    Re: Xbox 720

These rumors I expect will put them on the wrong side of the PR fight for a while I think.

The latest video game news, reviews and features from the team at Edge Magazine. Subscribe here today.

No used games and requiring an internet connection will be a deal breaker for many. I can't tell you the last time I bought a used game or Redboxed anything, but that's a flexibility that's nice to have.

If both consoles do something similar though, would it really matter?

Also wonder if this would be an optional thing, or a requirement of all games.

Hard to see an always-on internet connection requirement really being part of the final product too.

I really hope that it's just a rumor because requiring an internet connection to play games is ****ing ridiculous.

The no second hand games and needing the internet just to play the games is way to much. If these rumors end up been true for both systems. Expect a lot of bash lash from fans and for their sales to plummet starting from the moment they announce it. Which will be Feb.20 of this month for Sony announcement. This will create a big bash lash I'm for sure. Mark my words if this info turns out to be true. Doesn't seem MS or Sony has denied any of this so far. So it has me worried right now.

I have no real issue with the "No-Used Games" as I think in teh long run in benefits the industry as a whole and the game developers, but requiring you to have Internet access to even play is just stupid.

More than a few times I have taken my Xbox on the road with me to play in hotels, so this would knock this out in most cases.....Unless there is built in wireless adapters? Which I would actually assume there is.....So maybe this is not a big deal.....as long as it works like a comp without alot of hoops.....

Remember just 2 weeks ago when everyone was panicking over the PS4 having this same rumor?

            Yeah, me too.

It's all rumors till we have anything concrete. Sony has their conference in 2 weeks, we'll know more than.

How does it help the industry as a whole. IF MS and Sony killed off used games. It would kill places like gamestop and it would put companies like gamefly and redbox out of business and a lot people would lose their jobs. Also a lot don't want to pay 70 for a game that might be good or may not. This would also prevent Video stores from renting out used games to customers who don't want to buy them or want to try out a certain game before buying. You have to factor in a lot things with this. MS and Sony would be making a big mistake forcing people to buy new games and not been able to buy used game. Not everyone has money to go out by a new game every time. MS and Sony better think long and hard about this. Cause I can bet you that if these rumors are true. There will be a back lash from the fans.

Without used games I think you see the price of New games actually come down as the "supply and demand" market will push retailers to have sales, promotions, etc....

And as much as I would feel for the employees off Gamestop, the actual company is a blood sucking leach on the industry.

Wouldn't really affect me at all. I don't play used games and my xbox is always connected to the internet. The only thing that bothers me is that I wouldn't be able to sell the games I don't want anymore. THey wouldn't probably need to lower the price of games.

I would not count on that. Also I do a lot of business with GS all the time. They give good deals on used games. While they might a little low on the price on buying back games. I still think GS is a good store.

No used games = I buy less games and pick only the ones I really REALLY want. So its a lose lose for me and them.

The thing is when you buy used games it only benefits GS or whoever you buy the used game from, no one else.

The actual game developers, get nothing from used game sales...

All you need to do is look at the PC market. You can't sell or trade in anything but you can find games much cheaper than you can on consoles. I haven't paid full price for any game on PC. I bought Far Cry 3 2 weeks after it came out for $30 less than I would if I bought it for 360 or ps3.

So are these things only going to be sold at The Sharper Image? They're really limiting their customer base, if true.

                                Re: Xbox 720

Redbox isn't going anywhere, they tacked on games remember, rather than being primarily gaming-based like Gamefly and Gamestop. Even Gamestop has been preparing for this eventuality, selling PC games and buying the Impulse digital distribution platform from Stardock.

I guess I'd wonder what the positive side of this is, because the negative connotations and assumptions are certainly not the entire story.

                                - Mandatory demos (or time limited full game trials) for all games?

                                - Able to rent games over Xbox Live? VOD style... download and no charge until you actually play it? (games requiring a 50GB Blu-Ray disc kinda scare me when it comes to this area)

                                - The ability to sell back digitally acquired games? Some system allowing you to do this with retail purchases through your console would be interesting too.

Wouldn't be surprised if this isn't just another trial balloon, to gauge reaction prior to Sony's presser.

In order to do this you need clear consumer benefit/divends from this restriction, or there's no overcoming the negative PR. This will exponentially ring truer if only 1 console implements this kind of thing.
