Essentially to offer a cheaper version (129.99) that doesn't have the 3D screen, but can take 3D pictures. Also no hinge (obviously). Probably more good for kids in theory.
I wouldn't be buying one, but not a terrible thing either.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Nintendo 3DS
It looks terrible, kind of like a doorstop.
Why are the buttons so high up? It would make sense if it had a single screen like the Vita, but with the 3DS your eyes are not looking at the screens in the same way. The slant the system is on is supposed to give you the same feeling of the DS/3DS because the top screen is not at the same angle as the bottom. However they even screwed that up because both screens are not at the same angle as the DS or 3DS. Not only that your hands will now be covering parts of the top and bottom screen due to the button placement. Also I imagine it would be tough to reach the bottom screen easily with your thumbs, like you could on the DS/3DS.
There's also no second analog stick (or the option of that accessory). You can't play monster hunter on that thing. There's no power save mode, speaker is mono- not stereo, battery life is not as good as 3ds, and no 3d (obviously).
My (not so serious) theory is that they're sick of hearing they should leave the home console business to focus on handhelds, so they're trying to demonstrate they can **** up their portables with the same focus and intensity.
Although, I suppose it isn't bad for parents who don't want to fork over the extra $50 for a 3ds for their kids.
The issue is that the 3DS is already super cheap to make (at launch the estimate was ~$100 in parts), all of the hardware is basic as hell. The screen change probably saves them $10, if that. Maybe a couple dollars more on the simpler packaging.
The 2DS will have a smaller margin per console, so if it starts cannibalising 3DS sales (surely it will, since there's no handheld competition) Nintendo is actually reducing its own profits...?Comment

Re: Nintendo 3DS
Would still buy the 3DS XL if I had the choice again. The clamshell case makes it way more portable than that things looks. While I don't think the 3D is all that great, some games do take advantage of it and the visuals look great. Even if its just things like speech bubbles sticking out from the background in Animal Crossing or Fire Emblem.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: Nintendo 3DS
Just bought a blue 3DS XL off craigslist for $100. Could not believe it LOL
Got 4 games with as well but they suck so will be trading those in toward either:
Animal Crossing
Mario & Luigi Dream Team
Not sure yet.Comment

I read that the 2DS is one screen with plastic over it, so they really cut costs down that way.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment
