    Re: Wii U Discussion

Picked up the Metroid Prime Trilogy and Kirby's Epic Yarn. Along with Xenoblade Chronicles, Super Mario Galaxy, The Last Story, and Zelda: Twilight Princess, I got a good slate of Wii games that will last me awhile.

I wish I could find the Fire Emblem game for Wii without spending an absurd amount.

Wife and I are really getting into the co-op Pikmin missions. The time limit and trying to get Golds on all the missions is tough!

...and I still haven't finished Lego Marvel yet.

Wii U unable to read discs now...this is turning into a headache. Thought consoles were supposed to be simple. Still waiting on the game pad to return too.

Great addition but I can't help but think this should have been in day one.

Apparently A Link the Past will be on the Wii U VC this week.

                  Re: Wii U Discussion

Nintendo should put Xenoblade Chronicles on the eShop and bring it to Steam.

The more I play, the more I'm impressed. It's not the "Best JRPG ever" or "Savior of JRPGs" hyperbole I've read on the Internet, but it's really good.

It blends East and West RPG elements very well, and has rare ambition and scale that just isn't common in the modern JRPG anymore. The scale of the environments are crazy; some approach MMO size. There's a lot of secrets, unique monsters, and the game rewards you with EXP for just exploring. There's even an achievement system and like pretty much everything else, rewards EXP. It's this constant positive reinforcement that just begs you to further explore. It doesn't hurt that the world is beautiful, intricate and feels alive, and the accompanying OST is amazing. Also, there's a dynamic day/night cycle and weather, unique changes to some environments at night, ability to adjust the time forward or backward by hour, fast travel, and save anywhere.

The battle system is somewhat like FFXII, but without Gambits it's more akin to MMORPG combat. It's more involved and not mindless at all though because positioning, timing, team composition, and party interaction during battle actually matter. Spamming arts is discouraged by having them be very different from each other and most have unique effects depending on how their used. Visions are a neat wrinkle, where sometimes you see a future attack an enemy will do and you have the ability to change that a number of different ways before a timer runs out. You can run up to the targeting member and warn them to pause the battle and choose their next action, preferably something that will/could change the future. There's a party gauge with 3 segments that fills up from landing crits and using arts effectively. At times you will get a burst affinity and timing the B button prompt correctly fills the gauge further and increases tension. Once filled you can issue a chain attack that pauses combat and turn-based style allows you to pick each party members next action. Segments of the party gauge are also needed for reviving fallen party members and warning for visions.

Fun battle system and HP auto-heals outside of battle and when you die, you just respawn at the last landmark. I like to switch the party up, especially the leader, as everybody plays vastly differently from each other.

There's a good bit of customization with different arts to choose and level up, skill trees, and you can link to other members to learn certain skills from them. Lots of loot and it's visible during both gameplay and cutscenes. There's gem crafting and slotting in gear. An affinity system between party members, even some NPCs have their own complete with stories. You can rebuild a town and invite NPCs to live there.

The cast is good and I dig the British VA. Story is similar to Xenogears and Xenosaga; interesting and complex, while being a little less melodramatic.

No bestiary, easy way to compare gear, and to many monotonous side-quests of "kill X number of enemy" or "collect X number of material" are my only issues. Thankfully for me the side-quests are easy to ignore because the game already has a ridiculous amount of content, but for completionists it would be tedious. It is nice that like 75% of quests you don't have to return to the quest giver. You just get an overlay that you completed a quest, your rewards, and then on you go.

I was already excited for Monolith Soft's X for Wii U, but I'm even more so after spending a good bit of time with Xenoblade Chronicles and that X looks similar and probably will feature online play.

I really want to get my hands on Xenoblade and especially the Metroid Trilogy. One glance at EBay and the insane prices for both and I hope original Wii games eventually make it over to the Virtual Console.

                        Re: Wii U Discussion

For me the Wii U is a perfect compliment to PC gaming. I haven't even considered going with an XBox One or PS4 for the next year at the earliest because I have all of the Nintendo 1st party exclusives and the start of the Virtual Console going with the Wii U. I'm a huge Nintendo Fanboy though so my mind was always made up. It is a great system that will be MUST have for local multiplayer when Smash Bros finally comes out.

Since you have a 3DS I may question you buying a Wii U. The Wii U is a fun system for the Nintendo exclusives. There will be no third party games you are going to buy given you having an XBox One. However, most of the great games available on the Wii U are similar to games on the 3DS and vice versa. The new Mario games, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, etc are all available on the 3DS and Wii U (or soon). I don't know how different they are.

I view the Wii U and 3DS as Nintendo options for those games but having both may be overkill and unncessary due to the strong overlap. Maybe someone with both a 3DS and Wii U could comment.

I have both and for me the WiiU is well worth it. Mainly for my case it's due to being able to play on TV or gamepad. My eyes aren't young so that's a major plus.

I also love the paint games and have it on 3DS but there's one now on WiiU that will be getting lessons added so again the huge screen = Major bonus.

The additional news that DS games are coming to the WiiU means I will probably use my 3DS less and less.
