    Xbox One

Something like putting in the disc activates your license and locks it to your system (XB1, PS4), and sends that data to X game company. You could then go in say settings and deactivate/unlock that key from your system and it sends that data to company as well so then you could resell the game or trade it in whatever you choose and it can keep the same key. It probably makes more sense in my head then on here lol

That way you could then play the game without the disc being in and could just download the game onto your HDD, once key is unlinked you lose access

      .

Internet is needed at this point if you want to play games that are not half broken. I can't imagine spending money on a console at this point without having internet. Would be an awful overall experience.

This is true, as it seems most game producers have used the ability to download patches to "fix" issues that should have been resolved prior to release, I guess it's the price we pay for the ability to get the types of games we get today with all the big budgets involved and time it takes to make many of these games nowadays

A form of this was all part of the original plan for the Xbox One but the internet spasmed over the prospect of checking in every 24hrs to validate licensing. Without an enforcement element the rest doesn't work.

Tony hawk 5 did not even have the game on disc. All it had was the skate park editor. Once the disc was inserted you were prompted for a dl that was the actual game and twice the size of what was on the disc. Pretty ridiculous.

I still like my idea. It doesn't require always online. No product keys. It just says every now and again, insert disc. Once you do it doesn't ask again for x period of time.

I agree with you, I think this is, by far, the best option for all of us

That disc idea wouldn't work because I could borrow my friend's copy of the game any time I wanted to validate. Each individual disc would need a license that would need to be activated, much like a console.

                    So, there is potential, actually.

IMO much like the rest of the platform has evolved I think the '24hr check-in' could have shifted to a random-ish several days as some more steps were implemented to mitigate sharing.

Why couldn't you just have the 24 hr check in as an option ? Those that want it turn it on and those that don't can just keep getting up and changing the disk every time they want to play a different game.

Yeah....though I wasn't against the always on from the beginning....they're pretty much always on now, especially with a lot of games not even having single player....

My consoles always have internet unless there's a problem with my service, which is rare.

As it was designed I think it was all or nothing, probably would have had to delay the console launch to pivot much more than they already did. The plans were much more than 24hr check-in, they were deploying point-of-sale infrastructure to participating retailers to manage used games and stuff and there are surely elements we never really hard app about (like game sharing).

I expect some hybrid of the original plans and what we have now next generation - from both Sony and MS.

                            Options are key.

And really the thing that made everyone go crazy was that the XB1 required Kinect at its launch if you remember and it was to be always on, which to most will say no big deal but it's not what a lot of people want a camera/microphone device always on in their home, nothing is as secure as they say with all the hacking these days. Microsoft is also notorious for sharing data with tons of third parties. It was more too, not just a requirement to validate game purchase as some seem to imply

If you guys don't mind me interjecting...

Microsoft deserves the reputation it has. As a company, we have done short-sighted things.

However, I can promise you that any sort of data uploading or sharing from Kinect was and never will happen on the Xbox One.

                                1) The amount of data we'd have to upload would be staggering. It would tank network performance, gameplay, etc.
                                2) It uses system resources, and we want to minimize the amount of resources Kinect uses. If we don't need to be sending power or CPU/GPU cycles to it, then we won't.
                                3) There are humans in Xbox, real people with real morals and ethics. We constantly debated features, and often cut things that were possible, saying "nah, that's too creepy. You've crossed the line from cool."

Agree that anything can be hacked and stuff, just wanted to jump in the Kinect privacy concerns.
