If I had a standalone Blu-Ray player, I would probably sell my ps3 too.

      Re: Xbox 720

I haven't played a PS3 game since the Show I believe except a couple PSN games.
It pretty much is my BR player. Same could be said for my 360 as I've been PC gaming for the most part except for Madden. I think I only own about 4 or 5 PS3 games right now.
I only really own about 10 360 games also. Been thinning out over the past few months.
STEAM sales got me good though

For next gen it's all 720 as I am only going 1 system and I simply prefer the XBOX over the PS3. So the $ I get for the PS3 will go towards teh 720.

        Re: Xbox 720

        New VG24 Rumor: PS4 -1.84 teraflops, 4GB RAM; Xbox 720 - 1.23TF, 8GB RAM

More RAM in one vs. Faster RAM in the other.......should be interesting with these rumors. 3GB for OS on the Xbox makes me think that Kinect will be a huge part of the next system and that it will be a resource hog. The cable box rumors could be true.

Developer sources, speaking after meetings at CES, have told VG247 that the next PlayStation, codenamed Orbis, will have a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops. Conversely, the next Xbox, codenamed Durango, will be able to achieve 1.23 teraflops.

If true, these numbers mean PlayStation 4 will have a 33% raw, computational power advantage over Xbox 720.

While PS4 will have greater grunt that 720, however, the Microsoft machine has significantly more RAM at 8Gb, we’ve been told. Our source said that 3Gb is reserved for the OS, apps and security, leaving 4-5Gb for games.

Orbis will have 4Gb of RAM, said our source, of which 1Gb will be reserved for for OS, security and apps, leaving some 3Gb for games.

Both machines will supposedly have have the ability to read 100Gb Blu-ray discs.

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the PS3 also technically better than the 360 in quite a few ways? That didn't really help this gen when you look at so many games that are better on 360 than PS3 heads up....

I could be wrong but I think the way it broke down that the PS3 had a better CPU (cell), but the 360 had a better GPU that was able to do AA, but put together the PS3 was more powerful? I'm pretty sure I'm off somewhere.

              Re: Xbox 720

Using FLOPS to measure the difference in power is difficult without knowing the full architecture of both machines. Theoretically, the PS3 has twice the FLOPS of the 360, but in practice the differences in architecture and the actual number that is programmable make the two machines pretty close in the end.

Cell SPUs where Sony's ace. They more than made up for the deficiencies of RSX compared to Xenos. I don't believe the PS3' strengths lend themselves to multiplatform development, while weaknesses (less dev friendly environment, larger OS footprint resulting in less memory compared to 360) are why you saw so many multiplatform games on 360 edging out their PS3 counterparts. It was much worse early on, but now the differences are fairly minuscule.

This shouldn't be a problem with both having AMD chipsets. The RAM differences could throw a wrench in that, but that could go either way. I expect the two will be close again, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, once we're past the numbers wars, we'll get to what really matters, the games.

Microsoft hosting event on Jan. 24, will they reveal the next Xbox?

Microsoft is hosting an event on January 24th that some people believe may be where they formally unveil their next Xbox console, or other exciting devices. The event will take place in Mountain View, California. If they do reveal something Xbox-related at this event it will be more Apple-style than any of their past console announcements. The event will take place between 5:30pm to 8:30pm PST.

                    Here’s Microsoft’s invitation:

"Please join us for an exclusive open house on January 24th in the new Microsoft Technology Center in our Silicon Valley Campus in Mountain View. We will be showcasing some exciting devices, including the Xbox 360, Kinect, Surface, Windows 8 on an 82” touchscreen from Perceptive Pixel, and our newly launched SmartGlass application. We’ll have leading engineers from our hardware, manufacturing, and software teams on-hand to speak about what Microsoft has in store for the future.

As a very special bonus, Alex Kipman, one of the revolutionary minds behind the Kinect, will be delivering our keynote about the future vision for Microsoft and how we are working to join together software and hardware into meaningful, exciting hardware devices in the years to come.

This will be a great opportunity to network with engineers at Microsoft, and get your hands on some of our newest devices AND to enter a drawing to walk away with one! We hope you’ll join us!"

Valkyria Chronicles, 3D Dot Heroes, GTAIV Complete and Afrika are the ones I know I'm keeping.
If it wasn't for the Madden league I'd trade in my 360... even though I'm a little attached to it since it's the launch 360. lol

Nothing is called "The Windows Phone- 8" that I've seen.
The phones themselves use the phone company name.
So it will be an XBOX "Insert name here" with Windows 8 just like the Nokia Lumia 710, Windows 8 phone.

Either way... I'm ready for the new XBOX. Call it Spunky if that's what they want to call it.

                            From VGleaks

As we promised during the weekend in the next weeks we will unveil Durango and Orbis. All the technical info you want to know about the next generation machines from Sony and Microsoft.

