Microsoft has excellent speech recognition and I look forward to seeing how Kinect works with that. I built "walter," a speech recognition test using macros in Vista. It's very impressive. I was even able to create an alarm clock so Walter wakes me with a selection from Pandora and briefs me on the weather.

Re: Kinect Reviews
My wife has been bugging me most of the weekend to get Kinect after seeing commercials and playing the demo at Best Buy. We picked it up today and the damn Kinect got stuck in the down position. Best Buy had already closed when we got home and got it set up that we have to wait till tomorrow to go and exchange. She was so excited to get this going and had the kids excited too.
It's weird, the camera moved up once and then down position. After that, it stayed in the down position no matter what kind of calibration that I tried. Thinking the motor might of had a heart attack.Comment

Re: Kinect Reviews
Played for a few hours over the weekend and I definately had fun with it. NOt sure it is something I am going to fire up alone and play but the time I spent with my 5 year old was worth every cent. He loves itActually...believe it or not from my physique... I'm a light eater - Clay T. ShaverComment

Re: Kinect Reviews
I have a 62" TV and my couch sits 9 feet away from it. So I have enough room for 1 player but maybe not 2.
My big concern is the height of the Kinect itself. I see Microsoft is saying it needs to be between 2 to 6 feet off of the ground. My TV stand would put it 19 inches off the ground. That may be enough as no one in my family is 6 feet tall, but I am not sure. And I am NOT gonna spend upwards of $300-$400 for a new TV stand. Putting the Kinect on top of the TV is not an option either; the top of the TV is very slender and there would be no way to keep it from sliding off without some sort of modification. That ain't happening either. So I am torn as to whether or not to even try the thing.NCAA: Michigan Wolverines

Re: Kinect Reviews
My wife returned the the one we got yesterday since the camera would not move up and down. This thing is very impressive to say the least and once the hybrid titles start coming out Kinect can really become an amazing piece of tech. I was so surprised that she was so interested in getting this and she has enjoyed it more than Wii so far.
We only played Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports, and the demos for both Dance Central and Your Shape. Kinect Adventures to me is fun for a pack-in, but I still feel it was the wrong collection to pack-in. I would have gone with Kinect Sports. Bowling, Tennis, Boxing are the games that sold the Wii.......MS and Sony, you dummies, might as well have copied the leader in motion gaming on the pack-in. LOL!
I moved the TV and stand back a little bit so now we are closer to having 8ft between the couch and TV. It helps, but still can't get 2 players in. I am thinking of placing the Sensor on a shelf in the back of the TV. That might work get a few more feet as I have read others did the same thing.
The voice recognition and hand navigation is great and I can't wait till its fully integrated with the dashboard. The new dashboard looks like it is tailored for this + I would love the Kinect Hub and Dashboard to just be one.
If I had to rate the 3 motion options right now, it would be
Kinect > Move > Wii Motion Plus......Kinect edges Move for me just because I feel like you are getting more of a workout, the voice recognition, and the hand navigation of the Kinect Hub.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 11-08-2010, 07:11 PM.Comment

Re: Kinect Reviews
Thanks for the review CaptZombie. The big downfall of the Kinect though (IMO) is no way to press buttons. I mean besides the "requiring 6 to 8 feet" aspect which has been well discussed.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: Kinect Reviews
They should be able to fix that easily, I would think.
I can't understand why they didn't do from the start where if you move your arm forward as if you were pushing an elevator button or something it acts like you're pushing a button. Makes more sense for selecting things than holding your hand in place for a couple seconds. It can certainly sense the arm/hand movement.Comment

Re: Kinect Reviews
They've said there will be games where a controller would be used in conjunction with the kinect. I think I seen that stated....Joshua:

Re: Kinect Reviews
I've read about the floor space needed which I have, but I am concerned about the height. Our 360 is in the basement and the ceilings are low. I can just about touch them standing, so if there is a lot of jumping around with arms up I'm afraid my room is no good.Comment

Re: Kinect Reviews
Last night, I played Kinect with my 6 and 8 year old kids. I have couple questions.
I set up my avatar the other day (new Xbox owner) and the sensor immediately recognizes me when I play Kinect Adventures. However, when either of them jump in to the game, it doesn't recognize them. Do I have to set them up with their own specific avatar? Also, if the sensor isn't recognizing them right away, should I place the sensor below my HDTV? As it is now, it sits perfectly on top of my tv as it's about 3 inches wide. Then again, I'm 6'4. We have a good 9-10 feet of gameplay space in the basement.PSN: sportdan30

Re: Kinect Reviews
Yes there are. You don't have to put arms up but you'll miss some points etc.. on certain games.Joshua:

Re: Kinect Reviews
My daughters each went through the Kinect ID steps and whenever they come in and it scans them it works. HOWEVER sometimes the avatar will switch but then switches back to them after current game is done. Little quirky but overall works well with recognizing them. Mine works well at the height shown in the picture above.Last night, I played Kinect with my 6 and 8 year old kids. I have couple questions.
