Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
I am so stoked to get my gaming pc that I have lost all the joy of wanting to even turn on my ps4 and xb1
I am waiting for my income tax to arrive and getting set to buy my pc but only thing that has me worried is getting a desktop or gaming laptop and reason I say this is because i really have no space for a desktop or even desk right now and that would be more cost out of pocket along with the pc am looking to buy not having a keyboard or mouse.
thoughts?Comment

Gaming laptops cost more and you typically get less. You also can't upgrade them down the road. Unless you absolutely have no room or need the portability then I would get a desktop.
You'll want to get a mouse either way. Track pad gaming is a special kind of awful. I also can't use laptop keyboards either.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
A 980m (the best laptop gpu) is a lot worse than your 2k PC build. Like miles worse. I'd wait until the next gpu's drop this summer/fall before even thinking about spending that much on a laptop.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
$750 difference for a Blu ray player and the 6700k and DDR4 with a slightly bigger SSD? If you have the money the first one is fine but the second one is more than good enough as well. SSD's are getting cheaper and cheaper. You can add a bigger one later if you want.

thanx man. Yea those perks not good enough for me to bump that kind of dough. Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
I know that Pascal is going to be a big bump, but it's still no guarantee that the flagship cards will be out this summer, I'm still thinking Q4 of this year.
I just bought a Gigabyte P35xV5 with 980M, and it performs really well. Will I upgrade when pascal hits? Maybe, probably not. This laptop will perform well for me for the next couple of years, and I'll still net a pretty decent return when I turn around and sell it. It's thin, lightweight, and best of all, mobile. I can take it with me at the last second without hassle. I can lay in bed while on business and crank up whatever game I want, have my wireless 360 controller, and game away.
Granted, desktops have more power for the buck, but I'm beyond happy with having a system I can take with me wherever I want. Mine was just shy of $1700.Twitter - WTF_OS

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
I'm think of upgrading a couple of components in my PC in the next couple months. I'm currently running this build that I built back in 2011 or 2012 (can't remember the year lol).
Mobo: Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3
CPU: 2500k overclocked to 3.6GHZ running a coolmaster heatsink
GPU: XFX Radeon 6870
RAM: 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws
SSD: OCZ 120GB
HDD: WD Black 1TB
I'm mainly looking to upgrade the GPU and heatsink as well as possibly adding a second SSD. I was thinking of upgrading the CPU to the 4690K but since it's an LGA1150 socket I would have to upgrade the mobo as well. Upon looking at in-depth stats between the 2500K and 4690K I didn't really see a benefit to upgrading.
As for the GPU, I've been eyeing the R9 280X and the GTX 970. I mainly looking for a card that can run most games on high settings at 1080p with a high FPS. Does anybody have experience and/or opinions on those cards? As for the heatsink I want go with a liquid cooled option and I've been checking out the NZXT Kraken X61.
Any opinions would be appreciated.Xbox LIVE GT: oALEXtheGREATo

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
I have a 280X. Run everything pretty much on high settings. Just make sure you dont have a weak CPU
The only battle I have is UPLAY. That program is so messed up I'll never buy another ubisoft game on it ever again.
It just crashes all the time for who knows what reason. I know its not the card itself, its Uplay... err NoPlay
Can't speak for the 970 but I'd certainly get an intel CPU if at all possible to pair with any card.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Can't go wrong with either one. The 970 is better optimized for heat/noise but has that 3.5 Vram problem. The 2500k is definitely still good for now and I have no idea about liquid cooling other than it is a pain in the ***.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
So I'm going to be building a gaming PC with my tax returns (FINALLY). I've got about $700 budgeted (not counting gaming monitor, I'm selling my XBOX One to go toward that). Do you guys think that a built PC at $700 will run basically anything out now at 1080p with a good framerate? For comparison's sake, would, say, The Witcher 3 run at 1080p with high settings and a solid framerate?
Also, concerning controllers. I plan on using a keyboard and mouse unless it's a game designed moreso for a controller, and in that case, what do you guys recommend? I see the Steam controller is out, but it looks REALLY awkward. Do all games support the wired XBOX 360 controller? I see that they are only about $30 on Amazon, and as long as all games support it, I'm leaning that way.Comment

I play all of my games with a 360 controller. Most multi-plat games have full controller support. Some games only have partial controller support otherwise, just depends on the game.So I'm going to be building a gaming PC with my tax returns (FINALLY). I dont know about the witcher but you're probably looking at a low to mid tier machine with that money. I started off with a system that cost that much but upgraded over a couple of years.
Are you going nvidia or amd?Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Well, I did find a "Next Gen Exterminator" build on r/pcmr for $650 after rebates, and it looks awesome. They claim it can run basically anything out there at high to ultra and a good framerate. I may just go with that build.I play all of my games with a 360 controller. Most multi-plat games have full controller support. However, I'm a little lost on monitors. I was looking on Amazon, and found a 24 inch $300 BenQ (RL2455HM) on sale for $180, but I also found another 24 inch BenQ (GL2460HM) for $129. Looking at comparisons online, most claim that there isn't much of a difference.
Does anyone have either of these monitors that can chime in?Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
$700 build is very capable and will comfortably outpace either of the consoles.
I have the same processor as that Next-Gen Exterminator build and went with a lower mid-range card in the GTX 960 4GB (actually 3GB) and an SSD. The R9 390 or GTX 970 listed would be a lot more capable and last you years at 1080p. I'm waiting for the next round of GPUs for a bigger upgrade.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment
