The point is that whether we like it or not, the consoles are now bigger than playing games on them. That was their motive to begin with, and most people have signed on for that.

This is a for-profit business, and companies like MS are going to try and arrange things so that profit can be made by them and various forms of entertainment represented on their console (whether that be games, movies, TV etc.)

If they follow through with these rumors, that very well means that they looked at the info and that info says that the recourse of going "online only" won't be much of a big deal at all.

Well, in that case just look at the uproar it caused over diablo 3. Same type of thing being with having to have internet for a single player game.

This will have negative effects. EAs DRM led Spore to being the most heavily pirated game in history. Not because it was a game, but because the impositions EA imposed.

It wasn't just a DRM check for spore, you were only allowed a certain number of installs from that CD. That devolves into a whole case of if you buy the game do you actually own it. Gaming has some shady practices going on, more so now than ever. It will have to come to a head at some point if we are to grow the industry unfortunately, bow that the money involved grows bugger and bigger.

Its a shame, and I will vehemently defend how I feel on this because video games (and video games as an art form) are a passion of mine.

Always online is just a rudimentary form of DRM. It was never stated to be so with D3 and Blizzard was reticent on the topic, but Morhaime came out and said as much in a letter caused by the uproar.

The new Sim City can only be played with an online connection too.

Then they better start providing free service like Sony because people dont care for Onlive type services from what I can see.

Xbox Live has grown in major ways since its launch. Onlive, is completely different. I actually wanted to see Onlive be successful. To me it's something we should embrace.

At some point, we have to ask ourselves why we are so resistant to this concept of "always on" consoles. The only resistance I see is with what some are saying about DRM. That is valid.

But, I get the feeling some are also being a bit stubborn with this.

All of you aren't, but 10s of millions are. If this ends up being true that's their market, and it's growing not contracting. If you aren't there now you will be one day. MS is making over $1b/year from Live, there's their market, their justification.

It's also not so extreme, I'm not an "online junkie" but just play an online CCM (with 5 others) a couple of times per week and use Netflix every few days, enjoying a smattering of other benefits less frequently.

                      Re: Xbox 720

I'm not getting too worked up because rumors are just rumors until we get some sort of official announcement and legit proof.

I don't mind GameStop as much as some people do. I don't trade much in there, but if I was, no one would have a proverbial gun to my head forcing me to do so. It's a business.

I could get over buying only new games relatively easy. Most of the games I play require an online pass anyways (Battlefield, Madden, etc.) Having to be connected to the internet would just be stupid. If both consoles went that route I suppose I would eventually have to cave, but if it's one or the other, there's no way I'm going with the console that requires it.

My internet has been acting up for the past week until a tech. came and worked on it a few days ago. If I couldn't use my xbox or ps3 in that time period, I would have been completely pissed off. I was still able to play some Madden, Minecraft, or some other game until I could get my fix and get on Battlefield again.

The other thing that would bother me about required internet connection and matching purchased games to consoles would be the inability to just take a game over to someone's house and play or let friends borrow games. My friend has had his 360 for years and just recently got a PS3, so I've been letting him borrow some PS3 classics. On the other hand, I just got a 360 after owning a PS3 for years. He's letting me borrow some 360 classics I haven't played..

Again, I could get over having to purchase new games, but It would still be a purchase killer if one console had it and the other didn't. I don't know how it's possible for one to do it without the other.

I just don't get the "online jumkie" comment. Why is it that we are so closed to be online with our console? Were people like this when we switched over to cable tv from 3 channels on antenna?

It's like we don't want to admit we like being online. Our TVs are online..our phones are online...I just don't get it.

This is not cable and if this is their idea of a game system i don't need that

I can watch Netflix from my tv roku or apple tv so that means little.

I'm booty closed to online but let's so acting like sp gaming isn't a staple of these systems.

Ignoring that it's one reason why so many games rook a crap this gen anyway

I hope used games don't go away. I buy a lot of used games, a lot of games I would have ever tried.

If games were say $40 new, that would soften the blow.

As far as being online when playing, so stupid. If Internet is down or I move and won't get Internet at new place for a few weeks, I am screwed and can't play.

Funny thing is, both of those hypotheticals apply to the cable analogy above too.

If you consider how frequently either of them happen you'd probably realize neither is Microsoft's or Sony's problem or a reason not to do this.