The first one is Durango. In this article we present the system overview with the general components and some technical details about them.

                            How are durango components connected?

Here you can see the Durango system block diagram:

                            Durango Arquitecture

Let’s check what’s inside the box:

                            CPU:

                            - x64 Architecture

                            - 8 CPU cores running at 1.6 gigahertz (GHz)

                            - each CPU thread has its own 32 KB L1 instruction cache and 32 KB L1 data cache

                            - each module of four CPU cores has a 2 MB L2 cache resulting in a total of 4 MB of L2 cache

                            - each core has one fully independent hardware thread with no shared execution resources

                            - each hardware thread can issue two instructions per clock

                            GPU:

                            - custom D3D11.1 class 800-MHz graphics processor

                            - 12 shader cores providing a total of 768 threads

                            - each thread can perform one scalar multiplication and addition operation (MADD) per clock cycle

                            - at peak performance, the GPU can effectively issue 1.2 trillion floating-point operations per second

High-fidelity Natural User Interface (NUI) sensor is always present

                            Storage and Memory:

                            - 8 gigabyte (GB) of RAM DDR3 (68 GB/s)

                            - 32 MB of fast embedded SRAM (ESRAM) (102 GB/s)

                            - from the GPU’s perspective the bandwidths of system memory and ESRAM are parallel providing combined peak bandwidth of 170 GB/sec.

                            - Hard drive is always present

                            - 50 GB 6x Blu-ray Disc drive

                            Networking:

                            - Gigabit Ethernet

                            - Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct

                            Hardware Accelerators:

                            - Move engines

                            - Image, video, and audio codecs

                            - Kinect multichannel echo cancellation (MEC) hardware

                            - Cryptography engines for encryption and decryption, and hashing

                              Re: Xbox 720

DF chip in on the leaked Durango specs.

First up, let's deal with the elements of the spec we definitely know to be true: Durango features an eight-core CPU from AMD running at 1.6GHz, just like its upcoming next-gen PlayStation competitor - Orbis. As we explained last week, these are based on AMD's new PC technology, Jaguar - built for the entry-level laptop and tablet market. The initial PC Jaguar CPUs are configured in a quad-core arrangement - this doubles for both next-gen consoles.

In the case of Durango, the CPU is married up with 8GB of DDR3 memory, working in concert with 32MB of what is dubbed "ESRAM" - fast work RAM connected directly to the GPU. The two pools of memory operate in parallel, and while we haven't confirmed overall bandwidth, the leak's 170GB/s throughput certainly seems plausible. Also interesting about the RAM set-up is that the ESRAM isn't merely connected to the graphics core as is the case with the Xbox 360's 10MB of eDRAM - in Durango, it's hooked up to the northbridge (the interconnect between all major internal components), meaning it offers general access to other components in addition to the graphics core.

The leak also offers confirmation of last week's story that the new PlayStation Orbis graphics core appears - at face value - to be significantly more powerful than the GPU in Durango. Our sources suggest that the new PlayStation offers up 18 Radeon GCN compute units at 800MHz. The leak matches older rumours suggesting that Durango features only 12, running at the same clock speed. Bearing in mind the stated peak performance metrics in the leak, there is a clear deficit between the 1.23 teraflops offered by Durango, and the 1.84TF found in Orbis.

The leak also addresses the three mysterious hardware accelerator modules we mentioned last week in our Orbis piece. We find one of them covering audio (including echo cancellation tech for Kinect), while another appears to be an accelerated hardware video encoder - this is interesting in that we also find that the new information suggests an HDMI input as part of the design, not just an output. In theory then, users could record their TV shows direct from set-top boxes, or import their camcorder footage directly onto Durango. It's a remarkable inclusion, for sure, suggesting that Microsoft is indeed investing heavily in the media credentials of the device. The final hardware module is the most mysterious, named simply "Data Move Engines" for which there is no additional data supplied.

Other elements of the spec throw up some positive surprises too. Kinect appears to have its own dedicated input, suggesting that the problems introduced by using USB on the Xbox 360 could be mitigated. The fact there is an input at all suggests that the sensor will remain a separate and distinct unit that attaches to the console. The USB ports themselves are upgraded to the 3.0 standard - good for moving media files about and for high levels of bandwidth to game data. A large hard drive is included as standard (our sources suggest a 500GB minimum) while a 6x Blu-ray drive is also being mooted, which supports 50GB dual-layer discs. Networking is achieved with a fast gigabit Ethernet port, with both WiFi and WiFi Direct support.

So the question of the hour is, just how accurate is the information? Based on our communications with the leaker, the data appears genuine - the only real question is how recent it is. The proof presented by the source suggests that the data is at most nine months old: factoring in how long it takes to create a console, the chances are that there will not be many changes implemented since then.

Really hope the HDMI input is true.
