What the hell is the Steam Lunar New Year Sale!?!? I've never heard of this before and I've been around for 12 years!

Good to hear. I'd be going with the 390 I think. Glad to hear that it will last a long time.

I'm pretty much settled on that build, as it seems pretty well regarded around reddit. I'll probably start ordering the parts early next week, and hopefully will order one of those two BenQ monitors I mentioned today or tomorrow. Just need to read up on both monitors a bit more. I'm thinking I'll just go with the GL2460, as the reviews don't seem that far apart, and it's $50 cheaper.

Bah, of all things when it finally comes to building my first gaming PC, I didn't think I'd be hung up on the monitor .

I don't know why they are doing the sale(Lunar new year deals with Chinese calendar I believe), but I took the sales to get more games I'll likely never play.

also bought some games I already owned, but had disc version and no idea where they went.

Really love this overhaul they gave the Radeon control panel (now called Crimson). It's the main thing allowing me to play XCOM 2 at a stable framerate (by locking it to 30 because even at minimal settings, I cannot reach 60 FPS on this game).

It's pretty bad that the only part of my PC build I've actually purchased so far is my graphics card (XFX R9 390), yet here I am, about to buy a bunch of Steam games on sale for when my PC is ready to go.

I now know why Steam can be quite the "problem" for PC gamers.

Maybe you guys can help me out. There was a game a little while ago that was made by a small dev team (maybe it was just one person) on PC. It was basically a top down game where you had settlers and had to survive the seasons. It looked really cool but the name escapes me. Anyone remember it?

                    Banished?

In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland. The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource.

So I'm closing in on FINALLY beating Shadow of Mordor. 13 story missions in, 11 more to go.

I also started State of Decay Year One Edition (Courtesy of Candy) and wow I forgot how cool this zombie survival game is. So much going on it can be a bit overwhelming at first.

Next on my list after beating Shadow of Mordor will be <s>Mad Max</s> Sleeping Dogs!!

I loved Sleeping Dogs. Was 40+ hours into it and lost my save and never attempted to start over because I was so bummed. I might now that I'm over it and you reminded me of it haha. Such a good game.

I bought Ark on sale and I love it. I didn't know what to expect, but it's blown me away. I am having a blast in it with hardcore mode on. PvE is REAL which is huge for me. Great great game. It works so well for an early alpha too. If only other games were as polished *cough* Rainbow Six *cough*.

So I've been getting a slight issue and wanted to run it by some of you to see what you might think is the issue.

                              Specs
                              I5 4690k
                              16 gig ram
                              Radeon 290 GPU
                              AS Rock Fata1ty MB

So the other night while playing Shadow of Mordor I started having frame rate issues. I run everything on ultra but always stayed over 60 fps even with large combat sequences. Out of the blue I'd get quick frame stutters which would fall into the 20s, but would only last 1 sec at most then jump back up. This would happen though often enough that it made it distracting (once every 3 to 5 min).

So I opened up MSI Afterburner while playing to see if I could pinpoint an issue. This is what I found

                              1) CPU Temps looked fine....low 30s idle low 50s full load

                              2) GPU looked good except during the pause you could see where the GPU Clock would drop in speed for no reason.

                              3) Everything else looked normal, GPU temp good, fan speeds good, memory solid, even PSU rails solid

So I'm drawing a blank of what is causing this.

                              My first thoughts were

                              1) I just upgraded to Windows 10 from 7. I said I wasn't going to do it but the damn box aggravated me enough. Since I've done that it's been a nightmare trying to fix all the issues it caused. Drivers not loading on boot up, reinstalling Win 10 drivers (sound, Video card), plus a multitude of program issues. OBS now has a hooking issue which is tied to my sound card. If I "preview" a scene then stop the preview my Sound card will use 30 to 40% of my CPU. If I don't preview then it will stay at 0% and never be an issue. So luckily I figure that one out lol.

                              2) Delete GPU drivers and reinstall win 10 version. Completely removed everything to do with catalyst and AMD, then reinstalled current drivers. This did not fix the problem.

My first thought was the GPU is throttling for some reason. First of all, I don't know why it would have started out the blue and second of all I had zero issues before the upgrade to windows 10. I'd fold my hand and do a fresh install but I really don't want to......like really really don't want to!

So with all that said, what do you think is causing this issue?

Edit: Decided to do some googling on this issue after I posted this. Looks like upping the power usage in catalyst control center (I believe it called something different now), has fixed others having this same issue.

So then that brings me to another point, why did this start 6 months after I've had the card? Could it be a power supply issue, a windows 10 issue, or simply a combination of both? A failing PSU is scary.

I will test this tonight to see if this fixes my issue but if it does, its slightly concerning why out of nowhere my power would be suffering.

Edit Edit: So after some more reading on this.....it sounds like my PSU is failing. I've had pretty much all the common issues others have faced with this issue. USB devices suddenly losing connection, GPU throttling from lack of power, devices failing to boot, and PC just failing to perform how it normally has. So I'm running HW Monitor Pro on it this even under gaming load to see if my rails are fluctuating when stressed. If that turns out to be true, then new PSU will be ordered tomorrow

Power supply is over 7 years old.....purchased on November 2008 sooo this seems likely the issue.

Yep, it seems like the PSU is going. A newer GPU can expedite the PSU failing, especially if it's an older PSU. I'd say that's your problem. Glad you've got it narrowed down.
