If Microsoft cheaps out on the GPU, then I'll be waiting and may not buy at all if more games come to PC as they think will happen.

Doing some Googling, Data Move Engines sound like they could be used to take some load off of the CPU and GPU, maximizing efficiency, and keeping peak throughput. May also just be in dev kits to give devs an HSA-esque environment until AMD can deliver final silicon.

Maybe they will, maybe they won't, but this could be 2005 all over again where comparing raw numbers is to vague to go on. Like I said, it isn't as simple as just comparing FLOPS without knowing full architectures.

If nobody wants to take my word for it, maybe you will take an SCEA Tools and Tech Programmer's:

      http://forum.beyond3d.com/showpost.p...&postcount=262

I don't think there's any amount of special sauce in Durango that can bridge a 6 CU and 600 GFLOP gap.
latching onto individual figures is not a useful way to understand performance differences.
OK lets say that everything else in the hardware is identical for a second, so you have a 50% performance difference, but only in ALU limited situations.
When I render shadows, I'm ROP (or rathe Z-Fill) limited, if my shaders are texture heavy, the ALU's sit idle and wait on memory, on current PC GPU's if the vertex workload is dominant, for the most part they grossly underutilize the ALU's.
So what percentage of the time do the extra ALU's actually help?
If it's 40% it's a 20% performance difference, if it's 80% it's a 40% difference I would guess it will end up being closer to the first than the second.
If 720 has more ROPs (and enough associated bandwidth) or a larger register pool and can hide more latency, then it gets more of that difference back, because it runs other portions of the frame faster.

Now I'm not suggesting it's "faster" or for that matter "slower", I'm saying it's just one aspect of a design.
      http://forum.beyond3d.com/showpost.p...ostcount=17482

FWIW I don't think it comes down to FLOPS at all in anything but a "you need more than you have now" way.
The design of the memory sub system is much more important IMO, coupled with number of ROPS.
On PC Cards to day the ALU's are grossly underutilized for a lot of the work, particularly processing vertices.
Any single number people latch onto is always going to be a gross over simplification.

That would lead me to believe they want to integrate Cable into the loop...

I'd guess similar to Google TV, where your cable box passed through the Google TV box, so then the Xbox 720 could be always on (in theory)....

I'd be interested in something like that...

Yup, have retired the Revue because it was slow, but I'd love an always on powerful STB of a console. HDMI pass through would be awesome

Rumour: Durango to be called "Xbox", MS to make X-Surface portable gaming system

The Xbox 720 will not be called that when it is finally announced. Instead, Microsoft will be reverting to the name of its first games console released 11 years ago, Xbox.

In addition, it will be seen as a hub to a number of devices to carry an "X" branding, one of which will be the much-rumoured 7-inch gaming tablet, which Pocket-lint has learnt will be called X-Surface, not Xbox Surface as previously thought.

The X-Surface will not be a Windows 8 or Windows RT device, we have been told by a tipster very close to the project who, naturally, wishes to remain anonymous. Instead, it will be a standalone portable gaming system. On launch, we are informed, it will be able to access the games, music and video hubs of the new Xbox, but will not have any apps of its own. It will not have a desktop as part of its operating system, rather be entirely focused on playing full console-quality games.

Although there are no technical specifications touted, we have also been told that the X-Surface tablet has much improved hardware over a Surface RT. With the source claiming that he/she "witnessed Unreal Engine 3 demos running at a solid 60fps".

There are also unconfirmed rumours that the X-Surface will have a proprietary 2.4GHz wireless protocol for compatibility with Xbox 360 controllers and, it is said, future control devices.
One incorrect former rumour about the new Xbox that has been quashed by the tipster is that one of the cores will be dedicated to running the operating system. The OS will have a similar look to Windows 8, with moveable tiles, but won't be literally using that software. It will also require two-cores to run, as it will remain active in the background in order to provide full multitasking functionality. "Very much akin to Nintendo's offerings on 3DS and Wii U - but on a far larger scale," explained the source.

A couple of the features of multitasking explained to us include video calling in games (with users able to determine which corner of the screen to place the feed), and the ability to take screengrabs to save to hard drive or SkyDrive.
Mock design, looks really cool of a rebranding.....

Horrible Idea to just call it Xbox. It would be a disaster for search engines and looking up games since the original xbox is called xbox as well.

I disagree with this. The problem with the U is that it looks exactly like the Wii, it uses the same controllers, and best of all, Nintendo decided not to market their new console that much. Of course it has created confusion in the market place.

When searching iPod or iPhone in search engines, did it cause a disaster for Apple with search engines? That is why there is good SEO (Search Engine Optimization) that will be done so there aren't issues with the searches. It just comes down to a rebranding of their product like what Sony might be doing with their next console by possibly not naming giving it a "4" in the name.

I'm somewhere in the middle, I don't really care but also see the previous point. Search for Xbox now and you get Amazon's listing of old Xbox games as one of the top results for example.

Search engines do pretty well with relevance, so it's not like it'd be some catastrophe.

Not too interested in the tablet, I have a Windows 8 tablet already, unless those are capabilities coming to all Windows 8 tablets . Guess I'm just happy isn't talked about being included. Would rather have the same/similar controllers, rather than fractured 'this game uses the tablet, this one uses controllers' kind of experience.

I still like Xbox Infinity which when reversed it is the number 8. We will probably know soon enough as to what they are doing. So many rumors going around, you have to wonder if they will want to try and squash these sooner than later.

If you mean not making it Playstation 4 and instead just naming it Playstation then thats just as dumb. Why not just start naming all windows just windows or not add a year to vehicles. It will make it a pain all around if they reuse names. If they want to do the whole xbox name then just make it Xbox 3. Im not a fan of reusing the names, just my opinion.

About time someone got serious about tablets as a legit gaming source, and if it can be used for other apps, even better.

I travel alot, so being able to play my 2kxx Association on the road or plane just sounds awesome.

I like what I hear from the MS camp.

I hear where your coming from. I thought adding the 8 or Infinity would work to keep it inline with rest of their products.
