrome

This is a great thread. I'm not alone! I especially like oDoggs rule of no sequels if original not beaten.

One of my biggest problems is I buy strategy games on steam sales and play just the tutorials. It's ridiculous.

              Right now my rotation is:
Ps3 god of war saga (on first one)
              The show12
              Ch2k8 ( it's that time of year)
Dirt 2 (no grid/2 until I get places with this one)
              NHL 13
              Retired: madden, ac3, nfs:mw

              Xbox mass effect
              Tw13
              Forza horizon
              Break from: borderlands2, sky rim

              Pc path of exile
              Star craft 2 campaign
              CivIV

Getting tw14 for sure unless the demo is dreadful, and will probably buy injustice pretty soon after release

I have held off on far cry 3 and dishonored due to my backlog and let psplus lapse for the same reason.

My backlog is too numerous to list but includes great titles like fight night, both batman games, soul calibur 4+5, ffxiii, dues ex etc

And I think I am close to the other side of this problem because I have sworn off grinding on cod mp or WoW so now my gaming is usually more purposeful
              Now playing
              too much
Nobody Saves the World, Total Warhammer3, NCAA14, ootp

Re: Guilt, gaming and the "too many games" syndrome

Well i ordered my first game since NHL 13 back last fall. It's Simcity for the PC. Got it on Amazon for $59 with $20 off my next game. I think in the past I've played the heck out of Simcity as it's a sandbox game one really can't get 'stuck' in which is what I like.

I am considering MLB The Show 13 as I didn't buy 12 so it'd be a 2 year leap for me. The only thing is with MLB in the past I've played it a LOT for about a month and then I never play it again. So I'm still on the fence.

I've also heard great things about Tomb Raider but I'm kind of scared to get it as I'm afraid it'll be one of those games I get, play a ton, get stuck somewhere and never pick back up again.

Oh and 8iron - I'm going to be working on beating God of War so I can get the new one, about 80% in, just need to finish it out! If I don't beat it then I'm going to keep to my word and not buy the new one no matter how much I desire it!!

Re: Guilt, gaming and the "too many games" syndrome

About this time a year ago, I thought my days as a gamer were coming to an end. I was pretty much down to two games I played consistently: Madden and MLB The Show.

Then, last May, my brother convinced me to try Batman. I wound up buying both Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. I'm about halfway through AA and haven't even started AC.

I got NBA 2K for Christmas. I got Tomb Raider in March and, thanks to OS, pre-ordered Injustice. In late March, thanks again to OS, I bought BioShock Infinite.

I'm trying to run dynasties on The Show 13, NBA 2K13 and (to a lesser extent) Madden 13. Still trying to complete BioShock (which I love). Tomb Raider has fallen on the back burner, even though I love it. Now I've added Injustice. And I've still got to get back to the Batman games. And I keep meaning to get back to Hot Shots Golf, WWE All-Stars and Gran Turismo 5. And, oh yeah, BioShock Infinite came with the original BioShock, so I've got that to knock out now too.

Well, glad you were able to find some games to keep you in the game, so to speak.

I did some spring cleaning and traded in a few games but yeah, I still have too many and nowhere near enough time to play them:

                      Main Gaming Rotation:
WWE 13 (360) - Still working through Attitude Era. Haven't touched any other mode.
NHL 13 (360/PS3) - Just play Exhibition games when the mood strikes.
                      NBA 2K13 (360) - NBA Today
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (PS3/Vita) - Working through MGS 3 at the moment.
MLB 13 The Show (PS3/Vita) - MLB Live and about to start Franchise.
MLB 12 The Show (PS3/Vita) - 28 games to go in my Mets Franchise. I am playing all 162.

And then we get to games I have started and play sporadically:
                      Uncharted: Golden Abyss (Vita)
                      FIFA Soccer (Vita)
Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational (Vita)
Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds (PS3)
                      Gravity Rush (Vita)
                      Madden 13 (Vita)
                      NCAA 13 (PS3)
Virtua Tennis 4: World Tour (Vita)
                      MLB 2K12 (360)
                      Batman: Arkham City (360)
                      Hotel Dusk: Room 215 (DSi)
                      Mario Kart (DSi)
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (DSi)
                      Currently Playing:
                      MLB The Show 25 (PS5)

Me too except I through NHL in there as well with maybe Tiger, but still of those four games I would buy, I would still barely play.

I'm through May in my show franchise and have played every game. My solution? Getting a second TV for the living room! Don't miss any live games which is what was killing me the most and keeps the lady happy at times as well.

I have "too many games" syndrome.

Bought Gears: Judgment a day after release, and I've played it maybe 4 or 5 times. NBA has been taking up all my time.

I'd like to play Judgment, as well as FIFA '13, but NBA just won't allow it. I'm addicted.

I also hardly touched Madden, and I'd like to play Halo 4 more than I have. I just don't have the time and when I feel like playing a game, it's usually NBA or WWE.

I have a huge backlog of games, and I'm probably going to add to it by purchasing Dead Space tomorrow. Always wanted to get into that series.

I used to have this problem...nice to know i wasn't alone.

I also used to waste so much time chasing achievements trying to 100% every game!

I must admit i'm a much happier and wealthier gamer and person once i let it all go and traded in all the games i was never going to get around to playing, kept NBA 2k,Skyrim and Battlefield 3

I now only buy games if i'm 100% going to play,I buy NBA 2k every year!(tho i might skip this year for the first time in 7 years!),and i make sure i do my research on the game before i purchase by looking at ratings and reading reviews!.I maybe only buy 1 or 2 games a year and of course NBA 2k!
...Kinda makes the game i buy the only choice i have if i decide to play, and also makes me way more exited about the game i just purchased once i cut down the massive intake of video games i was buying!...To give you an example of how bad i actually was i once brought Fifa 10 on release only to realise i don't,never have, probably never will like or understand Soccer lol!.

Im much more "wiser" when choosing my games these days and make sure the game is going to completely satisfy my purchase i do my research, watch plenty of footage on youtube and may even choose to hold off and buy at a cheaper price!...sure there has been a ton of games iv'e missed out on but im no longer wasting my time on games that arn't deserving (Fallout New Vegas Im looking at You!!!)

                                Games i've missed out on

                                -Transformers Fall of Cybertron

I found i was spending way to much time on Video Games aswell as the amount of tv shows and sport i watch every week,i was neglecting the important things in my life.

If Video Games are becoming a burden to you...Trade them in and let them go!...and just purchase a few a year complete them and enjoy them!
