Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

All of the parts are on order and scheduled to arrive by Friday for my first build:

    Intel i5 4460 3.2 GHz quad core
    XFX Radeon R9 390 GPU
    MSI H81M-E34 Micro ATX Motherboard
Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case
    8GB Memory
    650+W Power Supply
    1TB Hard Drive

Also snagged an Asus 23" IPS gaming monitor and the CM Storm Devastator keyboard and mouse combo.

I am so damn excited to join the PC gaming community. Now comes the whole assembly process when everything shows up, but let's hope it's easier than I assume it will be.

I remember my first time fondly... hands were shaky, butterflies in my stomach, sweat profusely dripping from my brow. I remember prematurely squirting thermal paste on the cpu...

Such good times. So many builds since then.

At this point, would you guys recommend Windows 7 or 10? I'm not sure which one to get.

I'm enjoying 10 myself. No issues with it at all so far.

I remember my first custom PC. Dad didn't trust me handling the expensive electronics so someone on his job put it together for us, lol. It still sits around the house collecting dust.

My first actual build came in college. I was nervous because I spent what little money I had buying parts over the course of the summer and worried about one of them not working come the moment of truth (shout out to Beezy for part picking). Put everything together, hit power, and got nothing. After a moment of panic I plugged in the CPU power, smh.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

Stressed my PC last night while running CPU Z, HW Monitor Pro, GPU Z, and AfterBurner to carefully monitor every aspect. I couldn't duplicate my issues from several days ago.

                  - My 12v rail sat at 11.88 while idle and light load, under full load it would drop of to 11.75.

                  - GPU Clock when under full load would max out and never dip like it was couple days ago.

Its looking like I will just play my PC until the problem pops back up then start all the monitors. I'm still suspecting its the Powersupply, I think the years of use have diminished the power slightly. 11.75 while not extremely low, it is getting on the lower end with a power hunger card like this 290. Power supply is 750watts but I do have plenty of stuff drawing power. Here is an example of all my "gadgets" plugged it.

Video Card - AMD 290 - 300+ watts full load
Sound Card - Sound Blaster Z
Storage - 3 Internal Hard drives
Storage - 1 External Hard Drive
                  Keyboard - Corsair K70
                  Mouse - Anchor 8200 DPI
                  Mic - Blue Snowball
USB Hub - 4 Port Hub
USB - 360 Control Wireless Adapter
                  USB - Saitek Rudder Pedals
USB - Logitech C920 HD Pro Web Cam
                  USB - Logitech X52 Joystick

Double dipped on The Witcher 3 and damn does it look nice on PC. Also, the load times are so much faster with fast traveling being almost instantaneous on an SSD.

I was wondering if some of you guys with more pc experience could help me. It seems that the main thing holding my pc back is the graphics card...I think nvidia gt 610...I went out and bought a gt 730 from best buy but can you run it still says I have no chance of running xcom 2. I was wondering what card I would need to be able to run games of xcom's magnitude?

The better question is, what's your budget? You typically get more bang for your buck from AMD cards, but the support for them is terrible in my experience.

I went out and bought the 970 but it was to big for my case or at least I couldn't get it in there. Best buy employee suggested a geforce 750 ti? I don't think that would do the job though. And budget wise...well the $225 for the 970 was really to much..kind of glad it didn't work lol.

Before you buy a new one, tell us two things:

                                1) How much space do you have (length and width) available for a GPU?
                                2) How much do you feel comfortable spending?
